BURBRIDGE -- Emil. Yesterday, we mourned the loss of a man who gave legitimacy to our state's mantra, the Land of Enchantment. For 27 years Emil Burbridge founding President and CEO of Di-Cor Custom Homes, peppered our hills and valleys with homes for many of our high profile residents that gave new meaning to the term custom home. With his innovative architecture that brought the concrete Grecian pillars, Mediterranean red tile roofs, and Southwestern arches that now embellish most homes seen as high New Mexican style and his extreme hands-on craftsmanship that pursued nothing less than perfection, this New Mexican resident for over 60 years was no less than a state treasure. In his early years, his family traveled around New Mexico as his father looked for new construction jobs. As a small child he lived in Las Vegas, N.M. and Santa Fe, but his family finally put down roots in Albuquerque where Emil attended Wilson Junior School and Hiland High School. After graduation high school he served our state in the New Mexico National Guard and the Albuquerque Police Department. Before starting his own custom home company, he worked on the construction of several New Mexican landmarks including the Ruidoso Downs and the Sandia Tram. With his wife Sandra at his side, he began his home building career renovating FHA homes. As his homes became more prominent he had one goal in mind, to exceed his client's dreams. And according to those still living in Di-Cor homes, he always did. One home in particular, a Southern plantation nestled at the bottom of the Sandia mountains, got special recognition by industry newspapers and magazines. His homes now sit all across our land in Tinnin Farms, Tanoan, Glenwood Hills, Sandia Heights as small beacons to one New Mexican's artistry and passion. He retired in 2000 and lived in a home he built on Ute Lake in Logan NM, where he spent the last years of his life working on his second passion, fishing with his grandchildren. According to his wife, he often said he never quit building he just put out a sign that said gone fishing. Though Emil loved his profession, his real love was for his family, friends and Jesus Christ. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church for over 20 years and his closest surviving family members include his wife Sandra; his two daughters, Diana and Corena (for which his company DiCor was named after); and six grandchildren all rest with the assurance he is at peace with the Lord now, adding new style and flare to the mansions awaiting us all.

CHAMBLEE -- Sierra Rayn Chamblee, our precious two year old little girl, was called home to our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 with her loving family surrounding her. Sierra was a miracle of miracles. One oncologist said that Sierra taught him not to pass judgment too quickly because she had defied the odds time and time again. She loved to give kisses and "knuckles" to everybody, but for some reason, she did not like getting kisses from her brother, Caleb. She will be remembered for having an adorable "cheesy" smile, and, definitely a Daddy's Girl. Sierra was everybody's doll because she was so tiny. Yet, she had the biggest, bluest eyes that glowed! Sierra loved her Auntie Tiff's motorcycle. She had a playful, deviousness to her, but she was always very helpful, especially when it was time to pick up her toys and Caleb's toys. Sierra is survived by her devoted parents, Charles and Gen Chamblee of Albuquerque, NM; her brother, Caleb "Bubba" Chamblee; her grandparents, great-grandmother, aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles, and many cousins. She will be missed by so many! A Viewing and Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 3113 Carlisle Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM. COBOS -- Ruben - Internationally renowned scholar, linguist and folklorist Ruben Cobos, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years and 11 days at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, surrounded by his family on Monday, November 22, 2010. He will be mourned by his family, friends and the thousands of students that he taught in his lifetime. Born in Coahuila, Mexico on November 11, 1911, he had recently celebrated his 99th birthday with his family including his wife of 56 years, Elvira Cobos; his daughter Dr. Renee Cobos and her husband Dr. Robert Rosenberg; grandchildren, Jordan and Sabrina Rosenberg from California; his son Marcelino Cobos; his nieces, Olga Anson and Henrietta Roudabush; and nephew Ventura Ruybal. He came to the United States at the young age of age after his father had died. His mother, Dolores "Lola" Medina de Cobos relocated the family to San Antonio, Texas, and finally to Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother worked as a seamstress in a laundry and even though he was only a young lad of seven, she needed Ruben to help support the family. He provided food for his family by working before and after school with the milkman, the baker and the butcher. In exchange for sweeping the sidewalk in front of their stores, or helping deliver milk in the early hours of the morning before school, he would be given leftover bread, milk and meat for his family. He realized very early on that it would be only through education that he would be able to make a better life for himself and his family. He earned scholarships and worked as a cook in the cafeteria in order to attend Menaul High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When he graduated from Menaul, his mother had a job for him in the laundry where she was a seamstress, but Ruben had other plans. His dream was to go to college. When he told his mother of his dream, she answered "Con que dinero?" (with what money?). With no funds to his name, he approached Dr. Zimmerman, then the president of the University of New Mexico, and told him that he would