BLALOCK -- Dorothy B., 88, a resident of Silver City, entered eternal rest in Monday, June 16, 2008 at her residence. She was born on February 6, 1920 in Hartley O'Brien County, IA, to Roy Erwin and Della Lull (White) Baumann. Professor Emeritus in economics, Dorothy Blalock encouraged thousands of WON students to think and work hard during her 42-year work tenure. In 1950 she arrived in Silver City by Plymouth car to take a job at what was then NM Western College, degree in hand from the University of Minnesota, and capped her distinguished career here with a commencement address in the winter of 1992. On December 8, 1992 President of the WNMU Board of Regents, Bob Martin, conferred the degree of Doctorate of Science, honor causa, on Ms. Blalock for her contribution to WNMU and Grant County. A native of Iowa, her family moved to Minnesota where she entered the first grade. She finished school at the University of Minnesota prior to WWII. In 1942 she enlisted in the WAVES (Women Accepted For Volunteer Emergency Services) - US Naval Reserves. She served as an Aviation Mechanic's mate 1st class. She wanted to be a Yeoman, but they needed her as a mechanic. She said she was a bit disappointed women couldn't go over seas to help in the war effort, but none-the-less, Dorothy was still proud to serve her country. After leaving the Navy in 1945, Ms. Blalock went back to the University of Minnesota for more degrees. She was one of the first women to get an economics major. She completed her Master of Arts and advanced studies at Okalahoma State and Southern California. She has been the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship, and Blalock also served as a member of the State of New Mexico Council on Economic Education. In 1950, she moved to Silver City and began her career at Western. In the 42 years she taught at Western, she was also an active member of the WNMU community, she was deeply involved in the Faculty Senate, and was elected to serve as its president for several years. She was responsible for establishing WNMU's chapter of PI Gamma Mu, an international social science honor society, and was the first woman to serve on the organization's Board of Trustee's. She also served as acting Summer Session Director. She was the first professor to have an Endowed Professorship at WNMU. A long time community leader, Dorothy Bumann Blalock served the communities in Grant County through her long-term service as a member and/or serving on the board of numerous organizations working to improve the community in which she choose to live, including service as a founding board member of Prospectors, the Silver City Grant County Economic Development Corporation (SIGRED), Border Area Mental Health, Community Concert, and the Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce, where she was a prime mover and shaker. She helped start the above mentioned organizations, as well as the Art Council, she helped reactivate the Community Concert series in the 60's and was instrumental in the acquisition of the grand piano for the Fine Arts Auditorium. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, and has served on the church building and grounds committee, besides the vestry. Ms. Blalock served as the chair of the Retiree ("Sunshine") Committee for SIGRED from 1982 until she originated the idea to have "SilverFest" a celebration of retirees and volunteers in Grant County. She served as chair of SilverFest from 1988 to 1996 when the Chamber took over the event. When she was 42, as a grandmother with a sophomore in college, she decided to learn the game of golf, but she broke her shoulder which limited her ability to play. Instead, she traveled to Europe several times, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Hawaii, Alaska, and Hong Hong. She and her friend, Elsa Valverde, toured Germany, France, and England in the summer of 2007. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Strange and her husband Donald from Tucson, Arizona; one brother, Roy Bumann and wife Bernice from Barnum, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Christopher Strange and wife Cruz from Tucson, Arizona; Lonnie Strange and wife Vera from Duncan, Oklahoma; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. KEITH -- Diana Crawford Keith, 53, is now shining with radiant splendor in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Diana died at her Vista San Juan Estates home on June 14, 2008 after a long battle with Wegener's granulomatosis which precipitated her Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She was born in Farmington, NM, on September 30, 1954 to her parents, Carroll and Bonnie Crawford. Her fondest memories were of her grandparents' apple orchard and vegetable gardens located between Bloomfield and Farmington. She always wanted to get back to where the earth was rich and could grow anything. Diana graduated as valedictorian from Bloomfield High School in 1972 and was one of the Bloomfield Choir Members selected to attend and sing at the opening of the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Other high school activities and honors awarded to Diana include being a member and accompanist of the Messenger choir, treasurer of the Student Council, member of the Stage Band, being selected as a Senior