Apodaca -- Pedro I. "Pete" Apodaca, age 66, passed away February 19, 2002 at the Guadalupe County Hospital in Santa Rosa following an illness. Pete was born November 3, 1935 to the home of Pedro and Gavina Gallegos Apodaca. He married Frances Garcia March 17, 1957 in Vaughn. Pete worked for The New Mexico State Highway Dept. in Vaughn for over 25 years. He was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn and the Vaughn Senior Citizens. He loved to watch westerns on T.V. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frances, his brothers, Tano Apodaca, Desiderio Apodaca and Tony Apodaca and his sister, Bennie Sisneros. Survivors include his children, Jimmy Apodaca and wife, Marcella of Clovis, NM, Anna Apodaca of Pojaque, Robert T. Apodaca and wife, Teri of Vaughn and Florinda Garcia and husband, Arthur of Vaughn; his grandchildren, Suzanne Apodaca, Jimmy Apodaca, Jr., Cerease Aragon, Corey Aragon, Victoria Gallegos, Arianna Garcia, Andrew Apodaca and Adrian Apodaca. Also surviving is his sister, Oralda Dimas of Lordsburg, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. from St. Mary's Church in Vaughn. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. also from St. Mary's Church with Father John Jasinski officiating. Creamation will follow the services. Serving as Pallbearers will be Norbert Archibeque, Marcy Cordova, Jimmy Pacheco, Billy Anaya, Herbert Anaya, Arthur"Chief" Marquez and Marty O'Shea. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Corey Aragon, Jimmy Apodaca, Jr., Artie Garcia, Edward Baca, Adrian Apodaca and Andrew Apodaca. Asselmeier -- Allen E. Asselmeier, 72, died February 17, 2002 after a brief illness. Born in Missouri, and an Albuquerque resident since 1960, he retired from Sandia National Labs after 31 years. Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle in 1998, and is survived by his sisters, Mary Schneider of Illinois, Doris England of Michigan and brother, Francis Asselmeier of Illinois; daughters, Candy Shannon of TX, Gayle Asselmeier and Kathy Dailey of NM; grandchildren, Paula Esquibel, Cynthia Emery, Michael Esquibel, Jaclyn Shannon of TX, and Ross and Brenna Bishop of NM; great-grandchildren, Christopher Emery and Zachary Esquibel of TX. The family would like to say thank you to the 800/ICU units at Presbyterian Kaseman, Presbyterian ICU downtown, and Carestone at Quintessence. Atkins -- Jane Atkins, 59, a 42-year resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. She is survived by her son, J. Burgess -- Isaac Burgess, 73, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on February 18, 2002. He was born on June 25, 1928 in Stillwell, OK to Joe and Margaret Blackwood Burgess. Isaac had served his country in the United States Air Force. Prior to retirement, he was an investor in the real estate business and also managed many properties during his career. He loved golfing and was very proud to have been a scratch golfer for many years. Isaac was a member of the East Lincoln Lodge #210 AF & AM of Lincoln, Nebraska. He will be dearly missed by all. Isaac is survived by his beloved wife, Faye of the family home; son, Kim Burgess and wife, Joan of Missouri; brother, Alfred Johnson of Nashua, NH; and one grandson. Fincke -- Norman Edwin Fincke, 78, died Sunday, February 17, 2002. He is survived by his children, Wayne D. Fincke, Kenneth H. Fincke and Carolynn A. Fincke. Norman was born December 21, 1923 to Herbert Ernest Fincke and Cora May Carson Fincke in La Junta, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert C. Fincke in 1942 and John A. Fincke in 1979; his father, Herbert E. Fincke in 1963; and mother, Cora M. Carson Fincke in 1972. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1938. Norman graduated from Albuquerque High School in May 1942 and enlisted in the Air Force October 1942. After his military service he started work in the grocery business with other family members and then went to work as a wholesale food broker for Libby and Gouley Burcham and retired in 1988. Norm and his family were charter members of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and his dogs. