Black -- Carl L. Black Jr., 68, passed away February 17, 1999. Carl was preceded in death by wife, Jayne and is survived by seven children, Lola Jane Ulrich, John M.H. Ulrich, IV, Carl Lee Black III (Trey), Pamela Francis, B. Ellis French, Carla Jayne McCown and William Carl Lee Black (Bill). He is also survived by many loving grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law, and friends. Carl was a retiree of C.S.R. Crego. He was loved and will be missed by all of his brothers and sisters in Christ.

Cordova -- Eddie Cordova, 72, a resident of Mora, NM, passed away on February 17, 1999, following a lengthy illness. He was born August 18, 1927 in Holman, NM, son of Felipe and Trinidad Cordova. He was a member of St. Gertrude Church in Mora. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felipe and Trinidad Cordova; also three brothers, Reynaldo, Jose, Cayetano Cordova. He is survived by Rose Cordova; two daughters, Joyce and husband, Felix Vigil of Albuquerque, Paula and husband, Albert Quintana of Denver, CO; seven sons, Trinnie Cordova and wife, Ruby from Mora, Ray Cordova from Albuquerque, Melvin Cordova and wife, Carmen from Mora, Ronnie from Mora, Martin Cordova from Albuquerque, Anthony Cordova from Albuquerque, Carlos Cordova from Albuquerque. He had 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He has two brothers, Gilbert Cordova and wife, Betty from Albuquerque, Manuel Cordova from Mora; four sisters, Dolores Casados and husband, Louis from Cleveland, NM, Isabel Duran from Rainsville, Donnie Gandert and husband, William from Mora, Arcelia Melendez and husband, Frank from Albuquerque. He also has many friends, nephews, nieces and relatives. Pallbearers will be Trinnie, Melvin, Ronnie, Ray, Martin, Anthony. Services will be held Saturday, February 20, 7:00 p.m., at St. Therese Church in Albuquerque. There will be a Rosary recited on Sunday, February 21, 7:00 p.m., at St. Gertrude's Church in Mora. Dean -- Clarence Kenneth (Kenny) Dean, age 37, passed away on February 13, 1999. Kenny was a resident of Espanola prior to moving to Los Lunas two years ago. He is survived by his son, Daniel of Espanola; his brothers, Wayne and Donny of Lees Summit, MO; maternal grandparents, Clarence and Nettie Dean of Los Lunas; uncles, Curtis and wife, Nancy of Arroyo Seco, Clinton (Willie) and Randy of Los Lunas; aunt, Donna Belle of Springfield, MO; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Dean Snider; and brother, Ray Dean. He worked as a plumber prior to his death. Deme -- John Deme, born in New York in 1914, married in Massachusetts to Hazel Reilly in 1937, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; sons, J. Howard Deme and wife, Carol Lynn and Alan Deme; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, all residents of Albuquerque. John was educated in primary schools in Connecticut. He attended Newark College of Engineering and City College in New York, taking special courses allied to communications. He received private tutelage from Professor Howard B. Shultz at Yale. John's chosen lifelong career in broadcasting led to operating, managing and owning radio stations throughout several states on the east coast. He worked in close co-operation with Major Armstrong, pioneering FM radio. In the early days of television, John worked at the Allen B. DuMont TV Station WABD and CBS Labs in New York. In 1953, he received the B'nai B'rith Outstanding American Citizenship Award. In 1954, he received the American Legion Distinguished Service Award. He served as President of the Norwich Exchange Club in 1953, he lectured a ten-week course on radio and television for Willimantic State Teachers College. From 1958-1963, John established and operated WINF Radio in Manchester, CT. The opportunity to own a TV station motivated him to move with his family to Carlsbad, NM, where he purchased and operated KAVE TV, Channel 6 from 1963-1966. Thirty-one years ago, again a pioneer, John launched KZIA AM/FM, giving Albuquerque its first radio station with an all talk format, one of only three in the country at that time, a leader in its day. Cremation has taken place and a reception will be held Saturday, February 20, 1999, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.

