CUTTER -- Jeffery B. Cutter, 60, a resident of Albuquerque, died in his sleep on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. Jeff's life was filled with adventure, learning, self-sufficiency, and fun. He spent the decade prior to his attendance at the University of New Mexico working in construction and traveling extensively throughout North America. After graduating from UNM, magna cum laude with his degree in Anthropology in 1985, he worked in the southwest as an archeologist. In 1989, he moved to West Virginia where he founded a non-profit housing corporation serving the low-income and disabled. In 1996, he resettled in Albuquerque where he continued to share travel, reading, and good times with his family. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing the guitar and writing music, stories, and poetry. Jeff came from a family with a tradition of military service dating back to revolutionary times. Of note, his grandfather, Gen. Egbert Rosecrans served in WWI and both his parents, Clarence E. Cutter and Elizabeth Rosecrans served in WWII. Jeffery enlisted in the army at the age of 17 and served in both Korea and Vietnam. He was strongly opposed to the War on Iraq and did whatever he could to stop the senseless slaughter and criminal waste of the worlds resources and the lives of innocent men, women, and children. GOOCH -- Natalie Tompkins Gooch, born May 9, 1915, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 2007. She was born into one of the oldest military families of the United States Army. Natalie was raised by her paternal aunt after her mother's death. Her father considered her the light of his life as his only surviving child. Natalie was well educated and has told many incredible stories of her childhood in the "Old Army." In 1936, she married First Lieutenant Stacy William Gooch. They would be married sixty-two years, have two children, and become a great asset to the U.S. Military. Stacy, with Natalie as his greatest supporter, achieved Colonel status and became Base Commander at Sandia Base. Natalie and Stacy retired in Albuquerque in 1964. After their retirement they enjoyed skiing at Taos Ski Valley, tennis, travel, entertaining in their home, fishing, golf, and most of all, each other. From the beginning of their marriage, Natalie had devoted herself to becoming a fantastic cook. She will be considered legendary for the parties she master planned and gave in their home hundreds of times over the years. Stacy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1992. Throughout his progressive illness, Natalie remained intensely in love with and deeply devoted to him. She cared for him until he passed away in 1998. Indicative of their lifelong love, and despite the effects of Alzheimer's, Stacy always knew and recognized Natalie. Unable to speak to anyone else, Stacy would say to her, "I love You Nat." Because of their mutual relationship with the God of the Bible, Stacy has once again been reunited with his beautiful bride. Natalie is survived by her son, Bill Gooch of Empire, CO, "Billy Boy," as she affectionately referred to him; daughter, Simone McCarthy of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Germaine Johnson and husband, Rick of Albuquerque; and three great-grandchildren children, all of whom loved their "Mimi" very much. As her great-grandson, Shaeon, said after her death, "I will miss my Mimi very much, but I know she is with Jesus and Stacy." All who knew her will miss her deeply. Her kindness, humor, and love of life were infectious and will remain the gifts she gave to us. Celebration of Life Services will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at St. Mark's on the Mesa Church, 431 Richmond Place NE. Internment will take place Thursday, March 1, 2007 at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Marks on the Mesa, or to your favorite charity. LOPEZ -- Antonio Eric Lopez, first born son to Inez and Valentina Lopez, was born April 5, 1952. Better known as Tony Eric Lopez, he attended Saint Mary's School. Tony is survived by his son, JR Lopez; four daughters, Yvette, Antoinette, Erica, and Rochelle. All of his children were the light of his life. Tony adored them all and the one thing he wanted more than anything, was to share his love with them. He also left behind his brother, Pete Lopez; grandchildren; cousins; a niece, and nephews. Tony was a bright young man, determined to make a mark on the world. He worked hard all his life, first owning a service station and then a mobile auto repair service. His last organization was an owner/operator in the trucking industry. Tony had a great voice and played the trumpet. He was a very kind hearted person and always helping people every where. A coast to coast driver, Tony had many opportunities to help people all across the country. On at least one occasion he stopped and pulled people out of a burning car and saved their life after an accident. He never gave his name to anyone it was just a part of his day. Tony will be really missed by many people because he left us and went home to rest in the arms of the Lord on February 8, 2007. Our world is less for this loss. He also leaves many friends, especially, Margarita Trujillo and family, who will greatly miss him, but are grateful for gifts of love, fun, treasured memories and the precious time he shared with them. I'm free - - Don't grieve for me I'm free; I'm following the path God has laid, you see. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day to laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, o yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with time of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine to tomorrow. My life's been full, I've savored much, good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief, don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee, God wanted me now-He set me free. NORDHAUS -- Robert J. Nordhaus, lawyer, ski pioneer and lifelong New Mexico resident, died peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2007 in Albuquerque at the age of 97. Robert Nordhaus was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico Territory, in 1909, and attended primary schools and high school in Albuquerque, where his family ran the historic Charles Ilfeld Company, one of the largest mercantile firms in New Mexico. He graduated from Yale College with a degree in Economics in 1931 and from Yale Law School in 1935. Soon after, he returned to Albuquerque, where he practiced law and helped run the family business. In 1935, he married Virginia Riggs, of Bronxville, NY, with whom he raised four children. They later divorced. His time in the East introduced him to the sport of skiing, and when he returned to New Mexico after law school, he became president of the Albuquerque Ski Club and developed what is presently Sandia Peak Ski Area, where the group first hiked and skied with primitive skis using toe straps and inner-tube bindings. He joined the army in 1941, helping to organize the newly-formed 10th Mountain Division in Camp Hale, CO, a cadre that was trained specifically for mountain combat. He served as Assistant Division Quartermaster during the troops' campaign in northern Italy during World War II. In 1955, he established the law firm of Nordhaus and Moses, and then in 1980 the firm of Nordhaus, Haltom & Taylor (now known as the Nordhaus Law Firm, LLP). He specialized in water and oil-and-gas law and represented over 40 Indian communities, litigating cases of national significance for the Jicarilla Apache Tribe, Laguna Pueblo and the Council of Energy Resource Tribes. He formed the Sandia Peak Ski and Tram Company in 1962. In 1964 the company completed construction of the Sandia Peak Tramway, one of Albuquerque's major tourist attractions. He was also instrumental in the development of Santa Fe Ski Basin. In 1994, Skiing Magazine named him one of 16 "Founders of Skiing USA." In 1998 he was admitted to New Mexico's Tourism Hall of Fame. He was honored as a New Mexico Living Treasure in 2002 and was inducted into the New Mexico Ski Hall of Fame in 2003. Robert Nordhaus was active in community life, and served with the Albuquerque Planning Commission, the Metropolitan Airport Development Committee, the Albuquerque Community Chest (now the United Way), the Albuquerque Economic Development Service. He was also on the Board of Trustees of the Albuquerque Academy, was one of the organizers of the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque as well as the Tennis Club of Albuquerque. He was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club.
