COOPER -- William Robert "Bill" "Coop" Cooper, 79, passed away peacefully at his home on January 3, 2006. Bill was born in Toronto, Kansas on May 26, 1926. In 1952, while moving his family from Kansas to California, his infant son, Kevin, fell sick and had to be hospitalized in Albuquerque. To provide for his family during their stay in New Mexico, Bill took a temporary job at American Furniture. By mistake, on his first day of work he reported to the carpet department rather than the warehouse. Bill told his first customer that the roll of carpet she was purchasing was the best he had ever seen (it was the first roll he had ever seen too). After a day or two of work Bill discovered he had found his calling. Soon he opened his own carpet business, selling by day and installing by night. Over 40 years Bill built his business, House of Carpets, into New Mexico's largest flooring retailer with eight statewide locations and over 200 employees. Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy, who lovingly cared for him everyday; his sons, Kerry and Kevin and Kevin's wife, Kelli; and five grandchildren: Jeff, Joanna, Casey, Corey, and Dixie. Visitation is Saturday, January 7, 2006, 9:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, 1111 University NE. A Memorial Service will follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment is Monday, January 9, 2006, 1:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. GUTHRIE -- Maude Tully Guthrie, who taught biology at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for 34 years, died December 24, 2005 at the home of her son Kenneth in Albuquerque. Mrs. Guthrie had celebrated her 102nd birthday earlier this year. Mrs. Guthrie came to Las Cruces in 1926 to join the faculty of what was then New Mexico A&M College. At that time she was the only woman on the teaching staff of A&M's School of Arts and Sciences. During her first years at A&M in addition to teaching biology, she conducted the women's physical education program and coached the women's basketball team. She interrupted her teaching career for several years in the 1930s and 1940s in order to devote more time to her two young sons, but rejoined the A&M biology faculty after WWII. She retired in 1965. Mrs. Guthrie won recognition for her ability as a teacher. The New Mexico A&M Associated Women Students chose her as their annual Woman of Achievement for 1958. In 1984 the NMSU Board of Regents, citing her teaching accomplishments, honored her with the Regent's Medal. In making the award, the Regents noted that "she diligently pursued a career devoted to teaching students" and that "many former students claim that her teaching was responsible for their success." She enjoyed following the careers of former students and was always pleased to learn about their accomplishments. In Las Cruces, Mrs. Guthrie was active in community affairs. Among the many organizations in which she participated were the American Association of University Women, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Progress Club, and the Society of Sigma Xi. She helped organize, and served for many years as faculty advisor to, Mu Beta, an honorary society for outstanding women students at NMSU. In all of these endeavors, she applied her characteristic energy and warm interest in people. Mrs. Guthrie was born Maude Tully on July 19, 1903 on her parents' farm near Monte Vista, CO. She attended primary and high schools in Monte Vista and then studied at the University of Colorado where she received a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in biology. In 1929 she married Gwynne L. "Gus" Guthrie, also a member of the New Mexico A&M faculty and later Dean of the NMSU School of Business Administration. After her husband's death in 1994, Mrs. Guthrie made her home in Albuquerque, NM with her younger son, Kenneth. By that time she was a serious student of the piano, at the insistence of her parents. At the beginning of World War II, Betty's family moved to the now suburb of Glen Elen, IL, where the family could keep a garden, chickens, and rabbits in anticipation of the food shortages and rationing caused by the war. She told many stories about those adventures. Betty graduated from Glenbard High School in 1945, and entered a Navy sponsored nursing program at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. After a year she developed health problems and withdrew. In the fall of 1947, she and her brother boarded the A.T.S. F. and headed to Highlands University, joining a small contingent of students from the Chicago suburbs. There she met Ed Marinsek, who was attracted by her long blonde hair, beauty, and personality. At school she had already acquired the nickname of "Sparkle Plenty" after the Dick Tracy comic strip of the time. She and Ed were married on February 14, 1948 in Mora, NM on a beautiful winter day. Shortly thereafter they moved to Gallup, NM, her husband's home town, where she was warmly accepted by his family. Ed's mother taught her how to cook on a coal and wood range. In the ensuing years she developed and avid interest and skill as a gourmet cook. All who shared at her table can testify to that. Their first son, Karl was born later that year and shortly thereafter they moved to the Chicago suburbs so that