SMITH -- Gay Nell Smith passed away June 18, 2009 at Pataskala Oaks Care Center in Pataskala, Ohio where she had been a resident for eight years. She was 98 years old. A native Virginian, she was born in Honaker, VA April 3, 1911 and spent her childhood and young adult years there. She married William McKinley Smith, a native of Morristown, TN in 1936. They resided in Kingsport,TN, in High Point, NC, and Baltimore, MD before settling in Galion, OH in 1943. Subsequent to her divorce in 1952, she became a career employee of the Northern Ohio Telephone Company (now Verizon) in Galion. She retired and moved to the Columbus, OH area in 1971 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was an amateur artist and produced several paintings in oil, some of which she sold, and she was active in various clubs during her retirement years. Service to her Lord and Savior was always a priority in her life. As a member of East Livingston Baptist Church, she led an active religious life until becoming a fulltime resident at Pataskala Oaks Care Center in 2001. She is survived by her son, Samuel M. (Kay) Smith and by her granddaughter, Claudia (David) Donnelly, all of Albuquerque. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Schoedinger East Chapel, 5360 East Livingston Ave. in Columbus, where the Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2009. Rev. Dr. Thomas Fowler officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Galion OH. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of your choice.
