Obituary for Schulz

Hollis H. Schulz, 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Mary P. (Ship) Schulz of the family home; daughters, Susanne Rex and husband, Leroy of Albuquerque, Vicki S. Evans and husband, Jimmy of Tennessee and Sarah Jo Devous and husband, Mike of Dallas, TX; and grandchildren, Joanna Hendrichsen and Carrie S. Zellars, both of Albuquerque, Kathy Hawthorne of Oklahoma, Karen Hawthorne of California and Calvin Hawthorne of Roswell. Mr. Schulz was born on a ranch near Wimberly, TX on March 25, 1908. He was a graduate of The University of Texas in Austin receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1929 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1932. Mr. Schulz was a University of Texas football team manager and letterman. The team was the Southwest Conference football champions in 1928. He was active as a sports official in the Texas Relays. Mr. Schulz was a member of the Football Official's Association (S.F.O.A.). He was a physical education teacher and coach at Austin Jr. High School in Austin, TX from 1930-1932, and a physical education teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, TX from 1934-1940. Mr. Schulz married Mary P. (Ship) Fry on March 7, 1935 in Austin, TX. He was the civilian director of Physical Fitness and helped set up the S.A.A.C. Cadet Training Center from 1941-1942 and was the Army Air Corps Physical Fitness Officer at Bonham, TX, Brooks Air Field in San Antonio, TX, and Ellington Field in Houston, TX from 1943-1946. Mr. Schulz worked as the Recreation Director at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas, TX and then at the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque, beginning in 1946-1963, when he retired. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Services will be held Friday, 11:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. John Thurman and Dr. Brian E. Davis officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may view one hour prior to the service.
