ABNEY -- Sandra Abney, 58, passed away Friday, August 5, 2005 in Albuquerque. She was a beautiful courageous spirit who blessed everyone she met, and will be dearly missed. She was born January 26, 1947 to Homer and Charlotte Bostick. Sandra was a graduate of Highland High School. She received an Associate Degree from the University of Phoenix. She worked in many positions at Presbyterian Hospital for 38 years, including Director of Admitting, and most recently as a Human Resource Manager. Sandra married William Abney, November 23, 1968. They were later divorced but have remained close friends. Survivors include her daughter; Erin; her mother, Charlotte; two sisters: Diane Jones; Debbie and husband, Ron Hetes; many nieces, nephews, numerous friends, and two dear dogs, Lyon and Cleo. She was preceded in death by her significant other, Bob Kern; her brother, Wm. Sam Bostick; and her father. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, August 11, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. in the French Mortuary West Side Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. ALDERETE -- Jesse, age 73, passed away on August 8, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Justo and Fona; sister, Beatrice; son, Leonard; and grandson, Michael. He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne; son, Jesse; grandsons, Anthony and Daniel; special friend, Manuela and family; many relatives and close friends. APODACA -- John David Apodaca, age 26, passed away Monday, August 1, 2005 of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his sister, Stephanie. John is survived by his parents, Mariano (Phil), Muriel (Mickey) Apodaca; sister, Cynthia; maternal grandmother, Muriel N. Medley; paternal grandmother, Pita F. Apodaca; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; and very good friend, Brian. John lived and worked in Pagosa Springs, CO where he loved to fish and ski. John will always be remembered as an avid soccer fan and fly fisherman. He was a man who walked along a stream with his beloved dog Leia. Services will be held Thursday, 10:30 at Chester T. BLOOMFIELD -- Ralph Rodell Bloomfield, a resident of Albuquerque for over sixty years, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005. He was born in Ft. Scott, KS, October 12, 1916. Rodell enjoyed lifetime membership in Temple Lodge #6 and Carpenter's Union Local #1319. He loved to garden and was never without a special pet dog. He was preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years, Florence Bloomfield. Rodell was the beloved father of Jerry Bloomfield and wife, Gladys, Johnna Yarbrough, Janiece Loveland and husband, Max, and Cathe Collard. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John and Lori Bloomfield; Mark Yarbrough and wife, Andrea; Steve Yarbrough and fiance, Susie Tallman; Bill Yarbrough; Molly Chandler and husband, Christopher; Sally Sloan and husband, Paul; Jonathan Collard, and Ryann Graye; and great-grandchildren Brian Yarbrough, Scott Yarbrough, and Benjamin Sloan. BUSTAMANTE -- Simon "Jimmie" Bustamante, 84, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2005 at the St. Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe, NM. He was born on April 6, 1921 in Raton, NM to Frederico and Delia Bustamante who preceded him in death. Jimmie served in the United States Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant with Amphibious Engineers in the Aleutian Islands. He was awarded the ATO Medal, APTO Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. In 1946 after being discharged from military service he worked at the Dead Horse Ranch in Ribera, NM, then he and his father built the Bustamante Club also known as the Sunshine Club. In 1955 he opened the Whites Auto Store on 6th Street in Las Vegas, NM. In 1965 he and his brother Pete opened up the Highlander Restaurant. He was also employed for several years by the New Mexico State Land Office. After his retirement he worked part time for Quality Chevrolet. In 1956 he was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives for San Miguel County where he served for eight years under 4 governors: Governor Edwin Leard Mechem, Governor John Burroughs, Governor Jack M. Campbell and Governor Bruce King. During his last two years as a Representative he was appointed Majority Whip for the House of Representatives. He also served two terms as San Miguel County Assessor, served as Vice Chairman for the State Parks Advisory Board under Governor Bruce King and also served on the Planning and Zoning Committee in Las Vegas for 17 years. He was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks where he served as an Exalted Ruler and also a member of the VFW post #1547. He enjoyed spending winter months in Yuma, AZ for several years and enjoyed camping and fishing with friends and family. He is survived by his daughters: Patsy Pacheco and husband, Wil of Las Vegas, NM and Jane Carley and husband,Rick of Albuquerque, NM; sons: Jimmy Bustamante and Danny Bustamante and wife, Loretta, all of Las Vegas, NM; mother of his children: Pita Rivera of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren: Christine Brooke and