Alfonso G. Romero, age 89, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, January 18, 2010. He was born on April 28, 1920, in Chacon, Mora County, NM, to Federico Romero and Matilde Gallegos. Alfonso lived a long, happy, and healthy life, and he was much loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of almost 41 years, Charlotte Martinez Romero, Bosque Farms, NM; step-daughters, Esther Pringle, Albuquerque, NM, Helen Courtney and husband, John, Driggs, Idaho, and Cathy Montoya and husband, Rudy, Albuquerque, NM; grandsons, Rudy and Carlos Montoya and Ken Courtney; granddaughter, Heather Courtney Kopf and husband, Mike; sisters, Eulalia Pando and husband, Jake, West Jordan, UT; one brother, Jose Filadelfio Romero, Salt Lake City, UT; many nephews, nieces and cousins. Alfonso graduated from Menaul High School in Albuquerque, NM, in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Alfonso received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and The Victory Medal. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Jose Amado Romero; and sisters, Adela Valdez, Celina Lovato, and Maggie Lujan. A funeral service and celebration of his life will be held Monday, January 25, 2010, 11:00 a.m., at French - University Chapel, with visitation starting one hour prior. Burial will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM, 1:30 p.m., with U.S. Army Military Honors. Reverend Hiram H. Martinez, who was his long-time friend and co-worker at DOE as well as his brother-in-law, will be officiating.