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Harold Nilsson officiating. Garcia -- Mary J. Garcia, 87, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. She is survived by her sons, Anthony P. Garcia of Albuquerque, Donald L. Garcia and wife, Loretta of Santa Fe and Ronald L. Garcia of Colorado Springs; granddaughters, Stacy Garcia of Albuquerque and Yvette Garcia of Santa Fe; grandsons, Michael Hernandez, Anthony D. Garrett -- Cokie Garrett, 74, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1982, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2002. He came to New Mexico from California. Cokie was born November 20, 1927 in Edgefield, South Carolina the son of Cliff and Mattie Bronson Garrett. Cokie was a truck driver with ABF Trucking before retiring. At a young age he married his sweetheart, Earlastine Tait. He served in the US Army for six and a half years during WW II and the Korean conflict. The greatest moment he experienced in his life was when he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1998. He was a true lover of people, animals, fishing, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling with his cousin, William Garrett. Cokie as a giving man who truly gave from his heart. He was preceded in death by one sister, Corine, and a brother, Lewis, his son, Cokie Garrett, Jr. who died in 1989 and his "pals" Guy and Homer. Cokie is survived by his wife, Earlastine of the family home; daughter, Michelle McMihelk and husband, Darryl of California, Valerie Mazes and husband, Rodney of California; seven grandchildren, Daron, Chekona, Megin, Dan, Danae, Brandon, and Kim; great-grandchildren, Daizanae, and Chamira, one grand son-in-law, Fred Cooper; one brother, Rufus Devore of New York, and a host of relatives and friends. Gonzales -- John C. Gonzales, 77, a retired Santa Fe Railroad employee and a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, born on August 8, 1924, passed away on February 15, 2002. John is survived by his brother, Placido Gonzales of Albuquerque; four sisters, Virginia Placencia of Albuquerque, Carmen Chavez of Albuquerque, Mary Helen Sackett of Pahrump, Nevada and Eva Diaz of Albuquerque. Holt -- David Benjamin Holt died Monday, February 18, 2002 of a malignant brain tumor. He was born near Nashville, AR on April 24, 1936, only son of Josephine Bryant Holt and Percy Campbell Holt. He graduated from Nashville High School and joined the Navy, going to San Diego for Boot Camp, Norman, OK for Aviation School and Millington, TN for Electronic School. He was then assigned to North Island Naval Station in San Diego and dispatched to Iukuna, Japan with Patrol Squadron 48 as a Radar Operator. After discharge from the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas, graduating with a Bachelor of Science with honors in Electrical Engineering in 1962. He then came to Albuquerque and joined Sandia National Labs, attended UNM part time and received a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1964. His entire career at Sandia involved work with satellite systems. He retired after 38 years at Sandia in June 2000. David was a lifelong Methodist and an active member of Central United Methodist Church and Partnership Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three children, Barry Holt and his wife, Tracy, Paul Holt and his, wife Andrea, and Lynn Holt Russo and her husband, Tony; two grandchildren, Rachel and Rebekah Holt; four sisters, Margaret Massey of Little Rock, AR, Amanda Fishback of North Little Rock, AR, Charlie Jean Brakebill of Little Rock, AR and Carolyn Davis of Snyder, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mary Jo Thornton. Services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper NE, with Dr. Charles Crutchfield and Rev. Marty Singleterry officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Pallbearers will be Barry Holt, Paul Holt, Tony Russo, Rik Holman, Bill Lackey, Tom Hoover, Paul Elder and Rex Allender. David was a gentle man, kind, generous and soft spoken. He was respected by his peers, and dearly loved by his family and friends. He will be sorely missed. Kemp -- John D. Kemp, 53, passed away February 20, 2002. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and later worked for the US Postal Service. He was a resident of Placitas. He will be remembered as a true friend and gentle soul. Kirby -- Lois Marie Kirby, "Grandma", 79, loving mother, grandma and friend and resident of Albuquerque since 1951, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. Kravetz -- Harry Kravetz, 93, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2002 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, December 9, 1908 to Phillip and Lena Kravetz, he spent most of his life in Tulsa, OK. Since 1988, he resided at The Montebello Retirement Community in Albuquerque. Harry owned Karvetz and Son Grocery in Tulsa for many years and retired from Affiliated Foods. In his retirement he enjoyed golf, poker, and spending time with family. He was a long-standing member of Congregation B'nai Emunah in Tulsa, and a member of Congregation B'nai Israel in Albuquerque. He was affiliated with B'nai Brith for many years. The family thanks Montebello for their loving care the past 13 years. