Edwin B. Herring, M.D., age 81, died on March 8, 2004. In 1958, he moved his young family to Albuquerque from Memphis, Tennessee. Though a son of the South, he considered himself to be a proud New Mexican. He was born on April 24, 1922, to Noel C. Herring and Gertrude H. Herring. He is survived by Mary C. Herring, his beloved wife of 54 years; and his children, Edwin Herring and wife, Tonya Herring; William Herring and wife, Cheri Davis; John Herring and wife, Debra Herring; and Nancy Herring and Matthew Segura. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Harthcock of Indianola, MS; and grandchildren, Kelly Herring, Alexander Herring, David Herring, Andrew Herring, and Elizabeth Herring. His parents and his younger brother David, preceded him in death, as did his son, David C. Herring. Dr. Herring attended Southwestern College in Memphis and the University of the South at Sewanee, where he enrolled in the U.S. Navy V-12 Training Program. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1948. He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1952 as Senior Medical Officer aboard the USS Sicily, an aircraft carrier at sea during the Korean Conflict. In 1954, he began a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Tennessee and City of Memphis Hospitals, and in 1958 he came to Albuquerque to take a position as pathologist at Van Atta Laboratory at Medical Arts Square. In 1965, Dr. Herring joined Presbyterian Hospital as pathologist and Laboratory Director, a position he held until 1982. He retired in 1993 as Director Emeritus of Laboratories at Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Herring was very active in state and national professional affairs and in various community service organizations. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the College of American Pathologists and served on many committees of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Locally, he served as President of both the New Mexico Society of Pathologists and the Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Medical Society. He was Medical Director of United Blood Services of New Mexico from 1960 until 1977, and was a founding director and officer of the New Mexico Physicians Mutual Liability Company. He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque for the past 40 years. During this time, Dr. Herring somehow found the time to teach his five children how to fly-fish, hunt, and ski in northern New Mexico. Following his retirement, Ed and Mary were able to travel the world: China, Africa, and opera tours in the United States and Europe. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 12, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church at 431 Richmond Place NE in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made in the name of Dr. Edwin Herring to the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation and the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.