husband, Don, Eric Pacheco and Lori, Michelle Pacheco and Brian, Rick Carley, Jr. and April, Jamie Martin and husband, Chip, Stephanie Carley, James Bustamante, Jason Bustamante, Lynda Morales and Michael, Justin Vigil and Alexis and Joshua Vigil; great-grandchildren: Victoria, Christian, Malaina, Marissa, Miranda, Michael, Ricky, Brendon, and Devon; sisters: Rose Miller of Moor Park, CA, Katie Sena and husband, Fidel of Albuquerque, NM and Ramona Martinez and husband, Alex of Santa Fe, NM; brother: Pete Bustamante and wife, Mary of Las Vegas, NM; special friends: Irene Bailey of Modesto, CA and Patricia Bustamante of Tucson, AZ; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. CARINO -- Michael N. Carino, 69, passed away suddenly Friday, August 5, 2005 at Princeton Place Nursing Home. A resident of Albuquerque since 1971, Michael was a graphic designer and painter. Born in the Philippine Islands in 1936, Michael came to the U.S. in 1945 at the age of nine. He married Betty Jackson in Elmhurst, IL, in 1962. Together they had four children; Mark Carino of Webster, MN, Micky Carino-Katzenberger of Albuquerque, Jeff Carino of Half Moon Bay, CA, and Joel Carino of San Francisco, CA. Michael is survived by Betty, their children, and grandchildren, Kellam Carino and Isaac Katzenberger. As per the family's wishes, no formal services are scheduled. They will be gathering at the family home over the next few days to remember Michael and celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.

CHAVEZ -- Ernest T. Chavez passed away at home August 6, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Hortencia; his daughters, Ana and her husband, Rich and Tina and her husband, Charles; six grandchildren; his sisters Dora, Daisy, Patsy, and Ramey; his brothers, Harry and Nick; and extended family. Ernest was born November 11, 1924 to Irene Sedillo and Alejandro Chavez. He served in WWII with the US Army Corps of Engineers. In 1955 he was paralyzed in an automobile accident. After his injury, he became involved with the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He began as a volunteer and retired in 1996 as a National Service Director. Ernest dedicated his career to helping disabled veterans. In addition to working with the PVA, Ernest also served on several local and federal level committees to further disabled veterans' issues. He was instrumental in the opening of the Spinal Cord Injury Center in Albuquerque. His hard work and dedication earned the respect of all those who knew him and worked with him. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 9:30 a.m. also at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. CHAVEZ -- Lydia Gabaldon Chavez, 74, was called home to her Heavenly Father, on Friday, August 5, 2005. She was born in Grants, NM on April 22, 1931. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Claude M. Chavez; three sons, Claude R. Chavez, Arthur S. Chavez and wife, Diane, and Michael A. Chavez and wife, Mary Frances; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Chavez and husband, Richard Kowalis. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; and two sisters, Inez Arroyo of Whittier, CA and Amy Arroyo of Apple Valley, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio A. Gabaldon and Ygnacia Zuniga Gabaldon; one brother, Andrew Gabaldon; and one son, Reuben Chavez. Lydia was a lifetime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Her professional career began in the restaurant and hotel business. Lydia was one of the original Fred Harvey Girls. In the 1970s, she changed careers and worked in the electronics industry, in assembly and manufacturing, which included but was not limited to being instrumental in the assembly of the Apollo 13 spacecraft. In the 1980s, Lydia retired to focus on being a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend; and was always placing other people's needs above her own. A special message from her loving husband: Lydia, I love you very much and I will miss you until the Lord God Almighty calls me Home, so we can once again be together. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice for the gentle and loving care they gave Lydia in her final days; with a very special thank you to Edna, Jan, Lori, DeAnna, and Cathy. GARLEY -- Grace A. Garley, 86, a life time resident of New Mexico was called to our beloved Lord on August 7, 2005. Grace is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Stanley M. GIBSON -- Bessie Stiles Gibson. Longtime New Mexico resident and Farmington History Maker Hall of Fame member, Bessie Stiles Gibson, died August 9, 2005 at Manzano Del Sol in Albuquerque. A former Indian trader, and civic worker, Mrs. Gibson was a Past Worthy Grand Matron of Order of Eastern Star and former member of the State Advisory board, Order of Rainbow for Girls. She had been residing in Albuquerque since 1997. GUTIERREZ -- Emma Gutierrez, 84, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 9, 2005. Emma was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and friend. All those that were blessed to know her will miss her incredible wit and love of music, cooking, and dancing. Emma was a member of the Spanish Choir at Queen of Heaven Church for 20 years and enjoyed her time singing at Mass each Sunday. Emma is survived by her husband of 67 years, Johnny; four children, all of Albuquerque, Dr. John Gutierrez and wife, Connie, Rafael Gutierrez and wife, Diana, Dr. Anne Tafoya and husband, Norman, Anthony Gutierrez and wife, Claudia. HARRELL -- Billie Lee, of Albuquerque 72, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 7, 2005. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie, just six weeks ago on June 26, 2005. He was a wonderful husband, father, and "Papa" and will be greatly missed. Although he married our Mom and was our step-father, he was the best Dad ever, and we are all so thankful that God put him in our lives. He is survived by his "kids" Lorraine and David Sanchez, Joyce and Charlie Bart, Bridget Montoya, Babbette and Howard Van Devender, and Donny Smith; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; niece, Kay and Kent Havens; nephew, Gary and Marie Harrell; and many other family and friends. HARVEY -- Mark Stephen Harvey. Our Lord and Savior called home our angel, Mark Stephen Harvey, age 45, Friday, August 5, 2005. Mark was born in Oroville, California October 5, 1959, soon after his family returned from four years in Oxford, England. He lived his early baby years in Albuquerque, then some years in France, but his favorite country was Turkey where he got to ride donkeys and experience the day to day interests of another country and people. His next home was Beale Air Force Base where he started a life long interest in gardening and planted a great garden at ten years old. While living in Florida, Mark was involved with Little League baseball and continued playing ball when he came back to Albuquerque. Mark never met a cat, dog, or other creature that he didn't love and want to keep even when they gave him love bites. His lifelong friend in Albuquerque is Gil Litts. Mark was a graduate of Del Norte High School. He worked hard at everything he did including paperboy and yard work as a young boy. He began his mechanic career in high school and continued it for 21 years working at an Exxon Station and then at Bill's Auto Parts & Service, both owned by his Father. Being a mechanic was only one of many jobs that he was successful at. Mark also worked various jobs, in an oriental restaurant, construction companies, and also worked with a painting company owned by his lifelong friend's Father. Mark had a green thumb throughout his life. He loved gardening and sharing all the produce that he grew in abundance. Mark did everything in abundance including the love he shared with family, relatives and friends he met along the way. He was always ready and willing to help anyone do anything! He loved the great outdoors, and in 1985, his dream came true to live in the mountains. In 1990 he married Anita Mae Sanchez, who he secretly admired throughout his school years. In 1997 they were blessed with a son, Nicholas Stephen, the jewel in his life. Mark's career and focus in life changed as he willingly took on the responsibility to care for his son. They share a never ending bond of love. "He is the best Dad in the whole wide world!" says Nicholas. Recently, a dear friend of the family was in need of help with their several acres of land and home. Without hesitation, Mark devoted his time and energy into helping them out. He was preceded in death by his beloved niece, Erica Harvey of Phoenix, AZ; paternal grandparents, Loren and Verna Grace Harvey of West Palm Beach, FL; maternal grandparents, John Sumner Mills of Bridgeport, CT, Edna Anna Mills of Saratoga Springs, NY. JOHNSON -- Mary Opal Johnson fell asleep in the Lord Sunday, August 7, 2005. She was born in Wright County, MO to Luther and Lena Durham Watson on October 21, 1908. She was married to Dale Johnson on June 1, 1930 in Colorado Springs, CO. Opal worked many years for the Public Service of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She and her husband belonged to a Square Dance Club in the 50s and 60s. They taught square dancing in the Albuquerque schools. Mrs. Johnson was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Dale; and nephew, Richard Thomas Moore and wife, Maricela. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her son, Donald Dale Johnson. JOHNSON -- Norma E. Johnson, 85, an Albuquerque resident since 1959, died Saturday, August 6, 2005. