Elvira D. York, passed away on April 26, 2006 in Park Rapids, MN. She was born in Ashland, WI, Nov. 26, 1917 to Philip D. and Ursulina B. Occhino. She graduated from Central High School in Duluth, MN. She remained in Duluth and was an employee of the Duluth Glass Block Store Co., working in the Credit Department for 14 years. She married Tom Sowden, and they had two children, Maureen and Larry. She loved Albuquerque, making her first visit in 1957 and resided here until 2001, when she relocated to Park Rapids MN. She was an avid hiker in the Sandias and on the trails near the Rio Grande Nature Center, even into her eighties. She was also interested in Native American History, archeology, old trains, and ghost towns of New Mexico. She was a member of the American Assoc. of Retired Persons, and the Bear Canyon Senior Center. In 1961, she moved to Albuquerque, taking a position with the City of Albuquerque, in the Special Assessment Division. In 1968, she married Philip K. York Sr., the first Air Quality Control Engineer for the City of Albuquerque. Philip K. York Sr. passed away in 1985. Elvira is survived by a daughter, Maureen M. And husband, Richard Running and their children of Duluth, MN. And a son, Lawrence T. Sowden, and wife Hilda and their children of Park Rapids, MN. Also surviving are two step children, Philip K. York Jr. and wife Amy of Albuquerque, NM, a step daughter, Rosemary Y. Morrison and Husband William Morrison, and a step granddaughter, Michelle Toft, of San Francisco. Another stepson, Rodney P. York, had passed away Dec. 18, 1993, and his survived by his son, Jason York of Albuquerque. Elvira also survived by her two brothers, Ernest Occhino and his wife, Ruth, their four children, and grandchildren, of Green Bay, WS and Philip Occhino and children of Duluth, MN. She also has two sisters surviving. Marion Bladel, and her two sons, of Davenport, IA, and their families and Norma Occhino, of Duluth, MN, and many nieces and nephews. Interment Service will take place on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE near the main entrance on Menaul.
