BASSETT -- Carl Martin Bassett, 81, a lifelong resident of Edgewood, passed away on January 30, 2005, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine; a daughter, Frances Bassett of Albuquerque; sons, Eugene, John, Kenneth, and Bill, together with his wife, Julie Bassett, all of Edgewood; granddaughters, Megan Kulju, Natasha Romero, Amanda, Kelly, and Olivia Bassett; grandson, William Bassett; and great-grandchildren, Jason and Makenna Kulju. Carl is also survived by two sisters, Linnie Faye Mallot of San Dimas, CA, and Eunice King of Amarillo, TX; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Carl was preceded in death by his eldest son, Jimmy, who died on January 5, 2005. Carl was born September 22, 1923, to William Oscar and Clara May Bassett, on his family's homestead in Venus, NM, near present-day Edgewood. Carl graduated from Moriarty High School in 1942, and was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the fabled USS Mullany during World War II. After the war, Carl returned to Edgewood. He married Josephine Hoeffner of Montgomery, NY, on January 1, 1952, and together he and Josephine farmed, ranched, raised their family, and were very active in the civic life of Edgewood and the tri-county East Mountain area. Carl was a 30-year member of the Edgewood Soil and Water Conservation Board; he was a charter member of the Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department, and he belonged to the American Legion Post #74 in Moriarty and the Edgewood Senior Citizens. Carl and Josephine donated the land where the Edgewood Fire Department and Community Building are located. Carl loved politics and served for many years as the Democrat Party precinct chairman in Edgewood, and also served for a time on the party's state Central Committee. Carl was an enrolled member of the Cherokee Indian Nation, through his mother, Clara May Martin, of Pryor, OK. Carl's family and numerous friends will sorely miss his open and generous spirit, his wry wit and his dependable good humor. The Bassett family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Albuquerque Veterans Hospital who assisted Carl in the final months of his life, and they particularly wish to thank Carl's physical therapist at the hospital, Eddie Segears. BOLTON -- Mark David Bolton, 48, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, died Friday, January 28, 2005. He is survived by his son, Michael David Bolton; daughters, Mandy Diane Bolton and Melanie Danielle Bolton; granddaughter, Ciera Margaret Felts; sister, Trudy Bell and husband, Rod; brother, Dewey Bolton and father, Manuel D. Bolton. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Brock. Mark, a graduate of Eldorado High School in 1974, was a plumbing contractor and owner of Bolton Mechanical for many years. BRYANT -- Col. Raymond S. Bryant, USA (Ret.), 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1974, died Monday, January 31, 2005. He was a former resident of Belen from 1941 to 1974. He is survived by wife, Carmen A. Bryant; daughters, Virginia Morgan and Jane Thomas; stepsons, Jerry Rice and wife, Cheryl and Gene Rice and wife, Ruth; stepdaughters, Mary Johnson and husband, Bill, and Ruth Saavedra and husband, Joe; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Bryant, Frank Bryant, and Eldon Bryant; sisters, Ruth Bradley, Zula Carrell, Ella Bryant, and Betty Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hessie Bryant; brothers, Dawson Bryant and Joe Bryant. Mr. Bryant worked for AT&SF Railroad for 37 years in the mechanical department at Belen, retiring as car inspector in 1978. He served in the US Army for 34 years being enlisted, commissioned, active duty and reserve status, with service in Europe in WWII, retiring as Colonel in AUS Reserve in 1978. He was Past Master of Bethlehem Lodge #56, AF&AM; Past Patron of Jessamine Chapter #45, O.E.S.; Awarded Rainbow Grand Cross of Colors in 1963; and took Scottish Rite degrees in 1965. Mr. Bryant had paid up life membership in Reserve Officers Association and American Legion Post #49. Member AARP and Transportation Communications Union. CASHION -- Ruby Elizabeth Cashion, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died Saturday, January 29, 2005. She is survived by her sons, Patrick Cashion of Albuquerque and Michael Cashion and wife, Kathleen West of Tijeras, NM; and sisters, Laura Roche of Tucson, AZ and Devaun Allen of Canutillo, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oran Cashion; parents, Charles Taylor Dale and Bessie Eugenia Dale; and sister, Gladys Diebels. Mrs. Cashion was a lifelong native of New Mexico. She grew up on a homesteaded ranch in Lincoln County. Mrs. Cashion was a member of Eastern Star, Ruidoso Chapter, for over 50 years. DOMINGUEZ -- Deborah Lynn Dominguez died on February 1, 2005. