PINKERTON -- Donald C. Pinkerton, 80, retired pediatrician, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Clara Joan Pazdral Pinkerton; his three children, Carol (Nick), Eric (Diane) and Beth; his five step-children David (Kathy), Tod, Mark, Jim and Becky (Pat); and numerous step-grandchildren, extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Wolfe Pinkerton and his parents. He was born on February 27, 1930, in Fatehgarh, India, to Marshall and Nina Allen Pinkerton, who were missionaries in the Presbyterian Church. Childhood illness led his parents to leave the mission field and settle in Houston, Texas. His early years in India and the caring doctors who treated him in Houston shaped his decision as an adult to become a physician and a missionary. He served as a physician in Ganado, Arizona, for nine years. In 1968, he moved his family to Albuquerque, NM, to complete a fellowship in pediatrics. He worked at Lovelace Clinic in the pediatrics department for over 20 years and for many years focused on treating children with cancer. After leaving Lovelace he worked at UNMH in the children's cancer clinic. Don was an avid hiker, bicyclist, nature photographer, environmentalist and adventurer. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Children's Cancer Fund of NM, 112 14th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102; Covenant Presbyterian Church, 9315 Candelaria Rd NE, Albuq., NM 87112; Environmental Defense Fund, 257 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010; or a charity of their choice. A memorial service will be held on January 15, 2011, at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
