HUGHES, CLINTON D. Clinton D. Hughes lived most of his 84 years in New Mexico. "This is my country," he often said to describe his sense of belonging to the mountains he skied, the streams he fly-fished, and the fields where he hunted game birds. Though he retired his skis at age 75, in his dreams he never stopped taking the pitches of Longhorn, his favorite run at Taos Ski Valley. And in his last years, when he no longer walked fields to flush out quail and pheasant or the riverbanks for fish, he tied flies to lure the canniest of trout. A farm boy from Kansas, Clint Hughes became a small animal veterinarian. Married in 1952, he and his wife Jo Ellyn moved to Alamogordo in 1954, where, as a Captain in the United States Air Force, he managed the Aero Medical Field Laboratory at Holloman Air Force Base conducting studies of high speed on monkeys, pigs, and chimpanzees to prepare for man's travel to outer space. In 1956, The Journal of Aviation Medicine published his study, and not long after, he and Jo settled in Albuquerque to open his veterinary practice specializing in orthopedic surgery. For 26 years, he treated an exotic spectrum of animals from mice to lions. His favorite: sporting dogs. When he retired from animal medicine, New Mexico's higher elevations beckoned. Santa Fe became home. His academic accomplishments include a Bachelor and Master of Science and a Doctorate of Veterinary Science from Kansas State University (1953), where he was a member of Sigma Xi and Gamma Sigma Delta. He completed his residency in surgery at University of Pennsylvania (1954). Over a span of 30 years, he served as Co-Chairman of the American Association of Colleges - Kansas State University, President of Bernalillo County Veterinary Association, and Director of American Animal Hospital Association. He was a member of the New Mexico Veterinary Association, American Veterinary Radiology Society, American Veterinary Medical Association, and the Academy of Veterinary Practice. He was appointed to the Veterinary Examiners Board in 1967 and served as its president for five years. He is survived by his wife Jo; daughter Debra, her husband Gary; and grandsons Austin and Merritt. Clint was born in Mulberry, Kansas to Agnes and Lewis Larkin Hughes on January 9, 1930. On January 1, 2015, at 4:30 a.m., he died in Santa Fe after a bold struggle with Alzheimer's. The family celebrated his life in a private gathering at home. Contributions to the Clinton D. JACKSON, HELEN DORIS GRAVES Our beloved mother, teacher, sister and friend, went to rejoin her husband Raymond on the evening of January 3, 2015. She was born to Banks and Anadel Graves on September 5, 1917 at home in Somerville, Texas. She grew up there and graduated from Somerville High School. Helen headed off to the University of Texas, Austin, with the intent of going into medicine. She left UT because of a death in the family and was unable to return to college. She taught children in a one room school in Somerville from 1936 to 1937. Helen moved, with her family to Albuquerque in 1937, to the Santa Fe Railroad Tie Treatment Plant where her father became the head of the Mechanical Department. Helen started attending the University of New Mexico and while working in downtown Albuquerque, she was spotted by the man destined to become her husband and the love of her life. Helen completed her studies at UNM and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in History and Mathematics and a minor in Psychology. Her next job was office manager of a restaurant at the Albuquerque Airport where she was recruited by Trans Continental Airlines, where in the Spring of 1941 she became the first Woman Radio Operator west of the Mississippi. Her people skills and her ability to take charge came to the attention of others working at the flight control tower and she was approached by the Federal Communication Commission. Soon Helen was off for training in Fort Worth, Texas to become one of the first female Air Traffic Controllers in the Southwest. Upon completion of her training she continued to work at the Fort Worth tower. However, because of Helen's asthma, doctor's orders sent her back to Albuquerque. Once her health improved, she was assigned to Signal Corps Headquarters at Kirtland Field where she relayed coded Manhattan Project messages. Helen married Raymond C. Jackson in May of 1944 then followed him to New Orleans and Houston during World War II. They came home to Albuquerque, and in 1946 welcomed their first daughter, Patricia Ann. Maryle was born 3 years later and after a short stint in Washington, D.C. for the Korean Conflict, Helen Catherine came along. Helen was no longer employed outside the home but she was still working hard. She joined the Bandelier Elementary School PTA and eventually became