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 312 Unser, Rio Rancho. Deborah is survived by her husband of 28 years, Lee Robert Dominguez; mother, Martha Fernow; sister, Linda Sumski and her husband, Terry; brothers, Charles, Douglas, and Thomas Fernow; in-laws, Thomas and Zelma Dominguez. Deborah served as a mother to many of the children in the neighborhood. They include Nathan and Brian Larason, Stephanie Balmer, Laurel and Jack Britt. FAGAN -- Vera Mae Fagan, a resident of Belen, passed away peacefully February 1, 2005. She was born April 24, 1926 in Wellington, KS to Alvin and Ellen Croan. As a young girl of eighteen she ventured west to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. Vera loved her job and loved the railroad. She met and married her husband of 53 years, Harry "Fuzzy" Fagan, in Belen, where they lived throughout their life together. They had two children, Laurance Neill and Nannette Marie. Vera was active in her community; she was a member of the Catholic Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and her beloved Birthday Girls. Vera is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister, and her husband, Fuzzy. She is survived by her children, Larry Fagan, of San Antonio; daughter, Nan Lane and her husband, Terry of Abeytas; two granddaughters, Macky Fagan-Padilla and husband, Frankie of Los Lunas, Petra Fagan-Kehler of Lemitar; five great-grandchildren, Sterling and Lucas Padilla, Bryan Fagan, Jacob and Jordan Kehler; a special daughter-in-law, Mary Fagan of Lemitar. Her caring spirit will be greatly missed. FLEMING -- Gloria C. Fleming, 78, was called home by the Lord on January 29, 2005 to join her beloved husband, George. She missed him so much that she did not want to stay here without him. So, the Lord sent George to take her by the hand, and he led her through the Gate to Heaven. Both are now free from pain and together in joy forever. She was born October 15, 1926 in Woonsocket, RI and a retiree of A.T. Cross Company. Gloria is survived by her children, Ronald and Suzanne; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Stella Whitehouse. Mass of Celebration is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2005 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery and Mausoleum followed by private Inurnment. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be designated to the charity of one's choice. We would like to extend a very special thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Manor Care Camino Vista who cared for Mom during her brief stay. GEALY -- Joanne Patricia Gealy, 77, a resident of Albuquerque, died peacefully in her home on Friday, January 7, 2005. She was born on Saturday, October 29, 1927, in Chicago, IL. Joanne is survived by her cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, H. Peter and Myrtle Gealy. Joanne graduated from Muldon High School in Rockford, IL in 1945, received her B.A. from Sienna Heights College in Adrian, MI in 1949, and her Master's Degree from the School of Social Service Administration of the University of Chicago, in 1961. She worked in Chicago as a Psychiatric Social Worker before moving to Albuquerque in the mid 1960s. Joanne was employed by Bernalillo County for many years as a Social Worker. She was very proud of her Welsh Heritage and was a former member of both the Welsh Society of Albuquerque, and the National Association of Social Workers. Joanne was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, an avid reader, gardener, and a gourmet cook. She will be deeply missed by her friends. HERRERA -- Mike "Mountain" A. Herrera Sr., age 47, of Hatch, NM entered eternal life Monday, January 31, 2005 at his home in Albuquerque, NM. He was born October 25, 1957 in Los Angeles, CA to Michael and Nellie Herrera. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his mother, Nellie Herrera; his three daughters, Elizabeth Herrera, Darlene Reyna of Las Cruces, and Dora Castillo of Hatch; and three sons, Michael, Chris, and Carlos and wife, Veronica of Las Cruces. Other survivors include six grandchildren, Tony and Arlene Castillo, Matthew Herrera and Stephanie, Dominique and Alexis Reyna; two brothers, Eddie Herrera and David Estrada of Hatch; and his girlfriend and best friend, Lisa Hardy of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins of Hatch, California, and Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Herrera; grandparents, Jacinto and Lorenza Gomez; and daughter, Arlene C. Herrera. A Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Our Lord of Mercy Catholic Church in Hatch, NM. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2005 also at Our Lord of Mercy. KELLY -- Allen Kelly, 74, passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2005. Mr. Kelly was born in Baxter Springs, KS on December 12, 1930. He served in the Navy for five years during the Korean War and then served 15 years in the Air Force which included a tour in Vietnam. He is survived by two sons, Larry Kelly and his wife, Janet, of Albuquerque, NM and Dennis Kelly of Sacramento, CA; one grandchild, Sean Kelly; and two stepchildren, Christina Giardino of Chandler, AZ and Brian Lounsbury of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by his sister, Vonda Chafins of Albuquerque, NM; and a brother, Victor Burke of San Antonio, TX; and many nieces and nephews. LOVATO -- Deacon Frank Lovato, a faithful servant to the Lord, loving husband, father, and pillar of the Duranes Community, went home to be with the Lord on February 1, 2005 after 84 years of hard work and dedication. He served two years in WWII, retired from Sears after 27 years of service, and served as a deacon for 25 years. He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Gilbert. He is survived by his loving wife, Dolores; sons, Elmer and wife, Charlotte, Xavier and wife, Bella, and Wilfred and wife, Yvonne; daughters, Merencia and husband, James, Jacqui and husband, Mike, and Lourdes and husband, Tim; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by Ray Maestas and Lawrence Valencia whom he lovingly considered his sons and his brothers, Don Lovato and wife Celena and Rey Lovato. Deacon Frank Lovato will be deeply missed by all. Visitations will be held on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. MAES -- RICHARD CARLOS MAES, age 55, of Santa Fe, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Maes, Mr. and Mrs., George Marquez; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rodarte, Lorenzo Marquez, Ernie Marquez, Frank Maes, Gilbert and Frances Maes, Isabel Maes, Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Maes and Billy Maes. Richard was born May 24, 1949 in Las Vegas, NM, the loving son of Carlos and Rachel Maes. He graduated from St. Michael's High School and Highlands University. He served in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy as a Frogman. He was also a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be donated to the P.M.S. MCKINLEY -- Valerie J. McKinley April 4, 1937 - January 29, 2005 Angel Fire resident, Valerie McKinley, died peacefully early Saturday morning January 29, 2005 after 6 months of living through cancer. Valerie and her husband, Warren, built their home in Angel Fire in 1999 and moved there full time in 2002 from Albuquerque. Valerie and Warren had been married only 7 years before moving to Angel Fire. Valerie moved to Albuquerque from New Jersey in 1958, with a short stay in Tennessee in the early 1980s. She held a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Counseling, and retired from a fifteen-year career as a counselor in the Albuquerque Public Schools in 1999. Valerie was patient, unselfish, spiritual, and a loving friend to all who ever met her. She was an accomplished artist and loved painting. Her great passions in life were her husband, children, family, and especially her grandchildren. She had been involved in the United Church of Angel Fire, Church Bible Study, Garden Club, and the Library. Valerie is preceded in death by her first husband, Stuart Asselin of Albuquerque; and her parents, Charles Auer and Helen Reich Auer. She is survived by her husband; sister, Nancy Hrabal; brother, Larry Auer; sons, Stu Asselin, David Asselin, Timothy Asselin, Matthew McKinley; and daughter, Mary Mckinley Robinson; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. MICHAEL -- Helen Terry. Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Helen Terry Michael, 81, died the morning of Friday, January 28, 2005, following a lengthy illness. Helen is survived by her daughter, Erin M. Ruscetti and husband, Joey; granddaughters, Megan C. Chavez, Morgan C. Chavez; sister, Kathaleen Previti; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Michael. Helen spent the majority of her life in Albuquerque where she assisted in the operation of the family owned business, Michael's Bar and Lounge, on Menaul. In addition, she worked for Southern Union Gas Company, Broadway Southwest, and Maloof Industries. Helen was instrumental in the fund-raising efforts for the March of Dimes in the 1960s and the organization of the twenty-fifth and fortieth year reunions for the Albuquerque High School class of 1942. She was also a volunteer for a number of years at Our Lady of Annunciation School. A Memorial Rosary Service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005, 4:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Chapel. MURRAY -- Kathleen Ann "Kay" Murray, 61, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend went home to the Lord on Monday, January 31, 2005 after a long struggle with lung disease. Kay is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Bill; children, Brenda Kay Akin and husband, Steve, Sean Murray, Cristie Murray, Melanie Murray, Kimberly Murray, Lance Murray, and Casey Murray, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kyle and Kelley Murray, Stephen and Kaylin Ann Akin, John, Mason, and Jake Murray, Dillon, Donovan Murray, and Kristopher Rayner Jr.; brothers, Ricky Price of Albuquerque and Kevin Helmick of Belen; friend and caretaker, Leni Logan; and many other loved ones and friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, Josephine Price and her son, Randy Murray. Kay's occupation in life was being the "World's Greatest Mom." She was involved in all of her children's activities throughout her life. She was the Room Mother in elementary school, the Girl Scout leader, the Team Mother and most of all her kids' biggest fan and supporter. Her true joy in life was being a Mother and Grandmother. Cremation has taken place and a family service will be held at a later date. NEWLEN -- Edna "Lucille" Newlen, 80, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, January 28, 2005. Lucille was a very active member of Isleta Senior Center. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Lenz of Virgina, Cathy Wineberg and husband Allen of Washington; two sons, Stan Newlen of Albuquerque and William Gemas of Texas; one sister, Ruth Cunningham of Albuquerque; six grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. PLATH -- Victor J. Plath passed away in his sleep on Sunday, January 30, 2005, after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born on Sunday, January 1, 1922 in Davenport, IA, the only child of Emma E. Theidermann-Plath, homemaker, and Victor Plath, and independent grocer. He is survived by his wife of five and a half years, Marianne Newman Plath; his five children and their families: "Budgie" Plath and wife, Debbie, of Granby, MA, Vincent Plath and wife, Judy, of Fairborn, OH, Phillip Plath of Albuquerque, Barbara Plath of Santa Rosa, CA, and Laura Anne Plath of Lakeport, CA; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Victor was an avid aviator with a lifelong hobby of making and flying remote control airplanes. He earned his first pilot's license at the age of 19. Victor married Irene Mozelle Gatlin in 1943. He served in the USAF for 23 years, during which time he served as a flight instructor, ferried planes, and flew cargo in various parts of the world. He spent his last 6 years of service at Manzano Base in NM. After retiring from the Air Force, he and his family spent 2 years in Dallas, TX and 1 year in Santa Fe, NM and then resettled in Albuquerque. He was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, was a gifted woodworker, and worked for Hancock Mutual Funds, Terra Corp. among others. As a widower in 1998, Vic married Marianne Newman, who has lovingly and devotedly cared for him during his illness which was diagnosed in 2000. His bright smile and twinkling eyes will always be remember. SMITH -- Virginia E. Smith (Virgie), 80, was born on May 12, 1924 in Ralls, TX to James Walter Hunton and Mary Eleanor (Driscoll) Hunton. She was born into a farming family and spent her younger days on farms in places like Ralls, TX, Claunch, and Socorro NM. She was preceded in death by Carl A. Smith, her husband of 38 years. She leaves to mourn, her sons, Carl E. Smith and wife, Sandy, Leon Smith and wife, Sharren, Jimmy Smith; her daughter, Vera Smith and husband, Allan; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. STARKEY -- Richard R. Starkey 1926-2005 Richard R. "Dick" Starkey, 78, of St. Joseph, MO, died Tuesday February 1, 2005 at his residence. Born February 10, 1926 in Lincoln, NE, he lived most of his life in St. Joseph. He married Joann Wedgewood, who preceded him in death. Mr. Starkey retired as an over the road truck driver after fifty years, retiring from McLean Trucking. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lola (Janseen) Starkey, and two brothers, Robert and Russell Starkey. Survivors include his children, Sherry Owens and Cathy Steeby, both of St. Joseph, Cindy Jones, of Stewartsville, MO, Robin Snead, Roger, and Rick Starkey, all of Albuquerque, NM, and their spouses; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. VEGA -- Alice Vega, a longtime resident of Socorro, NM, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. Alice was 55 years old and is survived by her husband of 37 years, Lupe Vega of Socorro and Taos; her son, Louis Vega of Washington, DC; and her sisters, Celina Baca of Socorro, Rita G. Steinnerd of Lemitar, Bernadette Griego-Howell of Las Cruces, and Emma Griego of Lemitar; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was born on February 21, 1949, in Lemitar, NM, to Tomas and Martha S. Griego and was a loving, brave, honest, passionate, supportive and beautiful wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her energy and positive outlook on life inspired all to give their best and to have faith in and for themselves. Sincere gratitude is extended to her friends, family and her community for their years of loving support and prayer. WYLIE -- Virginia "Gina" Wylie, 89, born in 1915 in Gallup, NM, died Monday January 31, 2005 in Albuquerque. She is survived by son, Claude Wylie and wife, Julie; son, Alan Wylie and wife, Marion; daughter, Nancy Banes and husband, Tom; son, Ken Wylie and wife, Barbara, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Karen Wylie, Tracey Wylie, Ginger Moore, George Wylie, Stacey Banes, Brandon Banes, Matthew Wylie, Nathan Wylie, Brent Wylie, and Ryan Wylie; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Wylie, Sr. in 1980. Mrs. Wylie was a founding member of the Four Hills Country Club. She was a member of the Women's Golf Association of the Four Hills and Albuquerque Country Clubs. She will be endlessly missed as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