do any type of work if he could only study at the University. Dr. Zimmerman was moved by his story and in exchange for full tuition, he cleaned the dorms, mowed grass, cleaned windows, and did whatever else was needed in order to earn his education. He graduated with honors from University of New Mexico with a Master's Degree in Spanish and taught in public schools in rural New Mexico. But that was only the beginning of what was to be a lifelong love of learning. He attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California and received his Doctor of Letters from that institution. He taught at the University of New Mexico for more than forty years (1936-1976), and held teaching positions at Stanford University, the University of Nevada, Colorado College, and Highlands University. At the time of his death, he was a Professor Emeritus at both the University of New Mexico and Stanford University. His mastery of English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and German enabled him to serve in WWII as a consultant and translator in the US Office of Censorship after graduating from the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland. Following his military involvement, he had a nascent career in Opera as a tenor and appeared in productions as a guest soloist with the Albuquerque Civic Opera, and the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra. As a teenager in Albuquerque, he was intrigued by and began documenting the regional variations of spoken Spanish. This was to become his work of a lifetime. Dr. Cobos began recording Indo-Hispanic folklore material in the early 1940s. With the co-operation of the common country folk: the villagers, farmers, sheepherders, the hard working people in the small towns throughout New Mexico and Southern Colorado and the assistance of his students, he gathered personal interviews, local ballads, games and songs, folktales, jokes, home remedies, recipes, proverbs, riddles and accounts of witchcraft from them. He also drew on items from literary works touching on New Mexico history, custom, and cultural history. His research spanned seventy-five years of direct contact with the Spanish spoken in the towns and villages of the upper Rio Grande and Southern Colorado. The Cobos Collection contains pieces of history which would have been lost forever, if not for his dedication. His numerous books and collections were the work of a lifetime of learning. He wrote, edited and co-edited hundreds of articles and several books. His articles have appeared in the New Mexico Historical Review, El Nuevo Mexicano, the New Mexico Folklore record, the Santa Fe New Mexican, and the Albuquerque Journal amongst many others. His most well known works, Refranes: Southwestern Spanish Proverbs (MNM Press) and A Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish, published by the Museum of New Mexico Press in Santa Fe have been continuously in use since their first publication in 1973 and 1983 respectively. They have become classic Spanish references, widely used in classrooms and by Spanish speakers in the Southwest and throughout the United States. The Ruben Cobos Collection of Spanish New Mexican Folklore is a sound archive containing over 2000 pieces, including ballads, poems, prayers, nursery rhymes, riddles, proverbs, stories, personal narratives, songs, instrumental music, and descriptions of social customs, ritual practices, and children's games. The recordings were made between 1944 and 1974 in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Music in the Ruben Cobos Collection of Spanish New Mexican Folklore, is archived in the Colorado College library and several other U.S. libraries including the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. His most recent areas of study and lecture materials regarded the hidden Jews who emigrated to New Mexico from Spain in the 16th century were a work in progress. He received multiple honors and awards in his lifetime including: The National Folk Festival Award, and election to the New Mexico Folklore Hall of Fame. He was one of 13 Hispanic Scholars that were honored by The Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the National Endowment of the Humanities at the US Capitol in 1979 amongst many others. Even at the age of 95, he could mesmerize a room of intellectuals with his wit, and knowledge as he did at a 2006 PEN dinner where he received an award for distinguished contribution to Languages and Literature of the Southwest. He lived a life of continuous learning and demonstrated to his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his countless students that by achieving an education , we can help change the world in ways that have no limits. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elvira Garcia Cobos RN, BSN, MPH of Albuquerque; his daughter Renee Cobos MD, her husband Robert Rosenberg MD, and grandchildren Jordan Alexander Rosenberg, Sabrina Juliana Rosenberg of Fullerton California; his son Ruben Marcelino Cobos of Albuquerque; Evelia Yusuf, Irving Cobos, and Helene Chenier all of Albuquerque; and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A memorial Rosary and Mass will be held Monday, December 20, 2010, 9:30 a.m., at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5310 Claremont NE. HIGHT -- George Colton Hight, 87, died November 26, 2010 following a brief illness. He was born June 4, 1923 in Gallup, New Mexico, the son of John George and Beatrice Allen (Colton) Hight. George loved this land of enchantment and he cherished his long and happy life spent in New Mexico. His family settled in the Gallup area back in the 1870's. They were a tough pioneer family that helped to construct many of the buildings in Gallup and they served in the city's administration. George was born with clubfeet that the Shriner Children's Hospital corrected in his youth. He was forever grateful