Ruth Marie Wood, born June 11, 1920 in Altus, OK to James Cecil and Eliza Jane Cunningham, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, February 23, 2007, after a long illness. Marie grew up in Oklahoma, where she met and married her husband, June Wood. Together they moved around the country, living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Alaska. When they moved to New Mexico in 1952, they became active at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, where they were actively involved in fundraising for the new building there. In 1956 they moved to Arizona. Throughout their married life, Marie was a wonderful hostess and partner. She worked with her husband in his insurance business and gave fabulous dinner parties for their many friends. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, decorating and gardening. She also helped her husband in a series of remodeling projects at the many homes they owned over the years. When her husband died in 1989, she continued to care for their lovely home in Scottsdale, AZ, until she decided to move back to Albuquerque in 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, June; and her sister, Beatrice Ausland. She is survived by her son, Donald Wood and wife, Pat of Albuquerque; daughter, Valerie June Wood of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Joe Wood and wife, Tammy of Oklahoma City; Marilee Hill and husband, Jim of Chandler, AZ; Russell Wood and wife, Chrissie of Gilbert, AZ; and Carrie Ann Cook and husband, William "Red" of Phoenix, AZ; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law, Ida Wood; two nephews, Dr. Vernon Wood and Dr. Charles Wood; and niece, Sue Wood Williams. Cremation has taken place and her family will gather in Martha, OK this summer to bury her ashes alongside her father and sister. There will be no formal memorial service. The family wishes to thank the staff of Carefree Living for their loving and gentle care during Marie's stay there. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff of Ambercare Hospice for the comfort and care given to Marie and to her family. She was a loving and generous wife, mother, and grandmother, and she will be sorely missed.
