CHOPEK -- ANNA CHOPEK September 18, 1912 - January 17, 2010 Born in Kozova, in Ukraine, Anna and her mother crossed the ocean when she was a year old to join her father who had come earlier to Boston, Mass. She graduated High School as the Depression deepened. Desirous of more education, she decided that she would go to Law School at night and pay her tuition by working as a secretary during the day. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Portia Law School for Women. When she took the Boston area Bar Exam, she received the highest score, though the other competitors were graduates of a variety of prestigious Law Schools like Harvard. This great honor did not open the doors to any law firms. Frustrated by the negative attitude towards women and the large disparity in salaries, she applied for and was hired by the U.S. Civil Service, and the General Accounting Office in New York and Washington. After the war she returned to Boston where she established her own practice. In 1945, she was appointed a member of the Displaced Persons Commission. In 1961 she was appointed an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This was followed by an appointment as an Assistant District Attorney for the city of Boston. Upon retiring, she was honored by a group of eminent lawyers, all men. She found this to be a delicious irony. She retired to Los Alamos with her mother so that they could be with her sister, Stephanie Sydoriak, who worried how Anna would take to the small mountain town of Los Alamos after her career in Boston. There was no need to worry. In 1990, Anna ran for County Probate Judge and served two, four-year terms. Anna often spoke about how wonderful her retirement years in this small town were. She found many friends and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Throughout her life, she was active in Ukrainian affairs in the East, continuing even after retiring to the distant West. She enjoyed teaching the art of Ukrainian Easter Eggs at the Senior Center until a few years ago. In 2004, the New England School of Law in Boston, awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree for her contributions to the struggle of professional women to be recognized for their achievements in the field of law. She leaves her sister, Stephanie Sydoriak, of Los Alamos, and Stephanie's children, Stephen (Jane) and Katherine (George Lawrence) of Los Alamos, Eugene (Ginny) of Medford, Oregon, Christine of Boulder, Colorado, and Walter (Charisse) of Sequoia National Park, California; Also grandnephews: David (Diane) Lawrence of Boulder, CO, Stephen (Tiffany) Lawrence of Salt Lake City, and Cassiope Sydoriak of Boulder, CO. A family graveside ceremony took place on January 20, 2010. A celebration of her life will take place at a Memorial Mass on January 29, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos, NM. In place of flowers, contributions in Anna's name can be made to: Ukrainian National Association, Scholarship Fund, The Ukrainian Weekly, 2200 Route 10, Parsippany, NJ 07054.

HOWARD -- Billie Knudson Howard, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. She was a long time resident of New Mexico, with over 70 years in Albuquerque and the last 14 years in Rio Rancho. No matter where she traveled in the world, New Mexico was always her home. Born "Clara Christine Knudson" on March 28, 1916, in the small town of Gladstone, NM, she was the daughter of George Henry and Hallie Mallow Knudson. As a small child, when learning to talk, her first words she learned was "Bill", the name of a small riding pony owned by her older brothers, John Knudson and Earl Knudson. She was so intrigued by the pony and repeated his name so much that the family called her "Billie" and never by her birth name. Later on in years, everything she owned was known as "Billie" and everyone called her "Billie" until her final resting place in heaven. Billie was never afraid of relationships and survived four deceased husbands before finally finding her life mate, Thomas Jefferson Howard. Of all her marriages, the one to Thomas lasted over thirty years and they were known to family and friends as world travelers. Their most famous statement was, "Tom and Billie on the road to everywhere", yet always coming back to Albuquerque, NM as home. She is preceded in death by her parents, George Henry and Hallie Mallow Knudson; three brothers, John, Earl and George Wayne; one sister, Frieda. Her only surviving sister, Martha Rinehart resides in Arlington, TX. She was also preceded in death by her only daughter, Bernadine Davis. She is survived by her remaining three sons and wives, William and Lana Lawson of Santa Rosa, CA, Donald and Bonnie Galloway of Grass Valley, CA, and Wayne and Penny Holly of Rio Rancho, NM; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Billie was a member of "Faith on the Hill" church in Rio Rancho along with her husband Tom and long after his passing, she lived with her youngest son, Wayne until needing full time nursing assistance. Every Sunday she was in church and would visit with her son and family. In her later years, her most famous statement to the family and friends was, "Okey Dokey". Billie's smile, wiggle, laughter and her famous statement will forever be missed. Cremation has taken place at Vista Verde Memorial Park and Billie will be laid to rest along with her beloved husband, Thomas at a special Memorial Service for veterans. The service will take place on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 1:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. This will be a short, but honorable service for Thomas and Billie Howard. From her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, God Bless You Clara Christine "Billie Knudson" Howard. Love you always, Your son - Wayne D. Holly. LUCERO -- MARILYN January 2, 1944 - December 25, 2009 To My Family Remember Me When I come to the end of my journey and I travel my last wearly mile, just forget if you can that I ever frowned and only remember my smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken; remember the good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache and remember I've had loads of fun. Forget that I've stumbled and blundered and sometime fell by the way. Remember I have fought some hard battles and won, are the close of the day. Then forget to grieve for my going. I would not have you sad for a day. But in summer just gather some flowers and remember the place where I lay. And come in the shade of evening when the sun paints the sky in the West. Stand for a few moments beside me and remember only my best. Love You, Marilyn