Girl Stater, a Teen Times reporter, DAR award recipient, and a member of the National Honor Society. Diana later earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Texas at El Paso in Music and Education. While at UTEP she performed in many operas including the title role of Baby Doe in "The Ballad of Baby Doe" and the lead in "The Old Maid and the Thief." In addition to her opera roles, Diana presented many recitals, one of which included the world premier performance of "The Harp and the Wind." After graduating, she taught music in the public schools in El Paso, TX, Oklahoma City, OK and Bloomfield, NM. Diana was also a beloved music teacher of private voice and piano in all the afore-mentioned cities. During her lifetime of teaching music she touched and enriched the lives of thousands of students both young and old. She had a wonderful gift to teach music with love, compassion, and inspiration. Diana married Christopher Hatch in El Paso, TX in 1976 and had two children, Kirsten Yvonne Hatch and Ryan Christopher Hatch. Chris and Diana were married for five and a half years and then divorced. Diana remarried in 1983 to Bob Keith in El Paso, TX, and remained married for over 25 years until her death. Diana loved the Lord, and from the age of nine, spent countless hours playing piano as the church pianist she and her family attended. She also composed and produced sacred music in her studio. Many of her students had the privilege of singing them in their recitals. When Diana moved from Farmington, NM, to Albuquerque, NM, several of her students made the long trek from Farmington to Albuquerque to retain her as their teacher. Diana Crawford is survived by her husband, Bob Keith; her parents, Carroll and Bonnie Crawford; her grandmother, Dyvena Crawford; her sister, Becky Crawford and husband Lauren; and her brother, Scott Crawford, all of Farmington, NM. She is also survived by her two children, daughter, Kirsten Lofton and husband, Ricky and their son, Noah of El Paso, TX, and son Ryan Hatch of Albuquerque, NM. A special thanks to the First United Methodist Church Music Ministry for all of their love and support during this time. The cards and gifts were cherished. There will be a public Memorial Service at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 211 W. 20th St., Farmington, NM, on July 12, 2008 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Diana requested that donations be made in her name to the Vasculitis Foundation, www.vasculitisfoundation.org, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, www.leukemia.org. SWEARINGEN -- Addie Peed Swearingen, 104, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of the Farwell Convalescence Center in Farwell, TX. Mrs. Swearingen was born on May 25, 1904, in Leon County, TX, to Oscar and Mary Peed. The family traveled from East Texas to the Elida community by train in 1909, and young Addie attended several rural schools before completing her high school education in Elida. While still in her teens, Mrs. Swearingen moved to Roswell to attend beauty school and lived in Denver and Tucumcari for short periods of time. She lived in Santa Fe for 28 years, and was a beautician for 13 years at the beauty shop in the famed La Fonda Hotel. Mrs. Swearingen returned to Elida in 1960 and lived with her mother until the family ranch was sold in 1979. Addie then moved to Portales where she would remain for the rest of her life. After moving to Portales, Mrs. Swearingen became an avid traveler, taking trips to such places as Panama, the Caribbean, New Orleans, San Francisco, and her favorite-the Holy Land. Addie became a Christian at an early age and continued her strong Christian faith throughout her life. She was a long-time member of Portales' First Baptist Church and was very generous in her contributions to the church. Mrs. Swearingen and her husband "Hub" became wealthy through purchasing land and mineral rights, mostly in Eddy County. When oil and gas deposits were discovered on the land, income from the these rights provided money for Mrs. Swearingen to become one of the leading philanthropists in eastern New Mexico. She was generous to both friends and strangers, and many people and organizations benefited from her generosity. Mrs. Swearingen was a great friend to Eastern New Mexico University. She endowed many scholarships to support students in nursing, the fine arts, accounting and other academic programs. Mrs. Swearingen also donated funds for the University's pipe organ and loaned much of her extensive art collection to ENMU for display. To honor her generosity, she received the ENMU Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award in 1983 and was recognized as the ENMU Foundation's Philanthropist of the Year in 2002. In addition to her support of Eastern New Mexico University's students, Mrs. Swearingen contributed the first scholarship awarded to a female cadet at New Mexico Military Institute and donated considerable funds to support the music program at Lubbock Christian University. Addie was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; and husband, William "Hub" Swearingen, who died in 1975. She is survived by her cousin, Esther Luna, of New Jersey; and by her great friend and caregiver of 30 years, Mrs. Mary Mixon Mendoza of Portales.
