BUTCHER -- Susan Elizabeth November 21, 1960 to April 15, 2009 A light did indeed go out in Santa Fe, when architect and designer Susan Elizabeth Butcher died at her home in Galisteo, NM on April 15, 2009 at age 48 after a long, courageous battle with cancer, during which she continued her grand humor, her full and contagious laugh and passion for visiting with friends. Her husband, Henry, never wavered in her difficult care and was always beside her. A 1978 graduate of Sandia High School, she spent her junior year in France as a foreign exchange student. While studying ballet with Lucy Hayden at the Hayden School of Ballet for 12 years, Susan became an accomplished ballet student, a discipline in which she took great pride. A native of Albuquerque, NM, Susan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture from Princeton University in 1983 and a Master's of Architecture cum laude from Princeton in 1987. Her talent and sophistication were apparent in her student work. Like Susan herself, her design work and drawings were elegant, delicate, precise, and graceful. She had the confidence and aesthetic vision to find the perfect balance of design elements that made her projects both tasteful and unique. She began her career at Hardy, Holtzman, Pfeiffer Associates in New York in 1980. While at Hardy, Holtzman, she worked on the feasibility study for the redesign of the Grand Central Terminal. In June, 1983 Susan was hired as a designer by award winning architect Michael Graves in Princeton, and rose to Director of Interiors before leaving in September 1990. Her projects at Graves included the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels, both receiving the AIA Mid-Florida Chapter Design Award, and the Aventine Hyatt Hotel in La Jolla, California. She was also involved in the firm's design work on the Humana Corporate Headquarters in Louisville, KY and the Emory University Museum of Modern Art in Atlanta, which were recipients of the prestigious AIA National Award. She is acknowledged as a Project Assistant in Grave's book "Michael Graves Buildings and Projects 1982-1989." After leaving Graves' firm, Susan served as Director of Architectural Design for Tishman Construction Corp. of New York from 1990-91. While at Tishman she worked on the Chicago Sheraton and the Rio Mar Resort in Puerto Rico. The founder of Susan Butcher Design, Susan was known for her interior work on hotels, restaurants, and museums, as well as residences. One of her collaborators was her husband, designer Henry Noestheden. She created her eponymous design firm in 1991 in New Mexico where she was a registered Architect. Her major projects included interior design work for the Eldorado Hotel and the Inn of the Anasazi, both in Santa Fe, as well as the Four Seasons Resort in Nevis, West Indies. The Fairmont at the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Westin Hotel in Detroit. Works still in progress were a large vacation home in Anquilla, a mountain home in Vail, Colorado, and a three house ranch complex in Marfa, Texas. "In addition to her passion for architecture, design, and fashion, Susan loved to cook, and even as a student would entertain friends with delicious and beautiful meals. Whether it was an impromptu dinner, or her wedding celebration with Henry, Susan created memorable events where her attention to detail made everyone feel welcome and special. Susan's witty perspective helped her friends and colleagues cope with the pressure of deadlines both in graduate school and at the office. But her humor didn't hide her serious approach to her design work, and her solid commitment to her friends." (Nancy Clayton, AIA) "I respected her intelligence, admired her achievements as a professional and was humbled by her generosity, kindness and consideration as a friend. She did touch my life and made a difference in who I am." (designer and childhood friend, Eric Montoya.) Susan is survived by her husband Henry Noestheden; her parents Barry Miller and Elizabeth Anne Butcher of Albuquerque; and two brothers William Robert Butcher and partner Craig W. Thomsen of Portland, OR, and James Douglas Butcher, wife Crystal Montgomery Butcher and their three children Anastasia Michelle, Cameron James and Nathan Montgomery. Susan's life will be celebrated on June 27, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Galisteo. Guests are asked to RSVP and receive further directions by e-mail to jl@sbdsf.com or by calling Susan Butcher Design at (505) 982-7648. A scholarship in Susan's memory is being established at the University of Cincinnati, where she mentored Interior Design students, and where her own mentor, Michael Graves, holds an Honorary Doctorate Degree. For those wishing to contribute, further details of the fund will be available at the Memorial or by calling Susan Butcher Design at (505) 982-7648. DE GEER -- Bennie Esquivel De Geer, age 93, died peacefully at home in San Francisco, CA on May 18, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; sisters, Lola Nabors and Ruth Esquibel; and brothers, Barney Esquibel and Silvestre Esquibel. She is survived by her only daughter, Emilia De Geer; and beloved son-in-law, Sudhir Puri, of San Francisco; sisters, Marian Esquivel of Albuquerque, Femia Bustamante and husband Jim, of Santa Fe; and brother Medardo Esquibel of Albuquerque. Bennie, the eldest sibling of the late Eugenio and Emilia Esquivel of Socorro, was