She graduated from Bishop Kendrick High School in Norristown, and later attended Gwynned Mercy College. In 1980, she moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she enjoyed friends and family for nearly 30 years. She gained her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Albuquerque, and her MBA from the College of Santa Fe. Patricia's pride in her work and relationships with her colleagues made her career enormously fulfilling. Her career in Albuquerque started at GE Aircraft Engines. She later moved to Sandia National Laboratories, where she performed many roles for more than 20 years, including staff auditor and, most recently, fleet analyst. Her greatest joy was actively participating in the lives of her sons and grandchildren. Patricia made several trips per year to her sons' homes in suburban Philadelphia, and enjoyed annual vacations in Ocean City, NJ. Donahue; sister-in-law, Ann Donahue, seven nieces and nephews, and two grandchildren, Julia and Luke, whom she adored. PRENTICE -- Dr. John K. Prentice, born October 4, 1954 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a physicist who possessed an infinitely supple and curious mind. John's scientific career began in his mid-teens tracking satellites for the Smithsonian across the northern New Mexico skies. Over the next 40 years he went on to explore a broad spectrum of scientific questions, pursuing projects in fields as diverse as computational physics, solid dynamics, quantum mechanics, medicine, biological physics and geophysics. Computers and computing were a unifying theme in his career. He often reminisced about carting 100-pound boxes of computer cards on the back of his bike between Sandia High School and the UNM computing center on a route that was uphill both ways and buried most times of year in ten feet of snow. His claims that in those days all computing was done by flickering candlelight were disregarded by most. Another highlight of his teenage years was his participation in the 1972 International Science Fair where he won a variety of awards for his project on calculating satellite orbitals. He continued as an avid science fair supporter throughout his adult life, achieving notoriety among friends and colleagues for his persistent and insistent springtime e-campaigns to recruit judges. John studied mathematics and physics at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he completed his PhD in quantum scattering theory in Physics in 1992 under the guidance of Dr. Colston Chandler. His professional career began early when he was hired at the Phillips Laboratory (then AFWL) on Kirtland Air Force Base in the mid-1970's to develop computer codes to model solid hydrodynamics phenomenology. He went on from there to work as a computational physicist for a number of scientific R&D companies in Albuquerque through the 1980's. In 1981 he married Mary Z. Fuka, also a physicist, sealing a love affair of heart, mind and spirit in a partnership that gave shape to their best work and happiest adventures. Together, they founded Quetzal Computational Associates in 1992 to provide scientific consulting services to the national labs, military and private industry. They moved the company to Durango, Colorado, in 1996, where it was reorganized in 2000 as Quetzal Biomedical, Inc., an investor-funded medical technology startup. They relocated with it to Boulder, Colorado in 2003. John led Quetzal as CEO to develop new pacing therapies and devices for treating congestive heart failure. He regarded this work as the most satisfying of his career. John's interests turned to the geosciences in 2005 when he was recruited to direct the Boulder-based scientific R&D efforts of Terralliance, an innovative technology-driven exploration startup. He also very much enjoyed teaching as a lecturer during that time in the University of Colorado's Department of Applied Mathematics. Most recently, John started TriplePoint Physics LLC, a consulting venture focused on developing new technologies for geothermal energy exploration and development. Beyond his love of science, John's life was fuelled by a passion for the outdoors. He was a long-time member of the American Alpine Club. He was a rock-climber, ice-climber, tele-skier from the days of true double-cambered skinny skis, and mountaineer who ascended peaks in Colorado, Mexico, The Pacific Northwest and South America. In recent years he most enjoyed hiking and camping trips in the Colorado Rockies and Utah's desert canyon country, especially if there was a little trout stream nearby to provide a pan of fish for breakfast (and perhaps for dinner, too). John Prentice's life was cut short on January 5th, 2010, in Boulder, Colorado, when he died from head injuries sustained in an accident several days earlier. His wife was with him at the end, as was her brother, Daniel Fuka, who John loved as his own brother. John is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Mary Z. Fuka; by Agbeli Ameko, who was like a son to him; by his parents, Glenn and Evelyn Prentice; by his brothers, Glenn and Steve Prentice; by his brothers-in-laws Louis, Joseph and Daniel Fuka & their wives, Lisa, Jean and Melissa; by his niece, Cassandra Prentice, her husband Mike Shore; and daughters, Alexandra and Olivia; by nephews, Daniel Prentice, Christopher Prentice and their wives Sara and Ambrosia; by nephews, Cornell and Luke Fuka; by many friends and colleagues; and by his two feline companions, Chisum and Luna. We terribly miss his fearless optimism, the constant stream of ideas and conversation that flowed in his company and e-mail correspondence, his wit and enthusiasm for finding out what might lie around the next corner, his mentorship and support in all our dearest projects and ambitions. An online memorial open to all visitors is being established at www.johnkprentice.org. John's wife and family would especially like to thank Dr. Lee Nelson of Boulder Neurological Associates and the staff of the Boulder Community Hospital ICU for their wonderfully compassionate care of John in his final hospitalization. In lieu of a memorial service, John's family and friends plan to celebrate his life in an informal gathering in the place and season he loved most, the Rocky Mountains at the height of summer. For those who would like to honor him with a donation in his name, organizations dear to his heart included: The Central NM Science & Engineering Research via the STEM Education Outreach Programs at UNM (https://unm.securesites.net/give-online/fdn/); The Southern Utah Wilderness Association (http://www.suwa.org); and The Colorado Science & Engineering Fair (http://www.csef.colostate.edu/).
