Obituary for BYRNES

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 30, 2005

Mary Victoria "Honey" Byrnes, 101, passed away Friday, October 14, 2005 at the Laurel Canyon Rehabilitation Center in Albuquerque after breaking her hip in August. She received excellent care from the people who worked with her. Her family greatly appreciates the professional care and effort the staff gave her while she was there. She was born November 5, 1903 to E.J. Tschann and Elizabeth Ann Byrnes in Missouri. She grew up in Little Rock, AK attending school at St. Mary's Academy Boarding School. After marring in 1926 she moved to Altadena, CA where her daughter Mary Ann was born and then moved to Fullerton, CA where her son Roger was born. Shortly after coming to New Mexico in 1940, she found herself a single mother, having to take care of her children, as well as her aging mother by herself. Despite the financial and personal difficulties that she faced, she always found a way to take care of her family. She owned and operated the Knotty Pine Cafe on west Central, and also ran several motels including the Capri Motel in downtown Albuquerque. Most recently she managed the Green Acres Mobile Home Village on North Second Street from May 1979 until May 1992. She lived a very full and independent life, keeping her own apartment until she finally relented and moved in with her daughter, Mary Ann in 2001 at the age of 98. The magnitude of her life can be seen through the four generations of family that followed her. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, E.J. and Elizabeth Tschann; her brother and sister in law, John and Dorothy Tschann, and her son in law, Fred Gross. She is survived by her son, Roger Byrnes and wife, Pat; grandchildren, Judy, Tim, Jeanne Marie of Gilbert AZ, Joy Ellen; and great-grandchildren, Trevor and Forest; grandson, Michael and wife, Krissi of Phoenix AZ; and grandson, Sean of Norfolk VA; nephew, Edward and wife, Mary. She left behind four generations: two children, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The orneriest saints that God ever put on this earth is finally at rest, may God bless her and let her enjoy the peace she so richly deserves. The family asks that in lieu of flowers do something nice for another person. A Rosary will be recited Friday evening, November 4, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel of Sunrise. A Mass will be held at 8:30 Saturday, November 5, 2005, her 102 birthday at Annunciation Church, 2621 Vermont NE. A reception will follow.
