Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee), President Emeritus of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), passed away on Friday, February 8, 2002. Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2002 on IAIA's campus. The campus is located at 83 Avan Nu Po Road in Santa Fe. In partnership with the late Dr. George Boyce, New composed what became the mission statement for IAIA, established in 1962. He served as IAIA's President from 1967-78 at which time he retired, but remained actively involved with the IAIA Community. In 1990, he was honored as a Living Treasure of Santa Fe, and was a recipient of New Mexico's Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Santa Fe Mayor's Recognition Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the Southwestern Association of Indian Artists' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. With a career that spanned more than 50 years, Lloyd Kiva New celebrated a wealth of achievements and received numerous significant awards. To the IAIA Community (students, faculty, staff and alumni), he was an educator and mentor, a friend, and a role model. He was an unparalleled force of creativity and visionary insight. His work was at once inspired and inspiring, and his creative energy and artistic genius radiated out to all who stood in his presence. He was gentle and kind, soft-spoken and wise, and through his voice of leadership and compassion, encouraged students to find their own creative voices and sing their own songs. He dreamed, and showed that dreaming is the root of creativity. For this, we are thankful. For this, we are ever grateful. Lloyd Kiva New leaves behind his wife, Aysen New; two children from a previous marriage, Nancy Sandroff of St. Louis; son, Jeff New from Cortez, Colorado and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lloyd Kiva New Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at IAIA. For directions to the campus, please call 800-804-6423