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 40 years, Naomi, and his sister, Mamie. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Druxman and husband, Louis, of Albuquerque; his son, Leon Kravetz and wife, Susie, of St. Louis and an older sister, Esther Miller of Los Angeles. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Joel Druxman, Tucson, AZ, Eric Druxman, Norman, OK, Andrew Kravetz, Peoria, IL, and Lauri Kravetz, Washington, D.C. Lucero -- Theodora (Dora) A. Lucero, born June 20, 1918 in Clayton, New Mexico. A resident of Albuquerque for 67 years, died on February 19, 2002. She is survived by her loving family, Joe A. Lucero her husband, of the family home; two daughters, Kathy B. Lucero of Albuquerque and Rosalinda Karolek and husband, Charles of Wheaton, Illinois; her grandchildren, Javier Lucero of Albuquerque, Carla Byrne of Palo Alto, CA., Eric Karolek of Bollingbrook, Il and Marisa Karolek of Aurora, IL; her great-grandchildren, Alexa, Colin, Christina and Brett; her sisters, Peggy Scarton and husband, Oliver of Albuquerque, Odelia ¯Odie¯ Luna of Albuquerque, Vivian Perez of Bernalillo and Mae Garcia of Albuquerque; a brother, Florence Padilla and wife, Gertrude of Albuquerque. Theodora is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Alfred Armijo and Joe (Uncle Lou) Armijo. Besides being a wonderful homemaker and mother, Theodora was known for the hospitality that she shared with many over the years. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Mission Church where she served as a Catechist and was an integral part of the church community for many years. Theodora was also a member of the American G.I. Forum Women's Auxiliary and former member of the Women¯s Elks Auxiliary (DOES) #2500, Rio Rancho, NM. Rosary will be recited on Friday, February 22, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary ¯ Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. Luna -- Perla M. Luna, age 64, beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend was welcomed into the arms of the Lord, our Savior, Tuesday, February 19, 2002, while surrounded by her loving family. She was a life long resident of Albuquerque; and a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederico and Estella Lopez; and a son-in-law, Gene Armijo. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Henry Luna; her children, Lillian Armijo, Rose Archibeque and husband, Alfred, Patricia Abeyta and husband, Chris; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Also surviving are four sisters, Corine Martinez and husband, Joe, Ramona McAfee and husband, James, Wanda Lopez, Imelda Ortiz and husband, Richard; three brothers, Fred Lopez Jr., Sammy Lopez, and Leroy Lopez; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Mock -- James Leo Mock, 73, was born October 30, 1928 in Pawhuska, OK by parents, Leo Mock, and Ruth Ellitt. Our Grandpa was a great fisherman who always tried to catch the big one. He was a decorated soldier who fought in WWII and received the WWII Victory Metal. He also retired from the Denver Mint in 1990 after 25 years of service. New -- Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee), President Emeritus of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), passed away on Friday, February 8, 2002. Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2002 on IAIA's campus. The campus is located at 83 Avan Nu Po Road in Santa Fe. In partnership with the late Dr. George Boyce, New composed what became the mission statement for IAIA, established in 1962. He served as IAIA's President from 1967-78 at which time he retired, but remained actively involved with the IAIA Community. In 1990, he was honored as a Living Treasure of Santa Fe, and was a recipient of New Mexico's Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Santa Fe Mayor's Recognition Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the Southwestern Association of Indian Artists' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. With a career that spanned more than 50 years, Lloyd Kiva New celebrated a wealth of achievements and received numerous significant awards. To the IAIA Community (students, faculty, staff and alumni), he was an educator and mentor, a friend, and a role model. He was an unparalleled force of creativity and visionary insight. His work was at once inspired and inspiring, and his creative energy and artistic genius radiated out to all who stood in his presence. He was gentle and kind, soft-spoken and wise, and through his voice of leadership and compassion, encouraged students to find their own creative voices