born and raised in La Joya. The family moved to Socorro, and in 1937 Bennie was elected to the office of County Schools Superintendent. There she met her husband-to-be while he was working for the WPA. Little did they know what an amazing adventure was in store for them. Not only did they travel world over, they also spent 13 years in Venezuela and five years in Iran, before settling in San Francisco where Ralph later retired from Chevron Oil. It was in San Francisco that Bennie became an active community organizer working for senior citizen causes as a VISTA (Peace Corps) volunteer. Later, under the auspices of a joint program of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and The Salvation Army, she worked in community outreach counseling evicted seniors and families. Although Bennie and Ralph left Albuquerque to live overseas after the birth of their daughter in 1947, she carried and spread the spirit of New Mexico wherever she went. An invitation to one of Bennie's enchilada dinner parties was among the most sought-after in town. And, whether in Caracas, Tehran or San Francisco, the family celebrated Christmas by preparing and sharing the festive specialties of her beloved land. Per her wishes, Bennie is coming "home." A Funeral Service, officiated by Deacon Tom Perez, will be held at San Felipe de Neri Church in Old Town on June 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Honorary pallbearers present -- or present in spirit -- will be her niece, Juanita Prewitt of Albuquerque, and nephews, Richard Esquibel of San Francisco, Alan Nabors of Seattle, WA; J. Bustamante, Frank Esquibel and Martin Esquivel, all three of Albuquerque. Committal of Bennie's cremated remains takes place at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., when she will rejoin her beloved husband in eternal rest.

GOLDSMITH -- Richard Atwood Goldsmith, 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather left us on June 17, 2009 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Dick was born in Syracuse, NY in 1929 and was raised in Central Square, NY. When he was 15, Dick visited the Southwest with friends and became captivated by the scenery, culture, and people. KUCHIN -- Alger Terrace Kuchin, born Algieras Patras Kucinskas, on Dec 23, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois, died at home in Bainbridge Island, Washington, June 9, 2009 at the age of 93. He was the son of Lithuanian immigrants, Peter and Grace Kuchin. His father had immigrated from Lithuania, reportedly to avoid the Russian draft. His mother was born in Scotland prior to her families move to the US. Al grew up in Chicago, experiencing the full impact of the depression during his youth. At the age of five, following his first day of school, he arrived home and announced to his parents that he was no longer going to speak Lithuanian - because he was an American. He loved baseball as a teenager - actually tried out for one of the Chicago teams as a walk on - reportedly when he came up to bat during the try outs, he was instructed to lay down controlled hits and bunts - he became impatient with the process and, against the coaches instructions, swung away on one of the pitches...and was immediately dismissed from the try outs. He served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII, eventually transitioning into the Air Force and retiring from the military in 1975 with 35 years of service. He met and married Rosetta M. Whipple on September 18, 1948 while stationed at Holloman AFB in Roswell, NM. Shortly after the birth of their first son in 1949, he left the Air Force for a time and he and Rosetta relocated to Albuquerque. He remained in Albuquerque for the next 52 years. He actually enjoyed painting houses and did that for a few years after retiring from the service. His stated "hours of work" rule was - paint no more than 6 hours a day; never more than 2 days in a row; and no more than 4 days a week - if you could live with that, he might fit you in. Fly fishing became a passion mid life & he spent hours at Charlie T's catching, cleaning & giving away the trout and bass that he caught. He had a long standing love of gambling - horses and casinos - more than a little skill at poker in his younger years - in later years in NM he was famous for quick trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin, NV - and during the Bainbridge Island years it was the Suquamish casino where he routinely checked in to play the slots. He was the ultimate minimalist - felt that anything over a couple pairs of pants and a few shirts in the closet was excessive. In 2003, having lost Rosetta in 1982, he moved to Bainbridge Island, Washington, to be close to his son Jon and family. Soon after arrival in Bainbridge Island, he took up residence at the Wyatt House Retirement Center where he made good friends and was well loved. During his last few days his children and grandchildren were able to visit and bid him farewell. His memory and legacy will long be treasured by all who knew him. He is survived by two sons - Joseph married to Stacy with children Deborah, Donna, Courtney, Christopher, Adam, Heidi, Gretchen, & Nathaniel, and grandchildren Austin, Ashley & Jeffrey: and Jonathan with children Matthew and Kathryn. His wife, Rosetta and one grandchild, Courtney, preceded him in death. Interment will take place at 11a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
