BICKEL -- Victor R. Bickel, a longtime, active member of the community, died on March 22, 2004, at the age of 77. He was a former FEMA Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and Director of Environmental Health for the City of Albuquerque. Vic was born in Lowell, Wisconsin, on May 30, 1926. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist's Mate on the U.S.S. Vestal (AR4) assigned to duty in the South Pacific and up the Yangtze River to Shanghai, China. After serving his country for two years, he attended the University of Wisconsin graduating with a B.S. in Botany and Plant Physiology. It was during this time that he met and married his wife of 38 years, Lorraine E. Morgan, who predeceased him in 1988. Vic continued his education at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health graduating with a Master's Degree in 1959 and working in this field for the next 30 years. He moved to Albuquerque with his family in 1968 where he was hired as Director of Environmental Health. In the early 1970's he was an active member of Keep New Mexico Beautiful, Inc., a non-profit recycling organization, and was President from 1973-1975. In 1980 Mr. Bickel became the FEMA Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Albuquerque-Bernalillo County. There he planned community disaster drills, and he continued his focus on public safety. He retired from this position in 1985. Over the years Vic enjoyed many interests, including politics, woodworking, and gardening. During the past year while residing at Sunrise Assisted Living, he was President of Resident Council and acted as Internal Quality Assurance Coordinator for Dining Services. He led a weekly current events discussion group, and was an active member in Library Club and Christian Sharing. Vic also enjoyed being a Grandparent for First Graders at Double Eagle Elementary School, where the children read to him each Monday, and he read to them. This was his favorite role in his final months. Linda M. Ellis's poem, "The Dash," reminds us that the dates on the tombstone do not matter. What is important is the dash between those years - the accomplishments in a lifetime. This is something that Victor R. Bickel understood and did very well. Vic will be greatly missed by his family, friends, the residents and staff at Sunrise, and the students at Double Eagle. He is survived by a daughter, Sandi; his brother, David; and a nephew and a niece. His cremains will be buried in the Reeseville Cemetery in Reeseville, Wisconsin. Donations in his memory can be made to the Double Eagle Library, 8901 Lowell Drive, Albuquerque, NM 87122 or to the Humane Society. Vic made the most of the "dash between those years." Nason was called upon in 1960 to play a role in the early development of Peace Corps programs and operations for Latin America. During the early days of the Kennedy administration he opted for field service rather than the Washington administrative hierarchy, undertaking program exploration in Venezuela and Chile, later assuming the directorship of the Peace Corps in Chile and the Southern Cone with residence in Santiago and exploratory travel in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Upon his return to the States, Nason organized and directed at the University of New Mexico the Peace Corps' first year-round training center for Volunteers, through which passed hundreds of young men and women destined for assignment in Latin American republics. His last official duty for the Peace Corps before returning to full time teaching was to conduct a field evaluation of Peace Corps training among volunteers after six months of field work abroad. The survey called for site visitations in Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil. Other activities on the UNM campus involved the organization and/or direction of the State Department's Seminars on Higher Education in the Americas. This program brought together University Presidents and Deans from American republics for evaluative deliberations in Latin American capitals, at the National Science Foundation and at the Universities of New Mexico and Kansas. Additional campus functions include a decisive role in the creation of a Faculty Senate, chairmanship of the Faculty Committee on Human Rights in Central America, and Director of the Ibero-American Studies Ph.D program. His publications include, in addition to articles and reviews published in Argentine and US journals, collaborative works such as Charlar Repasando with Thelma Campbell, Bibliograf¡a de Benito Lynch with Horacio Jorge Becco, "Radiograf¡a de la universidad en las Am‚ricas" with Pedro David, Tres problemas universitarios with Dinko Cvitanovic and Jaysu¤o Abramovich, and three chapters in Kern, et al. Oligarchical Politics and the System of Caciquismo in the Luso-Hispanic World, as well as some 30 professional papers presented in the US, Colombia, Spain, Chile and Argentina. Subsequent to his retirement in 1982, Marshall served as member and president of the Maxwell Museum Association, board member and chairperson of the Mayors Advisory Board to the Albuquerque Department of Senior Affairs, and as president and member of the Advisory Council, Highland Senior Center where he also taught a course in intermediate Spanish and served for 5 years as instructor in the AARP 55 Alive driving course for seniors. TURNER -- Gloria B. Turner January 3, 1945-April 25, 2002 It has been two years since we last saw you. Heard your voice. Heard your laugh. Felt your arms around us. But we still think of you every day. We include you in our lives Just as we did before. We reflect upon your life and all of the Joy you brought into our hearts. While it has been two years since we Heard your voice. Heard your laugh. Felt your arms around us. We know that you are still with us. Guiding us though life's joy and pain. Laughing with us when we are happy. Comforting us when we are sad. Holding us when we sleep. Watching over us like you always have. It is sad to see time go on without you. But absence makes the heart grow fonder. And although our family feels shattered, and nothing appears as it was before. God will summon us. One at a time and Our family will be whole again. It has been two years since we Heard your voice. Heard your laugh. Felt your arms around us. But you are still alive in our Hearts.
