Ortiz Y Pino -- One Month Memorial In Loving Memory of MELA ORTIZ Y PINO DE MARTIN June 12, 1918 - July 30, 1998 It's a month now that Mela has left us, but we would like for her relatives and friends that missed announcements to be aware of Mela's death and some of her background. Mela died Thursday night, July 30th, following a long, courageous bout with various illnesses. Mela was best known for the beautiful Christmas cards of the Madonna and Child that she and her husband, Robert Martin, created with photographs and history of the selected image for that year. They even exchanged cards with the royal family of Spain. Mela was born in Galisteo, NM. After graduating from high school, she attended Lorreto Heights College in Denver, where she studied sociology, Spanish and international relations. In 1943, she joined the U.S.O. and was sent to Tyler, Texas. Later she was transferred to Roswell, NM to manage two U.S.O. clubs. When the War ended, Mela returned to Santa Fe and chaired the youth committee of the National Council of Catholic Women. A U.S.O. club opened in Santa Fe in 1946, Ortiz y Pino was named its director. This is where she met her husband, Robert Martin. They married in 1950. In 1967, Mela was given the honor of being the only New Mexico woman to receive the Miembro Titular del Instituto de Cultura Hispanica de Madrid award from the Spanish government. In 1987, Mela presented Queen Sofia of Spain with photographs Robert had taken of the Queen, then a teenager, and her mother, Queen Fredrica of Greece, during a 1958 visit to Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Queen was so appreciative of the gift that she sent a thank-you note via telegram to the Martins. Mela is survived by her loving husband; her sister, Concha Ortiz y Pino de Kleven; and many loving relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, August 3, at St. Francis Cathedral. Interment followed at Rosario Cemetery. We miss you, Mela. Ruiz -- Gabriella Lourdes Ruiz died at birth on July 30, 1998. She was buried on August 3, 1998 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. She is survived by her mother, Vicki Chavez; her father, Louie T. Ruiz; her old sister, Victoria Ruiz and her twin sister, Isabella Ruiz. There will be a Memorial Mass for Gabriella on August 30, 1998 at Holy Rosary Church at the 5:30 p.m. mass. When God calls little ones, children to dwell with above, we mortals always question the wisdom of his love. For no heartache compares with the death of one small child who does so much to make this world more beautiful, so wonderful and mild, perhaps God tries always calling the aged to his fold and so he picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them and so he takes a few to make the land of heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult, but some how we must try. The saddest word that man can know will always be good-bye and so when little ones depart, we who are left behind must realize how much God loves them for"Angels" are hard to find. We love you and miss you very much, Your Mama, Daddy, Sisters, Nanas, Tatas, Uncles and Aunties.

Valdez -- IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY BELOVED SON LUCIANO CLIFFORD VALDEZ JR. Security Officer #205 Sandia Casino Security Dept. Born January 1, 1978 Died December 27,1997 FROM: Lorraine Gonzales-GuruleI would like to take this time to show special thanks to the staff of Sandia Casino. My son recently passed on to be with the Lord on the 27th day of December 1997. I was in need of help and support regarding the funeral and the burial of my son. Luciano was employed at the casino as a security officer. He had many friends such as officers, and coworkers, the secretaries, and the general manager among other employees from different departments. I contacted Richard Rojo, a close friend and a fellow officer, Myron Siddell, and Roberto Aragon, also friends and commanding officers of Lucianos's to help me with the arrangements for the funeral. They began with the officers that would be the pallbearers: Roberto Aragon, Richard Rojo, Myron Siddell, Daniel Roybal, Armando Graham, Shawn Lockey and Weldon Roberson. I requested that Lt. Myron Siddell arrange for Luciano to be buried in the uniform that was used by the Sandia Casino Security officers and he immediately abided with my wishes. The casino paid for and delivered a uniform to the Alameda Mortuary. Captain Armando Graham requested a months' mourning time for the entire Security Department as the officers shrouded their shields and wore purple ribbons to show respect for my son in his passing. Approximately 40 officers attended my son's funeral in uniform, this of course showed high respect for myself and my son. Armando Graham, Lonie Saiz, Tony Gilbert and George Delao helped me a great deal with the arrangements that had to be done as far as the funeral. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mr. Steve Simon the General Manager of the Casino and to Richard Jones, the Manager of the food and beverage department for donating food to my friends and family after the rosary and the funeral. I would like to thank all of the employees that donated some money to help cover the funeral expenses. Also Governor Alex Lujan and the Pueblo of Sandia for their help and support. I cannot forget the most important people that stood by my son and also by me when my son passed on: Angel Roybal, a very close friend of Luciano's and now of mine, Richard Rojo, Roberto Aragon, Deann Chaffee, Judy Garcia, Helen Archibeque, Georganna Romero, Irene Cox, Myron Siddell, Shawn Lockey, Albert Montano, Isaac Lovato and Lawrence Chavez as well as the rest of his close friends and coworkers from the casino. And his relatives. All of the people that were mentioned and also a lot of others who were not mentioned have helped me through all of this. I am very thankful and always will be. You all will be forever in my heart. Since my son passed on I have obtained employment at the casino and have been very happy and satisfied with the support the entire staff has showed me. Luciano considered you"his family" and now I do the same. I love and thank all of you from the bottom of my heart always. Sincerely, Lorraine Gonzales-Gurule of Cuba, New Mexico