and sing their own songs. He dreamed, and showed that dreaming is the root of creativity. For this, we are thankful. For this, we are ever grateful. Lloyd Kiva New leaves behind his wife, Aysen New; two children from a previous marriage, Nancy Sandroff of St. Louis; son, Jeff New from Cortez, Colorado and five grandchildren. Olivas -- Gregorita Rendon (Goya) Olivas, 85, long time Santa Fe Resident, died Saturday, February 16, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ubaldo J. Olivas, her son, Michael, and grandson, Paul. Mrs. Olivas was born March 3, 1916 in Embudo, NM. She married and lived in Santa Fe where she raised her children and spent her life as a homemaker. Gregorita was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was very devoted to her catholic faith, and was a member of La Union Protectiva Feminina for many years. She is survived by her children, Lupita (Pita) Sandoval, Martin Olivas and wife, Elizabeth, Carmela Estrada and husband, Ron, and Virginia Padilla and husband, Leonard. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Her family has requested memorial contributions be offered in her name to Lovelace Hospice, Siesta Hills, 5403 Gibson Blvd, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Estrada, Peter Estrada and Orlando Padilla. Padilla -- Alfredo A. Padilla ¯Big Al¯, 76, a resident of Bernalillo, NM for over forty years, the foundation and strength of our family, was called to be with our heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 19, 2002. Alfredo was born in Springer, NM to Alfredo and Adelina Padilla on July 15, 1925. He was the oldest of eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents; his youngest sister, Gloria Padilla; his youngest son, Ernie Padilla; and most recently his favorite brother, Ofelio Padilla, who passed away on February 6, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elsie Chavez Padilla; three sons, Johnny and wife, Sylvia, Fred and wife, Nadine and Michael Padilla; his grandchildren, Jeff and fiancé, Isabel Flores, Chris, Steve and Diana Padilla; his great-grandchildren, Joshua, Marcus, Destiny, Chris and Shantell Padilla. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Regina Padilla; sisters, Martha Andazola and husband, Simon, Margaret Ponce, Phyllis Duran and husband, Juan; brothers, Joseph Padilla and wife, Maureen and Robert Padilla and wife, Dora. Alfredo served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was employed by Plains Electric Generation & Transmission Co-Operative, Inc. for 43 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, NM. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 69, the Bernalillo Volunteer Fire Department, Defined Fitness in Rio Rancho, Knights of Columbus, Meadowlark Senior Center and Fishing Club, Rio Rancho/Sandoval County Senior Olympics, Sandoval County Senior Center and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Al enjoyed playing pool and had a passion for fishing, especially on his boat with his brother, Ofelio. Al will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who had the chance to be a part of this great and wonderful man's life. Pederson -- Melvin Lee (Pete) Pederson passed away February 19, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. He was born April 28, 1943 at Steele, N.D. to Albert and Hazel Pederson. Pete attended schools at Steele and Jamestown, N.D. and San Diego State University. He spent more than 40 years in the tire industry in California, Neveda and New Mexico. During the Watts riot in the 1960's he guarded his store for a week with only candy bars to eat. It was one of only a few buildings that didn't burn. He is survived by his loving wife, Diana of Albuquerque; daughters, Margo and Lynette, Mesa, AZ; and son, Randy, Orange, CA and five grandsons. He is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, Jerry, Chandler, AZ, Gary, Lawton, OK, Sandra, Jamestown, ND, Harlow, Rentobn, WA, Carlotta, Gold Canyon, AZ, Allen, Casselton, ND, and Kelvin, Fargo, ND and several nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death. Services will be Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. from LDS, Kachina Bldg. Foyer, 6009 Kachina NW. The body has been cremated. Perea -- Mr. Jose C. Perea, 65, a resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family on February 19, 2002. Mr. Perea is the beloved husband of 44 years to Mrs. Lorey Perea. Rawitzer -- William J. Rawitzer, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1992, died Monday, February 18, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Katherine Rawitzer of Albuquerque; daughter, Kate Dwyer of