Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday June 21, 2009

Gail Deane (Stenger) Schleifer, 87, Gail was born August 28, 1921 in Pleasant Hope, Missouri and died June 4, 2009 at the age of 87 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Gail was raised in Kansas City, Missouri and was a graduate of East High School. She attended LaSalle University Business School for two years. She was married to the late Gene Stenger for 26 years. She was a very devoted wife and stay at home mother. She greatly enjoyed her one precious son, George Frederick Stenger, who sadly passed away at the age of 15 after a lifetime of heart problems and continuous care. Gail began her working career at Sandia National Labs in 1967 as a Computer Teletypist preparing purchase orders related to Government Contracts for the Atomic Energy Commission. She later moved to Salinas, California to be near her sister, Rosemary Montgomery, and worked as a legal secretary. After a few years of missing New Mexico, it's food and the family here, she returned to Albuquerque and worked as a secretary for the University of Albuquerque in the Nursing, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy and finally the Criminal Justice Programs. When the University of Albuquerque closed, she applied for work at the University of New Mexico Medical School. She worked her way up from Unit Secretary to Office Manager and greatly enjoyed working with all of the Staff Physicians and Resident Physicians rotating through the Dermatology Department during her 13 year tenure. Her final job was working as Personal Secretary for the Former Governor of New Mexico Dave Cargo. She greatly admired all that Cargo did to help the people of New Mexico and enjoyed contributing to his valuable work. An avid reader herself, she especially liked helping Cargo bring more libraries to the smaller communities through out the state of New Mexico. The family wishes to thank Ambercare Hospice, Dr. Ronald Sauttier, and Dr. Anna Barnett and the staff at St. John's and Canyon Transitional Rehab Center for their kind and compassionate care. Gail is preceded in death by her parents Gail and Grace Schleifer of Kansas City, Missouri; her precious son George F. Stenger of Albuquerque; her beloved sisters Rosemary Montgomery of Bakersfield, California and Fredericka Juhasz; and her ex-husband Gene Stenger of Albuquerque.
