Missing the wide open spaces of the west, she took a job in the secret city of Los Alamos (she had to tell people she lived and worked in Santa Fe) to work for the Atomic Energy Commission. In Los Alamos, she met and fell in love with her husband, Earl Levitt. They were partners, parents, and companionate friends for over 60 years until his death in 2009. They moved to Albuquerque in 1955 and happily made their lives and raised their children here. Ardell was an extraordinary mother, a role which she cherished. Her children, Havens Levitt and her partner Rebecca Dakota, and Dana Levitt and his wife, Adele Levitt, and her grandchildren, Ethan and Hannah, all benefited from her sweet presence in their lives. She had the skill and patience to create technical manuscripts (without the aid of the "delete" button) and sew beautiful clothes for herself and daughter. She was funny, playful, and artistic, the best jacks player this side of the Mississippi (perhaps, on the other side, too), a calligrapher, an illustrator, and a great cook. She made the best biscuits, lasagna, and peach preserves. In her later years she became an avid reader, especially of biography. Toward the end of her life, despite many challenges, she maintained her gentle, kind way with everyone. Her life was a blessing. A memorial will be held Tuesday, July 3rd, 4 pm, at Daniels Funeral Home, 7601 Wyoming NE, followed by a celebration of all things Ardell. LONG -- JAMES LAMB JR. Age 83, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012. Dad grew up in a small town in Western Kentucky of 2000 people called Sturgis. His family was Catholic in a town that didn't think much of Catholicism. In spite of a small a town education; he graduated from Notre Dame University in 1952 with a degree in Commerce. While serving in Washington, D.C. during the Korean war, Dad met and married my mother and together they had Karen Kuel and her husband Steve, Jim Long and his wife Kathie, Mike Long and his wife Karen, Gina Richardson and her husband Marty, Nancy Hughes and her husband Bill, John Long and his wife Debbie, Matt Long, Chris Long and Paul Long. Finances were never a part of their decision when it came to having children. They simply followed their faith. After the war, Dad came back to Sturgis and became quite the entrepreneur. He opened a Dollar General Store, an insurance company, part owner in a drug store, owned and managed many rental homes, and ran a 600 acre farm that had been in the family for generations. All of these businesses were supported by the wages of the local coal mines and all were prosperous. But in 1968 the coal mines shut down. And because of that, all of Dad's businesses started to fail one by one with the family farm being the last to be sold. Dad was 42 years old, with nine children, a wife that had never worked, with no livelihood. This might have been the undoing for a lot of men. Instead Dad navigated our family through this difficult time with grace and dignity. He moved his brood from a five bedroom antebellum home in Sturgis to a three bedroom track home with one bath in Nashville, found a job managing a department store which was the first time that he had ever worked for someone else. It was a very humbling experience for my father. But he stayed the course because he understood the responsibility he had to Mom and to the nine of us. Dad loved us always but he's in heaven only because he loved us when we were totally not lovable. Without going into detail...we all tried his patience. And we are lucky that he didn't kill each and every one of us. He counseled us to lead responsible lives and bailed us out when we didn't. He liked to call these counsel sessions "workshops", and we had plenty of them. With nine children, you might think that we didn't receive that one on one attention, but he had the gift of making each of us feel like an only child. Dad's greatest love was Mom. We were planning their 60th anniversary for October. Mom thinking she was getting a "Notre Dame" graduate and thus easy street., Dad thinking he was getting a woman that loved to cook and clean. Both were wrong but still they grew together and created a life of commitment, adventure and laughter. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am, followed with a Memorial Mass at 10:30 am, Monday, July 2, 2012 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1502 Sara Road SE, Rio Rancho, NM. OLGUIN -- JAMES Age 81, a resident of Albuquerque went to be with our Lord and Savior in the late evening of Thursday, June 28, 2012. He is survived by children, Anthony Rivera and wife Tami, Richard Olguin, Patrick Olguin and wife Maryann, Helen Smith and husband Paul, David Olguin, John Olguin, Joseph Olguin, Elizabeth Olguin, Anna Fajardo and husband Richard, Susan Burd and husband Richard, Mary Lorang and husband John Walton. Mr. Olguin is survived by his brother Ruben Padilla. He is also survived by grandchildren, Dustin Smith, Nicole Olguin, Alicia Fajardo, Solomon Lorang, Natasha Olguin, Michael Rivera, Joshua Olguin-Greene, Anthony Burd and Alex Burd. He was especially fond of his sister's (Lucy and Mary) children and his brother's (Ruben) children. Those who preceded him in death include: his wife Ruby, his grandfather who helped raise him - Jesus Olguin, his mother Josephine Padilla, his step-father Leonardo Padilla, his brothers: Claude, Louis, Bernie, his sisters: Lucy, Mida, Mary. Dad's passion (and Mom's too in her life) was first and foremost, to serve the Lord - both in preaching to whom-ever listened, and distributing Bibles. Dad served our country, first in the US Air Force, then in the Marines (both Active (Korean War) and Reserves). While he absolutely loved and made reference to the Marines and his passion for them, leave it to Dad to reply to a commanding officers request he get ready to go overseas, "you go!" Dad was called twice to the in-processing center at Kirtland for a tour in Vietnam...twice, he was told "go home, you have too many kids." While in the Korean War-era, In his stubbornness, he turned-down field commissions for 2nd lieutenant and Chief Warrant Officer. "Don't call me Sir, I was only an enlisted man." Dad was in the Car business for close to 40 years, and while still serving in the Marine Reserves, Dad owned/operated two consecutive car businesses in Santa Fe (1950's - early 60's). We believe some ailments may have developed when he arrived back in town, hauling a fresh load of cars from the Amarillo Auto Auction, only to be traumatized to see that many of the windows in those cars on the lot had been broken - seems some of his children had engaged in a rock fight. Those who Dad and Mom determined were responsible endured much hardship through the summer months. Dad and Mom eventually brought the family to Albuquerque (late 60's) where dad continued his career at the auto dealerships in town. While being a car salesman may be a source of comedic reference to some, dad's knowledge of the car business was extremely thorough (quite astounding actually), we don't believe there were too many individuals who would drive out to a remote location to assist someone whose brand new vehicle was "disabled," but he would and did frequently. These types of committed ethical, moral and honest values and response(s) to the welfare for his customers, brought him a very large following at whichever dealership he worked. He must have been doing something right for owners of some of the car dealerships to come to the home to ask him to go work for them. In Dad's latter years, he mellowed very much...his grandchildren brought much joy to his life. Mom's passing on 6 Apr 2012 brought a sincere and profound realization of just how much she was indeed, the cornerstone of the family. It was her passing that impacted dad's health considerably. We would also like to give a special Thank You to the staff at Vista Care Hospice for their wonderful and specialized care for our father, James. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary, 9300 Golf Course Rd NW. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses she searched the Holy Scriptures for life instruction and knowledge provided by Jehovah, and enjoyed sharing and encouraging all who would listen. She loved music, especially the music of northern New Mexico which she grew up hearing, and she loved to dance to that music. She wrote two novels: the first, staged in Saudi Arabia, was based on her experience and understanding of the Saudi people; the second, staged in Espanola, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe during WWII, was also based on her personal experiences and relationships during that historical period. Always sincere, cordial, and respectful of all people she lived her faith all of her days. Following the death of Stata's mother, Stata wrote the following beautiful words about her own mother; those words have proven prophetic in nature of her own life: ". . . your sympathy and kindness somehow eases the loss of so dear a person as our mother. [We] truly believe there could be no one so sincere or good as she was. It might be that only now [we] can appreciate the meaning of 'mother', and certainly her life was devoted to us all." Cremation has taken place; arrangements by Riverside Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest with her paternal grandparents at Elizabethtown Cemetery, Elizabethtown (Eagle Nest), NM.