Albuquerque; sons, Bill Rawitzer of Albuquerque and Tom Rawitzer of Minnetonka, MN; seven grandchildren, Mark Kelly, Leslie Kelly, Tom Kelly, Chris Rawitzer, Carrie Rawitzer, Mike Rawitzer and T.J. Rawitzer; great-grandchildren, Bridget Kelly, Megan Kelly, Grace Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Sam Gyongyosi and Madeline Gyongyosi; and brother, Keith Rawitzer of Naples, FL. Mr. Rawitzer was the first mayor of Rancho Mirage, CA. He was a 32 Degree Mason, belonging to the Scottish Rite and had a membership in the Zuhrah Shrine Temple in Minneapolis, MN. Mr. Rawitzer was also a member of the Heights Optimist Club. Ricker -- Marla Jean Ricker, 45, died February 17, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Dolores "Dee" Kobernat. Marla is survived by her husband, Scot; daughter, Stacy; two sons, Ryan and Evan; one brother, Randall Kobernat; two sisters, Linda Ward and husband, Jerry and Connie Cooper. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, a special niece, Donna Filip, who was like a sister to Marla; an uncle, Don Deatherage and wife, Helen; an aunt, Mildred Kobernat, and many cousins. Marla was loved by all who knew her. She had many friends. God blessed her with a wonderful gift of loving children and in return they loved her dearly.

Steinkraus -- Edwin (Ed) Steinkraus, age 81, was born January 30, 1921 in Clovis, NM and passed away February 16, 2002 at his home in Albuquerque. He graduated from high school in Greely, CO in 1939. Ed married Eileen Sivers in 1940. Eileen preceded him in death in 1982. Ed then married Margery Myers in 1983. A resident of Albuquerque since 1954, Ed established and operated Hoffmantown Body Shop on Menaul until its sale in 1970. After the sale of the body shop, Ed sold real estate for Cactus Realty for several years. In the early 1970's Ed and Gene Sanchez formed a partnership to construct and lease Post Offices in various New Mexico cities. Ed is survived by his daughter, Nancy Ness and her husband, Erwin Ness; grandson, Craig Buchanan and his wife, Christina; granddaughter Teri Mauldin and her husband, Jeff, five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Ed is also survived by seven stepchildren and many step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary located at 1100 Coal Ave SE. A viewing will be held at Strong-Thorne Mortuary on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 fro 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Ranches of New Mexico. Wade -- George E. Wade, Jr., 80, a resident of Albuquerque and native New Mexican, died February 17, 2002. He was born on August 2, 1921 to New Mexico homesteaders and ranchers, Mable Alice Lawing Wade and George Elmer Wade in Hagerman, NM. His early life in ranching and farming paved the way for his love of hunting and the outdoors. He was graduated from New Mexico Military Institute and fought in WWII, receiving commendation metals and the Purple Heart. He continued farming and ranching throughout his life and also owned and operated Wade Equipment, Inc., an International Harvester dealership in Carlsbad, NM for 15 years. After the sale of his business, he worked at various sales positions where he could interact with the ranching and farming community. He had a life-long love of flying and worked as the general manager of International Air Motive and later as an executive corporate pilot in El Paso, TX. His retirement years were filled with skeet shooting, hunting, dancing, playing the stock market, mastering the computer and most importantly, enjoying his family and many grandchildren. He was a consummate supporter of his grandchildren's academic lives and sports endeavors. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn Heinrich Wade; daughter, Susanna Busico of Austin, TX; daughter, Brenda Moore and husband, Robert of Albuquerque; daughter, Karen Childress and husband, David Dealy of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Dr. Kristina Busico Metzger and husband, Brian of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Busico Fleming and husband, Steve of Santa Barbara, CA, Robin M. Moore, Mary Margaret Moore, and Russell W. Moore of Albuquerque, Katherine Childress and Kirk Childress; great-granddaughter, Skyelar Monet Stroud of Dallas, TX. Other survivors include sisters, Ruth O¯Neal of Albuquerque and Grace Coleman of Roswell, NM; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Calvin Graham of El Paso, TX. A private memorial service will be held Friday, February 22nd, at the home of his daughter in Albuquerque. Interment of cremains will take place at a later date at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
