AVERY -- Mary Dell Avery, 87, a resident of Albuquerque for 58 years, died on Saturday, March 6, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Centers and husband, Carl; son, Bob Avery and wife, Maxine, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Lucille Garcia, Jeff Centers and wife, Lori all of Albuquerque, Chris Centers and wife, Melanie of Phoenix, AZ, Carol Lee Johns and husband, Jeremy of Houston, TX, and Ryan Avery of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Aaron Johns, Alyssa Johns, and Avery Centers; sisters, Sibyl Slocomb of Texas, and Dorothy Hayman of Albuquerque; brother, Warren Graybill of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Ray Avery on September 16, 1977, two brothers and a sister. Mary Dell worked at Lovelace Hospital for 27 years and was a long time active member of Grace Church. BONHAM -- Josephine H. Bonham passed away March 7, 2004. She was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church and active in the Presbyterian Women's Group, helping distribute commodities. Josephine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clifford A. Bonham Sr. and is survived by her sister, Mary Alice Crespin; sons Clifford A. Bonham Jr., and wife Kristen and Marin P. Perez; daughters Diana E. Hamilton and her husband Dennis, Evangeline Mikesell and husband Robert, Michele M. Peralta and husband Manuel, Karen Thompson and husband Kevin; 25 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; many, many nephews, nieces friends and church members who loved and will miss her. BORDER -- Anna Belle Border, 76, a resident of Albuquerque since 1972, died Friday, March 5, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Patty Vasquez of Albuquerque; son, Ronnie Tobias of Reading, PA; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister. She was a member of Northdale Baptist Church. Anna Belle was a state employee for 19 years and a prominent member of the American Business Women's Association and Mountain View Rebekah Lodge # 36. Anna Belle loved making friends with anyone she met and collecting things. Services will be Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. BRESSAN -- Leo H. Bressan, 82, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, March 7, 2004. He is survived by his sons, Richard Bressan and wife, Karla of Albuquerque; and Thomas Bressan of San Francisco, CA; two granddaughters, Katie and Krissy Bressan of Albuquerque; aunt, Anne Calabrese of Erie, PA; a sisters-in-law, Gerri Bressan of Erie, PA; Ruth Stewart and husband, Clint of Erie, PA; Eli Sebring of Paradise, CA; brothers-in-law, Bob Gardner and wife, Charlotte of Albuquerque; Ed Gardner of Las Vegas, NV; a cousin, Michael DiMonaco; and wife Patte of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn in 1995, and a son, William Bressan and his wife, Diana Sanchez Bressan and his brother, Joseph. Leo was born at home May 23, 1921 in Crosby, Pennsylvania. He graduated from high school in Bradford, PA. He moved to Erie where he worked for General Electric. In 1953 he moved to Albuquerque with his family to work for Sandia National Labs from where he retired. He enjoyed being with his family, his church, hunting, fishing, bowling, horseshoes, and golf. He was active at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for over 50 years where he volunteered for Saint Vincent de Paul. He was dedicated to the Boys Scouts of America and was honored for decades of service. Leo was an amateur radio operator (WD5HCB) and spent much of his retirement years working with New Mexico Search and Rescue, American Red Cross and RACES. CLEMENTS -- Anna Marie Clements, 43, a native of Albuquerque, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2004. She is survived by her brother, Eric Clements of Jefferson, MD; sisters, Phyllis and Linda Clements of Fredrick, MD, Sharon Clements of Clovis, NM, Christina Clements of Seattle, WA; stepbrother, David King of Albuquerque; stepmother, Vickie Clements of Jefferson, MD; as well as an extended family living in Albuquerque. GALLEGOS -- Josephine Gallegos, 80, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away at home Sunday, March 7, 2004. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many. She was a remarkable woman whose caring, loving ways left their mark on all whose lives she blessed. Her presence will be eternally missed, but her spirit will live on in all of our hearts. GARNER -- Lucile (Lucy) Marie Garner, born March 6, 1916, in Albuquerque died March 6, 2004. She was a faithful and devout Catholic and a founding member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents Florenzina and Frednando Tagliaferro, sisters Stella Semrau, Louise Tagliaferro, Frances Pearce and Irene Chiado, husband Alton Garner and daughter K. Dianne Katz. She is survived by her brother Tony Tagliaferro and wife Billie of Albuquerque and sister Jennie McNeil of Farmington, N.M. and many nieces and nephews. Lucy graduated from Albuquerque High School and Western School of Business. She was employed as a civil servant for more than 40 years. Lucy and her beloved husband Al traveled extensively during his tour of duty with the Navy and later during their retirement. They were avid fishermen and she would often go with Al on his hunting trips. They loved their dogs especially Tojo who was her faithful companion after Al's death. Lucy loved to garden and won many first place ribbons for her roses. Lucy was a loyal friend and will be missed by all her friends and family. HARRIS -- Vinita "Nita" Evelyn Booth Harris, 83, a resident of Albuquerque for 38 years, died Tuesday, March 09, 2004 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Army Colonel (Ret) Judd Thomas Harris, Jr., in 1999. She is survived by five children; Kristin Booth Harris Pilling; Michael Thomas Harris and wife, Sandy; Craig Mitchell Harris; Steven Patrick Harris and wife, Gena all of Albuquerque; and Scott William Harris and wife, DeeDee of Fort Worth, TX. She leaves ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to raising five children, and being a Career Army Wife, she retired from Kirtland Weapons Lab after a long and successful civil service career in 1992. She graduated from the University of Washington, Phi Beta Kappa, was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and the Evening Optimist Club of Albuquerque. She was an accomplished bridge player, seamstress, water and snow skier. Services will be Monday, March 15, 2004 at 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. HERRING -- Edwin B. Herring, M.D., age 81, died on March 8, 2004. In 1958, he moved his young family to Albuquerque from Memphis, Tennessee. Though a son of the South, he considered himself to be a proud New Mexican. He was born on April 24, 1922, to Noel C. Herring and Gertrude H. Herring. He is survived by Mary C. Herring, his beloved wife of 54 years; and his children, Edwin Herring and wife, Tonya Herring; William Herring and wife, Cheri Davis; John Herring and wife, Debra Herring; and Nancy Herring and Matthew Segura. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Harthcock of Indianola, MS; and grandchildren, Kelly Herring, Alexander Herring, David Herring, Andrew Herring, and Elizabeth Herring. His parents and his younger brother David, preceded him in death, as did his son, David C. Herring. Dr. Herring attended Southwestern College in Memphis and the University of the South at Sewanee, where he enrolled in the U.S. Navy V-12 Training Program. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1948. He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1952 as Senior Medical Officer aboard the USS Sicily, an aircraft carrier at sea during the Korean Conflict. In 1954, he began a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Tennessee and City of Memphis Hospitals, and in 1958 he came to Albuquerque to take a position as pathologist at Van Atta Laboratory at Medical Arts Square. In 1965, Dr. Herring joined Presbyterian Hospital as pathologist and Laboratory Director, a position he held until 1982. He retired in 1993 as Director Emeritus of Laboratories at Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Herring was very active in state and national professional affairs and in various community service organizations. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the College of American Pathologists and served on many committees of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Locally, he served as President of both the New Mexico Society of Pathologists and the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Medical Society. He was Medical Director of United Blood Services of New Mexico from 1960 until 1977, and was a founding director and officer of the New Mexico Physicians Mutual Liability Company. He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque for the past 40 years. During this time, Dr. Herring somehow found the time to teach his five children how to fly-fish, hunt, and ski in northern New Mexico. Following his retirement, Ed and Mary were able to travel the world: China, Africa, and opera tours in the United States and Europe. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 12, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church at 431 Richmond Place NE in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made in the name of Dr. Edwin Herring to the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

