Obituary for Garrett

Cokie Garrett, 74, a resident of Rio Rancho since 1982, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2002. He came to New Mexico from California. Cokie was born November 20, 1927 in Edgefield, South Carolina the son of Cliff and Mattie Bronson Garrett. Cokie was a truck driver with ABF Trucking before retiring. At a young age he married his sweetheart, Earlastine Tait. He served in the US Army for six and a half years during WW II and the Korean conflict. The greatest moment he experienced in his life was when he received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1998. He was a true lover of people, animals, fishing, and gardening. He enjoyed traveling with his cousin, William Garrett. Cokie as a giving man who truly gave from his heart. He was preceded in death by one sister, Corine, and a brother, Lewis, his son, Cokie Garrett, Jr. who died in 1989 and his "pals" Guy and Homer. Cokie is survived by his wife, Earlastine of the family home; daughter, Michelle McMihelk and husband, Darryl of California, Valerie Mazes and husband, Rodney of California; seven grandchildren, Daron, Chekona, Megin, Dan, Danae, Brandon, and Kim; great-grandchildren, Daizanae, and Chamira, one grand son-in-law, Fred Cooper; one brother, Rufus Devore of New York, and a host of relatives and friends. A Visitation for Cokie will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln, Rio Rancho, with the Service on Friday, February 22, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Exaulting Jesus Fellowship Church, 436 Pennsylvania NE, Albuquerque, NM (Pennsylvania and Grand). Officiating will be Pastor Don Gordon. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe with Military Honors presented by VFW Post 2951. Pallbearers will be William Garrett, Rodney Mazes, Samuel Mack, Arnold Allen, Darryl McMihelk, and Fred Cooper. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary, Rio Rancho, 892-9920.