and served as an active member of both the Shriners and the Masonic Order for over 50 years. His surgery left him with small feet that he compensated for with an adventurous spirit and a warm heart. George was an adventurous teenager: he learned to fly an airplane, dove for abalone in San Clemente, played the French Horn in band, and always kept his sketchbook handy. He started college at UNM in 1941 but after the attack on Pearl Harbor he was eager to join the military. Unfortunately his small feet kept him out; so, he decided to serve by working for Convair, a military aircraft contractor. After training in technical engineering he went to work at their plant in Fort Worth Texas. It was here that he met his wife and soul mate for 65 years, Lorene Bohn. She would always be known as "Bonnie", the nickname he gave her when they first dated. Their first son, George Colton Jr. was born in Fort Worth in 1947. As the war was winding down, George decided to return to his hometown of Gallup and become a professional photographer. Their daughter, Carolyn Sue, was born in 1950. The young family spent many weekends on outings in their Nash sedan photographing the diverse scenery and Native Americans of the Four Corners region. In 1952, George opened his own studio that he continued to operate for the next 39 years. His endearing personality brought out many smiles in his portrait studio. He expanded his work by doing police and commercial photography. He captured many interesting events through his lens: the crash of a top-secret U-2 plane on the Navajo reservation, whistle-stop railroad stations for Norman Rockwell's Breaking Family Ties, and George's famous Navajo Weaver image which has appeared in 50 countries and graced the pages of National Geographic and Arizona Highways. Their second son, John Fredrick was born in 1960. During this time, New Mexico was a popular setting for western films and the Hight home hosted many visiting actors including: Burt Lancaster, Lorne Greene, Lee Remick, and Donald Pleasance. George felt a strong civic duty and served the state in many capacities over the years. In 1966 he was the President of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Board and helped obtain funding for Gallup's Redrock State Park. In the 1970's he was a member of the New Mexico Economic Development and Director for his region. In 1981, he was elected to the Gallup city council and served two terms as Mayor Pro Tem. His first accomplishment was to bring the first 911 system to the police department. In 1991, George closed his studio and moved to Albuquerque. He transitioned his photographic talent onto the canvas to become an accomplished southwestern artist. He has won many awards including a Lifetime Achievement from MasterWorks. Some of his work may be seen at the Yucca Gallery in Old Town Albuquerque. George was a deeply devout man. He served as Artistic Director for the Gallery at the Cathedral Church of St. John. He spent countless hours serving the church and supporting his fellow parishioners. George was a lovable, talented, and charismatic man. He is survived by his wife - Bonnie; his daughter Carolyn; his sons, George and John; his children in-law Dave, Linda, and Julie; his grandchildren Stephanie, Matthew, Cody, and William; and sisters, Peggy Hight Robb and Evelyn Alberta Stokes. Memorial Services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the Cathedral of St. John, 318 Silver Ave SW in Albuquerque with Dean Mark Goodman officiating. Private Ennichement will take place at the Cathedral. Memorial Contributions maybe made to the Cathedral of St. John or to the Shriner Children's Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr.; Tampa, FL 33607 or to www.shrinershq.org. WHITTLESEY -- Janet Lee Whittlesey, a beloved mother and brave woman, joined her family in Heaven Saturday morning, November 13, 2010, at the age of 78. Janet chose the path less traveled in her courageous battle with end-stage cancer - to receive no treatment but instead to live life to the fullest under the care of hospice. Janet was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1932. Her father, a nationally-known and respected church Choir Director, Dr. Federal Lee Whittlesey, and her mother, a gracious and talented artist, Jessie Victoria Whittlesey, moved to Dallas, Texas in the early 1950's so Dr. Whittlesey could take the leadership role of the Music Ministry of Highland Park United Methodist Church. After her marriage to Dr. Johnnie Jeff Jerome, a Family Practice physician, and a three-year military commitment that relocated the family to Japan, Janet received her Bachelor of Sacred Music degree from Southern Methodist University. She then chose to follow her father's profession, and she became Choir Director of a number of church choirs in the greater Dallas, Texas area. In 1996, Janet moved to New Mexico and soon became the Choir Director for Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Recently, she played the piano for church services and provided mentorship to the music leadership of High Desert United Methodist Church of Rio Rancho, and she taught piano lessons to children in the local community through her business "Middle-C Music." Janet is survived by her two sisters, Elizabeth First, of Emporia, Kansas and Jeanne Leverette of Conroe, Texas; Janet's daughter, Dr. Wanda Whittlesey-Jerome, lives in Corrales, New Mexico with her husband, Kenric Speed; Janet's two sons, Mark and Paul Jerome; and her three grand-children, live in Texas. Paul lives in Irving, and Mark and his wife Gina and their daughter Katie live in Lewisville; Janet's two grandsons, Clint and David by Mark's first wife Vicki Terry, live in Texas. A Memorial Service honoring the life and contributions of Janet Whittlesey will be held in Albuquerque at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd., SE, on Thanksgiving Sunday.