JOHNSON -- Fred W. Johnson, 83, died March 8, 2004. Fred was born 1-29-21 in Bronx, New York. He was an accountant with Rand McNally in New York; corporate secretary/treasurer with Sproul Enterprises in New Mexico, Colorado and California. He loved music - played the clarinet in the high school band, and played with Big Bands in the Pochonos. He also loved fishing, camping, and collecting rocks. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carolyn. Other survivors include his son, Henry and wife, Jan of Santa Fe, and their two sons, David Johnson of Rio Rancho, and Adam Johnson of Santa Fe. Four daughters: Maude and her husband, Richard Buhrer of California, and their two sons, Eric and Pat, also of California. Gail and her husband, Karl Noble of Littleton, Colorado, and their two sons, Aaron and Luke also of Colorado. Sandra and her husband, Bruce Mayes and their two sons, Willie and Kodie, all of Estancia. Jan Johnson (Henry's wife) of Santa Fe. Fred's only brother, Herb Johnson, and his wife, Betty, of Florida. There are six great-grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service on March 12, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Riverside, 3100 LaOrilla NW, Albuquerque, with Mark McKenzie, Minister, officiating. JOHNSON -- Katie Johnson, 96, a lifelong resident of Belen, New Mexico, peacefully passed away in an Albuquerque hospital on March 6, 2004. She was a very active resident of Belen, being in business there for many years. She was also very active in civic organizations being a member of Belen Chamber of Commerce as well as a past worthy matron of Eastern Star, past president of Belen Pilot Club, and a founding member of First Presbyterian Church in Belen. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the same group for 60 years. Katie was preceded in death by her husband, M.J. "Lefty" Johnson, three brothers, one sister and one grandchild. She is survived by her children, son, Jim Johnson and his wife, Jan; daughter, Carol and her husband, Paul Wood; her grandchildren, Bryan Johnson, Julia and her husband, Steve Scotti, Chuck Smrt and his wife, Sue, Jim Smrt and his wife, Jacque, Dina and her husband, Brian Bell and Sandy and her husband, Ron Beck. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Tiffany, Shannon, Lexi, Hanah, Brady, Cassidy and Stephen; her sister-in-law, Barbara Calhoun; nieces, Betty Hodge and Paula Keeper; nephew, Steve Calhoun and several great nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Gloria Rael who was her wonderful caretaker for two years. Also a thank you to the ladies that cared for her in Albuquerque at the Village at Alameda for one year. KIRCHER -- John A. Kircher, 82, passed away on March 2, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in Albany, NY to Louis and Elsie Sheehan Kircher. He married Mary Hunsberger on November 19, 1923. John was a chemical engineer at Los Alamos National Labs, retiring after 40 years of dedicated service. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, C. Paul Kircher. LASLO -- Lt. Col. Alexander J. Laslo passed away March 1, 2004, at the age of 63. He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer M. Laslo and Nancy Laslo; and family and friends, Jeanette Laslo, Anathea Griego, David Byroad, Vince Rodriquez, and others. Lt. Col. Laslo served his country in the Air Force for 22 years. He was an avid collector of WWI medals and stamps. He was also author of several books on WWI Victory Medals. LOPEZ -- Emilio Lopez, age 92, of Los Lunas, New Mexico died on Wednesday, March 3, 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Chavez Lopez; and his mother, Concepcion "Concha" Lopez . Emilio was raised and educated in Albuquerque; graduating from Albuquerque High School, and receiving a master's degree from The University of New Mexico where he lettered in both basketball and football. After college, he began his teaching and coaching career at Gadsden High School in Anthony, New Mexico where he taught for one year. He then joined the Los Lunas school system. During his long, outstanding tenure, he was a high school classroom teacher, basketball and football coach, administrator, and principal until his retirement. Emilio died in the state of grace and was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, 244 Luna Ave., Los Lunas. In accordance with his most profound wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Clement Catholic Church in Los Lunas on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. He has been laid to rest alongside his mother at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque. NIWA -- Mary F. Niwa, 86, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, and formerly of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2004. Mary was born September 19, 1917 in Terre Haute, Indiana and lived the early years of her life there. She attended school at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois where she received her nursing degree. In 1940 she married the late John A. Niwa and following her retirement they resided in Albuquerque, NM for several years. She had resided in Dothan, AL since 1990. Mary was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, John G. Niwa and wife Ann of Gore, OK; two daughters, Carol Jordan and husband Marvin of Dothan, AL, and Mary Ann Silvia and husband Robert of Applevalley, CA; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. NOBLES -- Jennifer Roberts Nobles passed away March 6, 2004, in Louisville, CO. Born to Walter Orr Roberts and Janet Smock on August 1, 1946 in Denver, CO. Jennifer married Charles "Chuck" Nobles in 1996 in Albuquerque, NM. She graduated from boulder high school and attended the University of Colorado. She received her BS from the University of New Mexico and her MSW Masters of Social Work from University of Denver. She was employed as a social worker in Albuquerque, NM and later with Longmont Hospital. Most recently she worked with the Mapleton Center and Boulder Community Hospital. Jennifer enjoyed being with her grandchildren, gardening, and boating on Lake Powell. She was a member of the National Association of Social workers and Phi Beta Kappa. In her words "I loved my family unconditionally, had a warm heart and a big smile. I loved my work as a social worker and am very proud of my children". Survivors include her husband, Chuck Nobles of Boulder, CO; mother, Janet Roberts of Boulder, CO, her son, Scott McCarthy of Pacific Palisades, CA, daughter, Kim McKeen of Louisville, CO; Grandchildren, Johnna McCarthy, Taryn McCarthy and Ethan McCarthy of Pacific Palisades, CA and Olivia McKeen and soon to be Lauren McKeen and soon to be Lauren McKeen both of Louisville, CO; brothers, David Roberts of Cambridge, MA, Alan Roberts of Boulder, CO and Jon Roberts of Boulder, CO. RICE -- Jessie M. Rice, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, died on Saturday, March 6, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger B. Rice, in 2003. Jessie was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1914. Jessie graduated from Marshall University in 1936 and taught school at Man High School from 1936 to 1939 in Man, West Virginia. She married Roger in 1939. From 1965 to 1968, she was a substitute teacher at Plainfield High School in Plainfield, Illinois. She and Roger ran their own business in Albuquerque from 1968 to retirement. ROMERO -- Gilbertlee J. Romero was 21 years old, born on April 25, 1982, died suddenly on March 7, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. SALAS -- John Salas, age 82, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother was called home by our Heavenly Father, Sunday, March 7, 2004. John was born in Pena Blanca to the late Nicholas and Candelaria Salas; he was a resident of Alameda; and a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. John was the owner and operator of the Five Points Barber Shop for over 50 years; he was a proud Honorable Veteran of the United States Army who served our country during World War II; and was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post #13. TENBROECK -- Della B. Tenbroeck, age 90, a resident of Albuquerque for 82 years died on March 7, 2004. She was born on January 25, 1914 in Verona, New York. Della moved to Albuquerque with her family in 1922, and worked for Valliant Printing Co. for many years. She met and married Hugh Tenbroeck in 1935. She is preceded in death by her husband Hugh Tenbroeck in 1970. TOWNER -- Clara Elise Towner, 87, a longtime resident of Veradale, Washington, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2004 from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Pasco, WA she attended Whitworth College and married Dr. Alonzo A. Towner in 1936. The Towner's became a military family in 1939 traveling throughout the world until Elise's husband retired in 1972 as the Air Force Surgeon General. During their lifetime together Elise enjoyed playing and teaching piano music as well as entertaining many friends and dignitaries. They resided at 2515 Timberlane Dr, Veradale, WA where she was surrounded by the company and affection of her many cats. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; and a daughter, Connie, in 1950. She cared for her mother, also a victim of Alzheimer's, from 1980 until her death in 1990. In 1999 her son, Lt. Colonel Don Towner, moved her into his home in Albuquerque where she was cared for until her death. She is survived by two brothers, Lynn Aldrich, Prescott, AZ and Harl Aldrich, Concord MA; her daughter, Carolyn Long, also a piano teacher, of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, Tika and Todd Long and Carl and Stephen Towner; and one great-granddaughter, Brianna Carter.