Garcia -- Helen T. Garcia, 76, a resident of Belen, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at her daughter's home in Bosque Farms. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Helen was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Monica Barela in 1997. She is survived by her ten children, Odilia Pacheco and her husband, Leroy, Lorraine Romero and her husband, Gilbert, Corrine Garcia, Linda Cordova and her husband, Salomon, Pearl Gabaldon, Priscilla Barela and her husband, Telesfor, Margaret Garcia and her husband, Pat, Geraldine Stanford and her husband, Dale, Tommy Garcia, Mary Cordova and her husband, Robert; 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sally Sanchez, Emily Chavez, Dorothy Romero, Esperanza Galvan, and Reyna Galindo. Garcia -- Mr. Joe R. Garcia, 78, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on February 17, 1999. Mr. Garcia is the beloved husband of 58 years to Mrs. Faye Garcia. He is also survived by two daughters, Gloria Yarbrough and husband, Warren and Stella Garcia and fiance, Jim Beebe; four sons, Ralph J. Garcia Jr., and wife, Lucille, Ted W. Garcia and wife, Estella, Ron Garcia and Jimmy P. Garcia; two brothers, Leonard Garcia and Isaac Garcia; 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Juan and Mary Garcia and a son, John"Sonny". Mr. Garcia was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Westside Four Square Church. Higgins -- Patricia Dell Higgins, age 38, a native of Albuquerque, passed away in Tulsa, OK on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 after a brief illness. She is survived by her parents, Louis and Patricia Higgins of Albuquerque; brother, Louis Higgins IV of Albuquerque; sister, Carol Dyer of Clovis, CA; nieces, Amanda, Emily, Mattie, and Tiffany; grandparents, Barney and Virginia Gardner and Catherine Higgins; and many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of Albuquerque. Patricia graduated in 1978 from Berkner High School in Richardson, TX. She completed two years of study at the Dallas County Junior College System. Hoover -- Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John J. Hoover, 69, passed into eternal life and into the arms of Jesus Christ on February 17, 1999. John had been a resident of the Albuquerque and Bosque Farms area for over 22 years. He is survived by his wife, Oleta of 48 years. Also four children, Lisa Pruitt and her husband, Tim, Sheila Hoover, Darryl Hoover and Pam Puryear and her husband, Rich. John leaves behind his granddaughter, Tammy Brewer and her husband, Phillip; and grandson, Johnathan Pruitt. Mr. Hoover is survived by nine brothers and sisters; three step-brothers and sisters; and many friends. He had retired from the Albuquerque Underground Co., where he worked as a construction superintendent. Hoyt -- Donald Earl Hoyt passed away in the morning of February 12, 1999. He was born in Rochester, New York on August 30, 1931. Don graduated from Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio, specializing in the classic language of old German. Don spent most his adult working life in front of a microphone as a disc jockey for classical music, first in Chicago, and then for 16 years with KNME in Albuquerque. He was a widely heard, respected authority. Don loved music and was a powerful baritone. His singing in the choir of The Cathedral of St. John, in Albuquerque, and in other venues gave many people great pleasure. Don said that he felt satisfied with his past achievements and especially the growing closeness with his family. He is survived by his two daughters, Lucy Richardson of Nacogdoches, TX and Ingrid Krajicek of New Paltz, NY; and his friend, Ronee Henson. Thank you, Don, for your gifts and your wonderful wit. Johnson -- D.R."Red" Johnson, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1920, passed away quietly in his sleep early in the morning of Sunday, February 14, 1999. Red came to New Mexico in 1920 from Louisville, KY with his parents, Frederick Edgar Johnson and Theodosia Pearl, his sister and three brothers. Red went to work for Bill Cutter at Cutter Airfield, now the Albuquerque Sunport, during the early days of pioneer aviation. He organized the first Glider Club in New Mexico. At the age of 17, he moved on to work for Hutchinson Fruit Company. It was on a trip through Mountainair that he spotted the love of his life, Dorothy Maxwell. They were married in 1934, and"the man who made her laugh" brought the little farm girl to the city. Not long after they married, Red came down with tuberculosis. Red was one of the early TB patients treated by surgery to remove the dread lung disease and his surgery was successful. He chose the field of Advertising Specialty Sales, and became the local expert on calendars, pens, pencils, and such. Red lost Dorothy to ovarian cancer in 1989, 55 years after she first came into his life. Red began to struggle with life on his own after symptoms of Alzheimers began to surface several years ago. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Wolfe and husband, Morris of Las Cruces and Judy Bell and husband, Carl of San Diego, CA; granddaughters, Kimberly Jackson, Alexandra Bell, and Kristen Bell; and great-granddaughter, Taylor Campbell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Opal Charlotte Johnson; brothers, Quinton Edgar, Albuquerque Police Department Retired Deputy Chief M. Fred Johnson, and retired Albuquerque Bus Driver Harry LeeRoy Johnson. Services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE with Rev. Mike Mullen officiating. A eulogy will be delivered by Rev. T.H. Chapman of Midland, TX. Lohbeck -- Don Lohbeck passed away February 16, 1999 after a lengthy illness. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, August 20, 1917. Lohbeck rose to reknown as a concert pianist in the United States and Europe until World War II interrupted his career. He moved to Santa Fe, NM in 1954. He wrote the biography of Patrick J. Hurley in 1956. In this book he disclosed publicly for the first time the details of the then-secret Yalta Agreement on China made by Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill. He later became a pioneer in uranium and thorium mining and other aspects of nuclear energy development. He was a pioneer in importing gas centrifuge technology to the United States. In 1958 Governor John Burroughs appointed Lohbeck to be the first Chairman of the New Mexico Atomic Energy Commission. He was an entrepreneur who started and operated several businesses. Son, Kurt and wife, Barbara; daughter, Michelle Britta and her husband, Paul survive him. Also grandsons, Robert, Roland and Roger Lohbeck, David Watland; and great-granddaughter, Ariana Lohbeck; as well as sisters, Ruth Cashion, Jeanne Riechele and brother, Alvin of St. Louis, MO. Romero -- Manuel"Indio" Romero Sr., 64, beloved and devoted father, grandfather and brother, was called home to be with the Lord, February 16, 1999. He was born May 23, 1934 in Los Lunas, NM. Mr. Romero was preceded in death by his parents, Doroteo and Senida Romero; and a son, Ricardo Romero. He is survived by two sons, Manuel Romero Jr. and wife, Kathleen, Henry Romero and wife, Tina; two step-sons, David Gallegos and Herman Gallegos, all of Albuquerque; four daughters, Maria Soila Herrera and husband, Miguel of Albuquerque, Patricia Estrada and husband, Ruben of Long Beach, CA, Yolanda Solano and husband, Skip of Rio Rancho, Connie Barraza and husband, Gabriel; two step-daughters, Margaret Gallegos, Lucille Montano and husband, Louis, all of Albuquerque; 12 grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Grace Ulibarri and husband, Jose, Josie Marquez and husband, Victorio, Betty Aritaga and Carmen Najera and husband, Jessie; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Schulz -- Hollis H. Schulz, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Mary P. (Ship) Schulz of the family home; daughters, Susanne Rex and husband, Leroy of Albuquerque, Vicki S. Evans and husband, Jimmy of Tennessee and Sarah Jo Devous and husband, Mike of Dallas, TX; and grandchildren, Joanna Hendrichsen and Carrie S. Zellars, both of Albuquerque, Kathy Hawthorne of Oklahoma, Karen Hawthorne of California and Calvin Hawthorne of Roswell. Mr. Schulz was born on a ranch near Wimberly, TX on March 25, 1908. He was a graduate of The University of Texas in Austin receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1929 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1932. Mr. Schulz was a University of Texas football team manager and letterman. The team was the Southwest Conference football champions in 1928. He was active as a sports official in the Texas Relays. Mr. Schulz was a member of the Football Official's Association (S.F.O.A.). He was a physical education teacher and coach at Austin Jr. High School in Austin, TX from 1930-1932, and a physical education teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, TX from 1934-1940. Mr. Schulz married Mary P. (Ship) Fry on March 7, 1935 in Austin, TX. He was the civilian director of Physical Fitness and helped set up the S.A.A.C. Cadet Training Center from 1941-1942 and was the Army Air Corps Physical Fitness Officer at Bonham, TX, Brooks Air Field in San Antonio, TX, and Ellington Field in Houston, TX from 1943-1946. Mr. Schulz worked as the Recreation Director at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas, TX and then at the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque, beginning in 1946-1963, when he retired. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Services will be held Friday, 11:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. John Thurman and Dr. Brian E. Davis officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may view one hour prior to the service. Sewell -- Services for J.C. Sewell, 90, of Lubbock were Sunday in Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He died January 21 1999. He was born April 30, 1908 in Priscilla. He worked on a dairy farm in Dallas and he later moved to Big Spring to work in a meat market. He worked for Montgomery Ward and Co., where he moved to assistant manager. He married Vera Kay Moore on October 7, 1933. He worked for G.F. Wackers for 16 years in Wink, Kermit and Big Spring. He and his wife moved to Big Lake in 1948 and operated a store. He moved to Albuquerque, in 1958, where he was a credit and office manager for Whites Auto Store. He moved to the Bank of New Mexico in 1962 as a loan officer, and he retired in 1975 as vice-president in the corporation. He was a manager of a branch bank. He worked as a consultant for several other banks. He moved to Lubbock in 1995. He was a board chairman of several Methodist churches. He was a member of the Lions Club, Chambers of Commerce and high school athletic programs. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Carlton; a brother, Marvin Richmond Sewell; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. Sisneros -- Venessa Sisneros, age 18, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday in Texas following an auto accident. She is survived by her parents, Vivian and Maria Sisneros, Vivian Sisneros Jr. and Lupe Carrisalez; grandmother, Celia Flores; and niece, Mariah Carrisalez. Smith -- Roy E. Smith, 68, of Edgewood and a resident of the Albuquerque area since 1942, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Lucille C. Sumner -- Ruby Sumner, 66, a resident of Albuquerque for 32 years, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. Tafoya -- Adelicia"Alice" Tafoya joined her heavenly father on February 16, 1999 at the age of 83. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Aurelia Lucero; her husband, Albert Montoya and later by her husband, Nick Tafoya; two brothers; three sisters; her daughter, Lorraine; grandsons, Al and Art Santillanes. Survivors include her beloved daughters, Arlene Santillanes and husband, Louis, Lydia Gonzales and Oney Apodaca, Geri Lee and husband, Charley; her beloved son, Andy Tafoya and wife, Michelle; sister, Minda Sachs and husband, Ben; son-in-law, Fred Herrera; sisters-in-law, Eloida Lucero and Lena Lucero; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; caretaker, Ida Herrera; many nephews, nieces, and many friends. Alice was a member and past president and treasurer of the Alameda Senior Citizens Center. Tenorio -- Ruby Tenorio, 70, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 13 years, passed away on Thursday, February 18, 1999. Ruby was born July 21, 1928, the daughter of Mike and Beatrice Garcia Tenorio in Encino, New Mexico. She had been a housekeeper for the Presbyterian Hospitals before retiring. Ruby is survived by her companion and lifelong friend, Eileen Rigsby of Rio Rancho; son, Thomas Tucker and wife, Kathy of Lewisville, TX; seven sisters; two brothers; and a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 21, 1999, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln, Rio Rancho. Trujillo -- Breanna Angelina Trujillo, 2, beloved daughter and sister, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 1999. She was born August 2, 1996 in Albuquerque.
