SHOATS -- Daniel Dean Biagi Shoats, 49, and Ellen Jeanne Schippers Shoats, 48, died Saturday, October 1, 2005 in an automobile accident. They were childhood sweethearts. Both graduated from West Mesa High School, Danny in 1974 and Ellen in 1975. They were married in 1977. Shortly thereafter, Daniel and Ellen moved to Roswell, NM where Danny studied to be an aircraft mechanic. Both his father, Dan Shoats and father-in-law, Norm Schippers had worked in the airline industry. Then Danny and Ellen moved back to Albuquerque, NM where Danny worked at Cutter Airport for a few years. Again, following in his father's footsteps, Danny was drawn to the construction business and it would become his life's passion. Dan Shoats, Sr., deceased since 1967, was a well-known Albuquerque contractor. Danny was most happy with a hammer and a fresh sawn board. The young couple eventually formed their own construction company, Dan Shoats Construction. Ellen kept the books and worked at Sunwest Bank. In 1983, they had their first child, Leah, followed by Russell in 1985 and Dominic in 1988. Their life revolved around their children. Danny was teaching them to catch, throw, kick a ball, fish and tend to animals when they were still in diapers. At Alameda Elementary School Ellen was so active in the kids' education that she was often mistaken for the principal. It was rare to see them apart. It was always Danny, Ellen and the kids. They had a passion for the outdoors and bought land in Chama, NM where they would go with regularity to camp and fish. Danny was an avid fisherman, nothing gave him more peace than to spend the day fly or cast fishing at the Chama River. Like his father, the best part was baiting and re-baiting hooks for his children. They always had a small herd of cattle that they often had to chase down Fourth St. When the children were older, Ellen began working at Intel where she continued to work until present. She worked the night shift, would come home, bake cookies, go volunteer at school, sleep a few hours, be up when the kids came home for the day, cook and then leave for work. It was often said of Ellen's cooking that she could even make rocks taste good. Danny, after a long day of work, always made time to go over dribbling, passing and batting. He coached little league and Ellen had dinners for the teams. Little league turned into baseball, soccer, basketball and football. Dominic, a Senior and starting player at Valley High school, has the Shoats athletic flair as well. Danny and Ellen had hearts the size of a mountain. The North Valley was their home and they touched the lives of many families through their dedication to making the community a better place. Always a pair, they worked hard, loved long, laughed loud and raised a beautiful family. Ultimately, together is how they left this earth to experience their next journey. We do know that wherever they are, Ellen will be cooking, planning and organizing; Danny will be building, fishing, joking, coaching and they will always be doing it together. They will be forever missed and loved by their family and friends. Mom and Dad, we love you and thank you, Leah, Russell and Dominic. Daniel Dean Biagi Shoats was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Leali Biagi Shoats and Maria de La Paz Carillo Shoats. He is survived by his children, Leah Maria Shoats, Russell Thomas Shoats, and Dominic Dean Shoats; brother, Rudolph Thomas Shoats and wife, Jamie Rothmeyer; sisters, Soledad (Sally) Hindi and husband, Joseph, Elizabeth Shoats and husband, Roy Wade, and Marlene Shoats Weaks and husband, Dan Weaks. Ellen is survived by her parents, Norm Schippers and Beverly Schippers; children, Leah Maria Shoats, Russell Thomas Shoats, and Dominic Dean Shoats; sister, Angela Ghiassi and husband, Hamid and brother, Burton Schippers and wife, Susan Rehrig. Both are survived by nephews, Joachim Biagi Marjon, Jordan and Brandon Ghiassi, Evan Weaks and Matthew Wade; nieces, Jessie Wade and Isabella de La Paz Weaks; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be held Monday, October 10, 2005, 11:00 a.m., at Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church, 1801 Montano Road NW on Montano. Due to limited parking and seating, please carpool and arrive early. SHUCH -- Betty M. Schuch, resident of New Mexico since 1950, succumbed to a culmination of many prolonged illnesses on October 5, 2005. She was a feisty lady, and was able to fight through many painful and debilitating events, even working part time until age 78. She was attended by her family and is survived by her five sons, Charles and wife, Diana of Albuquerque, Douglas and wife, Ingrid of Escondido, California, Brian of Albuquerque, Thomas of Albuquerque, and Steven of Westport, Washington. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Young and husband, Thomas of Ibadin, Nigeria, and sister-in law, Elsie McAllister of Munster, Indiana. She has seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Chicago on December 11, 1925, and moved with her family to Los Alamos in 1950. In 1961, the family moved to Albuquerque. She loved New Mexico and its cultural diversity. She especially loved the chile, and made regular pilgrimages to Chimayo to eat and buy red chile. She also had a great appreciation for turquoise jewelry and native pottery. In her final days, she was handicapped by a breathing tube, but insisted on telling jokes and making many various comments by pointing to an alphabet board and spelling things out. (Her sons always bragged that they never knew her to miss the spelling of any word.) Her small back yard was beautifully landscaped, and she spent many happy hours tending it. She was notorious for being "warm enough," and many times refused to wear a coat in winter weather. She passed on to her sons her insistence on being independent. She always wanted to do things, if she could, without burdening others. She was politically astute, and did her best to volunteer to help her favorite candidates in their election campaigns. For the past two years, Betty resided in an assisted-living facility. She had rehabilitated herself to the point that she was scheduled to move back into her own beloved home on Monday, September 12. Unfortunately, she became very ill just four days prior to her return, and was admitted to the hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 114 Carlisle Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM, at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 16. The family requests that any donations be directed to the American Lung Association, or to the Arthritis Foundation. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

STEPHENSON -- Barbera W. Stephenson, an attorney and engineer, passed away among loved ones on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 following a long bout with heart disease. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; son, Tom; sister-in-law, Pat Randall and husband, Brad; cousin, Marilyn Dissell and husband Bruce. Barbera was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emerson D. Wertz in Bryan, OH on December 10, 1938. She attended Smith College and went on to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering in the class of 1960. She married her husband and best friend of 45 years, Gerard J. Stephenson, Jr., on June 25, 1960 on Chapel Island in Upper Saranac Lake, NY. Barbera began her long and distinguished career as the first female engineer of a promising start-up company outside of Boston, Digital Equipment Corporation (now part of HP). Her work at Digital not only resulted in the granting of a patent in her name for an analog to digital converter system, but the publishing of a number of technical manuals, the authorship of which allowed her to continue her lifelong love of writing. While living in Maryland in 1969, Barbera was awarded an additional patent on the "Punch Taster's Guide," an aide for reducing punch recipes for tasting purposes. On March 1, 1970, Barbera and Jerry welcomed their son, Thomas into the world. A few years later, the Stephenson family moved to New Mexico, which has been their proud and welcoming home ever since. In 1978, Barbera chose to fulfill her desire to actively right wrongs and represent the interests of ordinary citizens, particularly women, by pursing the law. She graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1981, excelling in particular in estate planning and taxation-a testament to her unique combined strengths in both writing and numbers. Barbera spent the next twenty years in private practice in Albuquerque, providing legal advice to hundred of clients on topics from real estate law to estate planning to, of course, taxation. She was recognized multiple times in the Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of American Law, and served in 1995 as the Chair of the Solo and Small Firm Practioners Section of the New Mexico State Bar Association. In 1992, she authored "Financing Your Home Purchase in New Mexico," a how-to guide for saving money and avoiding problems when financing a home.