president. She was active in her daughters' Girl Scout troops and was Superintendent of Children's Sunday school at Central United Methodist Church. With the girls growing up, she headed back to work outside of the home and in 1963, took a job in the Office of Admissions and Records at the University of New Mexico. During her tenure at UNM, registration went from students tramping all over campus to register for classes to computer generated punch cards in Johnson Gym. Helen excelled in tracking the statistics required by the University and it was during this time that she took on and helped to clean up what was later to be known as "Lobo-gate," becoming the champion of the disenfranchised athletes. She guided, what seemed like millions of students through the registration and graduation process, making sure they had all the necessary classes and was known to take on a few professors as well. She retired from UNM in 1983 as Associate Registrar in charge of Re-admission, Graduations, Statistics and Athletic Eligibility. Raymond spent many years as Sales Manager at the Excelsior Laundry, retired from the US Army Reserves as a Major and then, finally from the Albuquerque Public Schools as Supervisor of Purchasing, in 1985. They bought a small vacation home in Monte Vista, Colorado and over the next 25 years, spent many wonderful months overhauling the house, fishing and reading in the cool Colorado weather. In 2011 Raymond died two days after their 67th wedding anniversary and the loss broke Helen's heart. Her daughters, Patti, Maryle and Helen Catherine, stepped up and along with Martha Gonzales, Paula Holguin and Nikki Hermasillo, her wise and wonderful caregivers, were able to keep Helen in her home until her passing that Saturday night in Maryle's arms. In death, Helen Doris Graves Jackson joined her parents, her beloved husband, Raymond and their granddaughter, Helen Aubrey Miller. Left here to treasure all of the wonderful memories are her sister Beth Morgan and her daughter Susan; Helen's daughters, Patricia A. Spencer of Santa Fe, Maryle Barber of Albuquerque and Helen Catherine Miller of Roswell. Her grandchildren, who all brought her great joy, include John Hunter and his wife Laura; Truman Spencer, Elizabeth (Jenny) Barber, Amanda Kirkbride and her husband Justin; Jay and Chance Miller. Raymond and Helen were also blessed with three great-grandchildren; Sean Neuman, Madison Helene and Jackson Edgar Kirkbride. Services for Helen will take place on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 109 University NE, Albuquerque, NM and will be conducted by Rev. Jim Hawk. Ennichment will follow immediately at the Centennial Urn Garden in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception will be held for all of those that would like to share memories of Helen. Helen and Raymond were true patriots, having lived from the end of WW I through 9/11 and the present conflicts. They saw the effects that war took, physically, mentally and emotionally on the veterans and their charities of choice became the Wounded Warrior Project at PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004, in support of their grandson. Please direct any gifts and remembrances to either of these wonderful organizations. STAGNONE, JAMES J James J. Stagnone, MD passed away on January 5, 2015 at the age of 82. He was born in Lowell, MA on Sept 23, 1932, the third of five sons to parents Joseph and Helen (Finnegan) Stagnone. Jim lived most of his life in Albuquerque, NM where he practiced dermatology from 1969 to 1994. He was a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of New Mexico Medical School, where each of his four sons also graduated. He devoted his medical skills and vast experience to the teaching of medical students and residents and, upon retirement, he donated his medical building to the UNM Department of Dermatology. The James J. Stagnone MD Building is now home to the Department of Dermatology and provides clinical space for the Division of Plastic Surgery at UNM. Jim was a scholar, athlete and renaissance man and excelled at every goal he set. He was the president of his high school class, captain of his high school football team and president of his fraternity at Bowdoin, where he also played football as a pre-medical student. He went on to Yale for medical school, graduating in 1959 and later joined the United States Army for a professional career in active military service until 1969 and then continued his service in the United States Army Reserves for another ten years, where he retired as a full Colonel. Although a scholar and passionate lover of people, travel and the finer things in life, his greatest happiness came from his family and their shared love of the great outdoors. He ran numerous marathons and "collected" trophies