Obituary for LOOMIS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 30, 2005

Mary (Marie) Loomis, age 90, died peacefully in the arms of her family Thursday, October 27th. A resident of Albuquerque for more than 55 years she leaves behind a large, loving family who miss her deeply. She is survived by her children, Andy Loomis, Stephanie Grenier and her husband, Guillermo, Peter Loomis and his wife, Lu along with eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Loomis, in 1992. Marie was born March 17, 1915 in New York City. She was the daughter of Alois and Maria Habulin who emigrated from Europe in the early 1900's. After finishing high school during the Depression she moved to Washington DC where she was employed with the US Dept. of Agriculture. While in Washington she met Franklin Loomis whom she married on New Year's Eve, 1938. Following the births of their children they moved to Albuquerque in 1949 where Marie became one of the founding members of the First Unitarian Church. Along with being a homemaker and raising her children, she worked for the Department of Energy until her retirement in 1985. Since retirement she traveled extensively, took great pleasure in her family, enjoyed exercising and particularly line dancing which she continued to do several times a week until just before her death. Marie led a full and happy life. Her goodness, compassion, generosity and zest for life were legend. Her infectious optimism and keen sense of humor, wit and intelligence made her a joy to be with. She could adroitly converse with anyone on nearly any subject and make that person feel special. She instilled in her family the best qualities of kindness, humility and love for our fellow man regardless of station. She took such joy in each grandchild and great grandchild, and embraced each day with the anticipation of what it might bring in things great and small. She inspired us all and will be missed beyond words. Memorial service will be held Monday, October 31, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park.
