BURGER -- Ann McDowell Burger grew up in Maxwell, NM where she was born to Alice Rosier McDowell and Milton T. McDowell on Feb. 23, 1921. She attended Park College, Parkville, Missouri and graduated from NM Highlands University. She began her teaching career in Maxwell, but soon married James 'Scotty' Burger and followed him to California so she could be nearer to him during WWII. She returned to Maxwell and worked for the State Highway Dept. before resuming her teaching career, which she continued as her family moved first to Las Cruces and then to Albuquerque. While in Las Cruces she earned her MA degree from NMSU. Ann took her students' welfare very much to heart and sought not only to teach them academic material, but also to give them life skills and values that would enable them to lead honorable and responsible lives. When she retired from the Albuquerque Public Schools, she became an enthusiastic volunteer working first with the ABQ Visiting Nurses and then with the ABQ Visitors Bureau where she thoroughly enjoyed meeting new and interesting people. Ann was a keen observer of her fellow man. Not much escaped her. She possessed an amazing intelligence, a prodigious memory and a wonderful dry sense of humor. Years after an event she could recall names and dates with ease. To hear her recount the colorful events of her early years in Maxwell was a delight. She was innovative and tenacious. Whatever she set out to do, she did well. She was a gifted seamstress, a great cook, and an avid reader. Ann was especially close to her sister, Jane Schaefer, and her two brothers, Jim and John McDowell and their families. Aunt Ann always took interest in the lives of her nieces and nephews and never failed to be gladdened by their visits. She was a faithful and strong helpmate to her husband of 62 years. She had a very special affection for her son-in-law Hilary Arathoon. She was a most loving mother to her only daughter, Alice, and she adored her two grandsons Andoe and Peter. Following a fall in her home and surgery, Ann peacefully passed on at a local hospital with her family praying at her bedside on Saturday morning, October 22, 2005. She owned and operated the Knotty Pine Cafe on west Central, and also ran several motels including the Capri Motel in downtown Albuquerque. Most recently she managed the Green Acres Mobile Home Village on North Second Street from May 1979 until May 1992. She lived a very full and independent life, keeping her own apartment until she finally relented and moved in with her daughter, Mary Ann in 2001 at the age of 98. The magnitude of her life can be seen through the four generations of family that followed her. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, E.J. and Elizabeth Tschann; her brother and sister in law, John and Dorothy Tschann, and her son in law, Fred Gross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Loomis, in 1992. Marie was born March 17, 1915 in New York City. She was the daughter of Alois and Maria Habulin who emigrated from Europe in the early 1900's. After finishing high school during the Depression she moved to Washington DC where she was employed with the US Dept. of Agriculture. While in Washington she met Franklin Loomis whom she married on New Year's Eve, 1938. Following the births of their children they moved to Albuquerque in 1949 where Marie became one of the founding members of the First Unitarian Church. Along with being a homemaker and raising her children, she worked for the Department of Energy until her retirement in 1985. Since retirement she traveled extensively, took great pleasure in her family, enjoyed exercising and particularly line dancing which she continued to do several times a week until just before her death. Marie led a full and happy life. Her goodness, compassion, generosity and zest for life were legend. Her infectious optimism and keen sense of humor, wit and intelligence made her a joy to be with. She could adroitly converse with anyone on nearly any subject and make that person feel special. She instilled in her family the best qualities of kindness, humility and love for our fellow man regardless of station. She took such joy in each grandchild and great grandchild, and embraced each day with the anticipation of what it might bring in things great and small. She inspired us all and will be missed beyond words. Memorial service will be held Monday, October 31, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE. A letter to our Daddy: Daddy when I see you smile I can face anything, and I can do anything. For every breath I take I will look for you. You see Daddy I used to see in black and white but when we needed someone to turn to, you put the blue back into the sky, you put the rainbow in my eyes, and now there's color everywhere. You put the red back in the rose, just when I needed it the most. You taught us love, courage and you gave us strength. You put back the silver lining everywhere. You put back the color into our lives. You taught us to see all the beauty in color. And now that you're gone we will remember you in all the colors that we see. So Daddy it will be with great difficulty that we learn to spread our wings and fly without you. For you are now and will be forever our Hero. One more thing, when you catch up with all your family, compadres and friends from the Fire Department, and you're feeling lonely, Daddy you can always come for me. For you will be missed, more than you will ever know. We love you more than the stars in the sky. Arrangements by Salazar & Sons Mortuary 400 Third St. SW. 247-4124