Ed could complete his degree. Their first daughter, Shellie was born Christmas Day 1949 and their children, Greg, Matt, and Cassandra followed. After Ed's graduation they moved to Albuquerque in 1952, bought their first home that sheltered their family for 49 years thereafter. Betty returned to U.N.M. and received her BS degree in education in 1961 and started her career as a 1st grade teacher. She had a gift for teaching. Betty received a MA degree in Guidance and Counseling and in the following 15 years, served as a counselor in many schools in all parts of the city, working with the prosperous and poor. The last years of her counseling career were at El Dorado High School where she was a positive impact on the lives of countless students and parents. After retirement in 1986 she and Ed, their family and friends, built a summer home on the Pine River near Durango, CO. Some of the happiest moments of her life were spent there each year. Betty was an avid reader and a lover of good music. She was an amateur painter and collector of southwestern art. Her home reflected her eclectic tastes. She took pride in the home decorating skills, displaying her many lifelong collections of the arts. Her last couple of years were plagued with poor health, ending in renal failure. The family is ever grateful to the medical caregivers at Lovelace for their support and care in her final days. She is survived by her husband, Ed; living offspring, Karl, Matthew, and Cassandra; their spouses; and her grandchildren, Robert and Jessica; a brother, Robert and his family from Las Cruces, NM. In celebration of Betty's life, the family extends an invitation to friends and relatives to join them from 1 - 3 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the family home at 6404 Little Joe NW in Taylor Ranch. MCCORMICK -- Dorothy (Dottie) Cox McCormick, 88, passed away January 4, 2006, after a brief illness. She is survived by her children, Michael McCormick and wife, Wanda of Las Cruces; Mary Skavaril of Columbus OH; Maureen Ashley and husband, Everett of Tulsa OK; Monica O'Reilly and husband, Mel, and Margo McCormick and husband, Ranne Miller of Albuquerque; and a sister, Mary Helen Ewing of Albuquerque. A daughter, Peggy Akin Wilkison, predeceased her. Three sisters also predeceased her, Margaret Davies and Louise Marron, both of Albuquerque, and Betty Ann Rankin of California. Dottie is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Dottie was born to a pioneer Albuquerque family on June 25, 1917, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. She was a graduate of Albuquerque High and UNM, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and she taught school in Albuquerque until 1945, when she married Don G. McCormick and moved to Carlsbad, residing there until 1971 when she returned to Albuquerque. Dottie dearly loved the Albuquerque of her youth, reminiscing often about the old neighborhoods and the fun she and her friends had picnicking or skiing in the mountains and going to movies at the Kimo Theater. As a young woman, she enjoyed meeting the trains at the Alvarado, getting photographs of movie stars as they got off the trains (and she had quite a collection of glossy movie posters, obtained, somewhat surreptitiously she admitted, from the walls of the Kimo). She adored the music of her generation, imparting that love to her children, and she never forgot the words to those songs. Before the war, Dottie spent exciting summers with her girlfriends, traveling by ship to Hawai'i in 1939 and to Puerto Rico in 1940, trips that made for a lifetime of fond memories. And she really could do the hula. The last three years of her life were spent pleasantly at La Vida Llena in Albuquerque, participating in many activities and working her crossword puzzles. She leaves many friends among the staff and her fellow residents. The family wishes to thank the capable, compassionate and gentle people, both at the Heart Hospital and at VistaCare Hospice, for their loving care of Dottie during her last week of life, affording her every dignity. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to VistaCare Hospice Foundation, 5639 Jefferson NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109. In accordance with her wishes, Dottie's remains will be cremated and there will be no formal services. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333

TOBEY -- Gene Tobey, age 60, of Santa Fe and formerly of Port Aransas and Mason, TX, passed away Wednesday January 4, 2006 at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born May 26, 1945 in Utah to James G. and Annabelle Tobey. Mr. Tobey was a well known southwestern sculptor, known for stylized animal sculptures with his trademark line drawings incised into the surface. In 1985, he and Rebecca married and blended their five children into a family. He began collaborating with Rebecca shortly after their marriage, showing in art galleries across the United States. Together they pioneered large, brightly-colored ceramic animals, and in the mid 90s their work shifted to bronze sculptures with lively, innovative patinas. The art world has lost one of its creative innovators, but his family and friends will miss his humor, great sense of adventure, passion for nature, and his soul.