in golf and skiing. He was a member of the Albuquerque Country Club for over 30 years where he forged countless friendships and enjoyed a wonderful celebration at the end of his medical career. Upon his retirement from his daily medical practice in 1994, he moved to his beloved Taos each winter where, as a Certified Phase II Instructor, he taught skiing for the sheer love of people, sport and the joy of giving to others. This continued until 2004 when time began to catch up and overtake his ability to conquer the mountain. During his entire time with the ski school, he continued to provide medical care free to all he could help. Once the reality of Parkinson's disease could no longer be ignored, Jim moved to Olympia, WA to be near three of his sons, David (Dave) a physician specializing in Radiology in Olympia, WA, Edward (Ted) an Engineer with Daimler in Portland, OR and James Jr. (Jay), an engineer with Hewlett Packard in White Salmon, WA. His fourth son Gregory (Greg) is a plastic surgeon in Dallas, TX. Jim was a best friend and cherished mentor to each of his sons. As one of five children, and himself having four sons of his own, his survivors include a nearly countless number of cousins, nieces, nephews and "grandpeople" but most closely include his sons Jay, Greg, Ted and Dave, daughters in law Ellen, Misty and Karen, his grandchildren Nick, Kaitlyn, Natalie, Caleigh and Caiden and his brothers Dan, Lou, Joe and Frank. Jim's family began missing him as Parkinson's disease slowly took away his participation in the life he so embraced. They now let go with love, thanks and true appreciation for the lessons in kindness, the support and the loving guidance he shared with so many in his 82 years of a life truly well lived. There will be a Celebration of Jim's life at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at FRENCH-Wyoming. Private family burial with military honors by the United States Army will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Please visit our online guestbook for James at www.FrenchFunerals.com FRENCH - Wyoming 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

WAUGH, MARY ALICE (1921-2014) Mary Alice Waugh, widow of John Waugh, daughter of Jesse and Doris Mary Gillespie, mother of Mary Ruth Waugh, and friend to many, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, December 28, 2014. She was 93. Mary Alice, known to all as MA, was born in Decatur, Illinois. Her family moved around some and eventually settled in South Pasadena, California where MA attended South Pasadena High School, class of '39. She went on to graduate from UCLA in 1943 and became an elementary school teacher. She and John Waugh married in 1946 and their daughter came along in 1955. Music was one of MA's many passions and a highlight of her life was singing with Jester Hairston, a renowned expert on African-American spirituals. In 'Lilies of the Field', Hairston wrote 'Amen' and was Sidney Poitier's singing voice in the film. As part of his role as cultural ambassador for the State Department, he had a singing group that performed in foreign countries. MA traveled to China as a member of that group. During the 1950's, the Waugh family went on many camping trips, especially in the Southwest. Mary Alice fell in love with Native American history and culture and it became her lifelong passion. When she moved to Albuquerque, NM in the early 1990's, she became a docent at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (IPCC). She pursued other volunteer activities as well and shortly after moving to New Mexico, became a member of The First Unitarian Church in Albuquerque. She continued both these volunteer activities until a diagnosis of congestive heart failure in mid-2014 forced her to slow down. A philanthropist at heart, she contributed to scores of organizations including IPCC, her Church, the Museum of the American Indian, The Smithsonian, and more. With groups like the Animal Humane Society she didn't just contribute financially-she was completely devoted to her own feline companions. An avid book lover, Mary Alice read widely in various genres and belonged to a mystery book club for years. She will be remembered for many things but perhaps most of all for her loving attention to her daughter, Mary Ruth, her generous spirit, her open heart, her delightful giggle, her insatiable curiosity, and the wide circle of friendship which surrounded her. Services will be held on January 24 at the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque, 3701 Carlisle Blvd. NE at 5 pm. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, her estate asks that donations be made to either the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center or The First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque.