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sons, Ron Johnson of Rio Rancho, NM and Jim Johnson and wife, Rita of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Marina Johnson Zagar and husband, Gary, of Redwood City, CA; grandson, Jamie Johnson and wife, Veronica of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Zachery Zagar, Morgan Johnson; brother, John D. Copple and wife, Ardis of Racine, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellery Johnson in 1994. KUPER -- Eric William Kuper, 48, of Escalante, UT, passed away August 6, 2005, at his home in Escalante. He was born March 14, 1957, in Albuquerque, NM, to William and Eileen Graffee Kuper. Eric worked as a firefighter, horse packer, hunting guide, and carpenter. He loved spending time outdoors. Eric was well liked and made friends easily wherever he lived. Eric was a veteran of the Coast Guard and throughout his life he resided in Alaska, New Mexico, and Utah. MELENEY -- William Phelps Meleney, DVM, "Bill", a resident of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho for over 50 years, passed away at home on Thursday, August 4, 2005 after an extensive illness. William was born December 24, 1921 to Dr. and Mrs. Edmund Meleney while they were in Bejing, China, working for the Rockefeller Foundation. Bill spent most of his childhood in Nashville, Tenn. During WW II he was a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Field Service in Italy and North Africa. He graduated from Cornell University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1951 and, after a few years in private practice, he went to work for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He was associated with the Albuquerque USDA Lab on So. Broadway, doing research for the eradication of parasites in sheep and cattle until the department moved to Kerrville, TX in 1978. When he retired, he followed his dream of owning a sailboat and cruising the Chesapeake Bay. He then returned to NM in 1993. Bill was an Elder in the Rio Rancho Seventh-day Adventist Church and held several offices over the span of many years. He was an avid and enthusiastic bowler and early on was a Youth Bowling Instructor. He was loved by all and he especially loved the children. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Edmund, Jr. and his stepdaughter, Dorothea Bulkley. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverley; son, William Phelps, Jr.; daughter, Kelsey "Kim" Wilkes; stepsons, Daniel and William Bulkley; stepdaughter, Kathleen Wettengel; niece, Janet Meleney-Kriebel; nephew, Henry E. Meleney, III; and 11 grandchildren. SANCHEZ -- CECILIA M. Mrs. Cecilia M. Sanchez, aged 90, of Albuquerque, NM passed away Sunday evening ,August 7, 2005 at a local hospital. She was born April 16, 1915 to Roman and Francisca Montoya in Tajique, NM. She married Pedro "Pete" Sanchez on January 4, 1934 in Punta de Agua, NM. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1994 after 60 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughters, Adelaida Sanchez, Rita Andrews, Bernice and her husband, John Lawrence Chavez; her sons, Clem and his wife, Rosemary Sanchez, David and his wife, Armida Sanchez, Lucky and his wife, Lynn Sanchez of Edison, NJ, Ivan Sanchez, Pete Sanchez Jr., Tony and his wife, Nancy Sanchez, Orlando Sanchez, Bobby and his wife, Corinne Sanchez; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Clara Barboa, Julianita Candelaria, Brigida Otero; her brothers, Nicolas, Manuel, and Jeremias Montoya. Prior to her death, loving care was provided by her daughter, Rita Andrews. She enjoyed cooking for her family and anyone who happened to drop by her home. She was well known for her posole, pastelitos and her red chile. She also enjoyed dancing with her late husband, Pete at the San Jose Senior Center. She was the heart of her large family and will be greatly missed by them and others. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2005 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel with the Rosary Service being recited at 6:00 pm on Wednesday. SEIBERT -- Alvin W. Seibert, 98, resident of Rio Rancho, passed away August 3, 2005, Alvin was born July 16, 1907, the son of Adam and Alta Seibert in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. He worked for Western Electric as an electrician. Retired to New Mexico in 1971 from Indianapolis, IN. A devout Christian and a member of the Alameda Bible Church. Alvin has two daughters, Dolores Ross of Buffalo Grove, IL and Doris Ainsworth of Rio Rancho, NM. Al has nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. SHELTON -- Billy R. Shelton (Bill) went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 6, 2005. Bill was born in Athens, TX on January 3, 1933, raised in Altus, OK, and was a long-term resident of Albuquerque. Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosalie K.; a son, John Stephen Shelton of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Nelda Ducharme of Deltona, FL; and brother, Mickey Shelton of Altus, OK. He is also survived by four nephews and three nieces. Bill retired from the Air Force after 21 years; and from French Mortuary after 20 years. Bill was a longtime active member of Hoffmantown Church. He has served as a Deacon, Bible Class Teacher for over 35 years; as well as a Trustee of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1982-1992. Bill was devoted to his Lord, loved his family, and enjoyed RVing, musical events, reading; as well as being as avid bible student for over 45 years. SKOLNICK -- Saul Skolnick, 83, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was born November 10, 1921 in Manhattan, NY. He came to New Mexico in 1948 and worked for many years at Los Alamos, retiring from Sandia Labs in 1986. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna; a son, Russell; and a brother, Jack. SWEAZEA -- Ray Sweazea, age 77, a resident of Mountainair, NM, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2005. Ray was a member of the Masons for many years. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Ray loved the outdoors and would always head to the mountains to hunt and fish, up until his illness began to slow him down. He was an accomplished cutting horse trainer and he raised and trained many quarter horses throughout his life. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Emily Sweazea; and by all of his loving brothers and sisters. Ray is survived by his three children, Patricia McNiel and her husband, Steve; and Karen McKinley, all of Bosque Farms, and Kevin and his wife, Jenny of Mountainair, NM; four grandchildren, Ben, Samantha, Nicole, and Carl. TAYLOR -- Leif Taylor, age 51 and a lifelong New Mexico resident, left this life on August 5, 2005. He was born on July 8, 1954 in Albuquerque. He was the owner and operator of the Art Framing Center in Albuquerque for the past 20 years. His sisters, Mary Ann and Lisa Titzl both preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Monica Taylor; son, Richard "RJ", age 15; and a daughter, Crista, age 10. Also surviving Leif are his mother, Pauline Peterson and father, Richard Titzl, both of Albuquerque; three brothers, Karl Titzl, Tom Titzl of Albuquerque and Rick Titzl along with Karen Beck of Edgewood; as well as a sister, Barbara and her husband, Rudy Fajardo. Leif had two nephews, Daniel and Evan Fajardo; and three nieces, Vanessa, Janel, and Angela Titzl. An aunt and uncle, Trueheart and Robert Titzl of Louisville, KY, also survive him. Leif was a member of the Lobo Club and was a dedicated Lobo fan. He was an avid golfer and bowler and played softball. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends and will be in our hearts and memory forever. WAGNER -- Mark W. Wagner, 43, died tragically from being struck by a drunk driver on July 31, 2005 in Amity Township, PA, after moving there from Albuquerque eight weeks ago. He is survived by his two sons, Tyler Wagner, 18, and Cory Wagner, 5; father and step-mother, Conrad and Sue; mother, Leah Tait; brothers, Scott, David and Christopher; sisters, Liz and Denise; ex-wife, Nancy; and many, many friends and people that loved him. Mark was born on February 16, 1962. He graduated from Eldorado High School in 1980 and joined the Marine Corp. He later obtained his CDL and worked for trucking companies in New Mexico and Pennsylvania. He had most recently worked in Albuquerque for Zanios Foods. Mark married his first wife, Liz and they had Tyler in 1986. He was a lead singer in a band and enjoyed it very much. Mark subsequently moved back to Pennsylvania for a few years but returned to Albuquerque in 1994 so he could be closer to Tyler. Mark and Nancy met in 1995 and were married in 1997 until January of 2005. They had a son, Cory, born in 2000. Mark had a great love for his sons and his music that he wrote and played. He was a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, he enjoyed his 1969 GTO, and taking walks with Cory and watching Tyler participate in sports. Mark loved his two sons very much and will be watching over them the rest of their lives. Mark was very much loved and will be missed. Cremation services will be held on August 6, 2005 in Pennsylvania. WALKER -- Pauline (Polly) Marie Wernicke Walker, born November 7, 1915, in Columbus, OH, passed away early Sunday August 7, 2005, in Albuquerque, supported by loving caregivers, family, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, the Honorable E S Johnny Walker, former Congressman from the State of New Mexico (1965-1969), who died in October, 2000. She is survived by her son, Stephen Michael and his significant other, Gari Fails; her daughter, Janet Mary and her husband, Richard H. Steele; grandsons, John Walker and his wife, Stacey Walker, Andrew Steele, and David Steele; and granddaughter, Amy Holder and her husband, John Holder; and by her great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Otto Frank Wernicke and Anna Marie Dober Wernicke; and by her brother, Karl Wernicke; and her two sisters, Marie Hecker and Elsie Wolz. Before her career as a devoted wife and mother she was an outstanding secretary working in Washington, DC, for her Congressman from Ohio and later the National Archives. In Albuquerque she was on the staff of Clyde Tingley when he was Mayor of Albuquerque. She was a multifaceted person who had many interests which included her husband's political career, her garden, her family, and her cats. She was truly a member of the "Greatest Generation." The family would like to especially thank her caregivers and Presbyterian Hospice staff who cared for her during the last months of her life. Zanin, both of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jeremiah Zanin and wife, Betsy of Champaine, IL and Justin Zanin of Albuquerque; brothers, Freddy Downing and wife, Peggy of California, Royce Downing of Arizona; sisters, Wanda Moore of Amarillo, TX and Darlene Baker and husband, Jack of Arizona. Mrs. Zanin was a member of the Albuquerque Rose Society. She volunteered at All Faith's Receiving Home. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at Chester T.
