Obituary for ATKIN

Martin Atkin, 86, Captain USAF Retired, a resident of Albuquerque since 1960 passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009. He was born in New York City to the late Samuel and Estelle Atkin. He enlisted in the Aviation Cadets soon after Pearl Harbor. Martin became a B-17 pilot, with the Eighth Air Force flying 25 combat missions over Europe, including two missions on D-Day. He was wounded on July 31, 1944, his final mission, and was highly decorated for valor and service. Martin married the love of his life, Phyllis in 1953 and later began their family. He was very involved with several civic activities, including the Jewish Federation, the Santa Fe Opera Guild, and a variety of charitable organizations. Martin enjoyed a successful career in Commercial Real Estate, but was happiest when surrounded by family and close friends. He is survived by his daughter, Hillary Atkin of Santa Monica, CA; sons, Gregory Atkin and wife, Kathleen of Albuquerque, and Darrell Atkin and wife, Dona of Encinitas, CA; grandchildren, Michael, David, Rebecca, Sam, Dan, and Evan Atkin. Martin was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis; granddaughter, Rachel; and sister, Frances. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009, 4:00 p.m., at Fairview Memorial Park with Rabbi Flicker.
