Vander Wagen -- Dr. Robert Charles Vander Wagen (Dr. Van), 72, skilled physician, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Monday, June 16, 2003 in Bullhead City, Arizona. Born in Rehoboth, New Mexico, December 24, 1930. He spent his childhood in and around the Pueblo of Zuni, where his family has been since 1897. Rob's elementary education was spent being taught by his mother in a one-room school house in Zuni. He attended Wasatch Academy (Utah), Calvin College and Seminary, University of Michigan Medical School and University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. He specialized in Pediatrics and Public Health. He retired in 1982 ending a career of 24 years with the USPHS, Indian Health Service and the State of New Mexico. After retirement, through writing he shared his fascination of the southwest desert with all who love her honest faces. Rob was preceded in death by his brother, Ted; his father, Simon; his mother, Wilhelmina; and his son, Robert Charles II. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Betty; siblings; Larry Vander Wagen, Bernice Stock, and Ethel Carey; children, Barbara Vander Wagen-Bieniewski, Ruth Garza, Claudia Delaney, Norman Vander Wagen, and Glenna Little. The grandchildren, Wendy, Jacquelyn, Rebecca, Paula, Roxanne, Jared, Rachel, Sarah, Kent, Ross, Joshua, and Caszandra. Also one great-grandchild, Courtney Jo. A multitude of friends and family will remember him for his quick wit and marvelous stories that gladdened our hearts and nourished our souls. He managed to enrich the lives of everyone he met. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at Hope Evangelical Church, 4710 Juan Tabo NE on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. A second Memorial Service is being planned for July in Zuni, New Mexico. The family of Rob Vander Wagen ask that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to a fund that will be a scholarship for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Dr. Van's name. Bannowsky -- Mary Irene Bannowsky, 84, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 12 years, passed away Friday, May 23, 2003. Irene was born Monday, March 24, 1919 in Farmington, NM to Rosa Belle Stallings, nee Warren, and Lorenzo Stallings who homesteaded in the Waterflow and Fruitland areas of New Mexico. After graduating from high school in 1937, she attended Mt. St. Joseph Junior College in Maple Mount, Kentucky where she earned her AA degree. In 1942 she attended New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM where she earned a B.A. degree. In 1969, she received her M.Ed from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. Irene taught at Caney High School in Caney, OK and Tse'Bit'ai Middle School in Shiprock, NM for many years. Irene is survived by her daughter, Frances Bannowsky; son, Lovell Alonzo"L.A." Bannowsky, III and wife, Geraldine McBroom of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Alyson Munday and husband, Eric of Seattle WA, John Bannowsky of Kihei, Maui, HI, Chris Bannowsky and his wife, Maggie, of Steamboat Springs, CO; great-granddaughter, Grace Mundy; sister, Frances Mahoney of Tucson, AZ; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, John Laurence Bannowsky; grandson, Simon Smith; sister, Pat Ryan and brothers, Warren Stallings and W.H. Charters. Irene was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Rosary will be recited Wednesday, May 28, 2003, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Romero -- Monique Allison and Kasey Jean Romero, 7, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2003 and Saturday, May 10, 2003 respectively. They were born September 7, 1995 to Armando J. and Teresa (Gutierrez) Romero in Albuquerque. They are preceded in death by their father; and great-grandparents, Eulalio and Rebecca Gutierrez of Magdalena, NM. Monique and Kasey are survived by their mother, Teresa of Lemitar, NM; sister, Felisha Romero of Montrose, CO; grandparents, Ben and Sandra Gutierrez of Lemitar; aunt, Patricia Hernandez of Lemitar; uncle, Raul Hernandez of Tucson, AZ; aunt, Charla Alsvig of Hayden, AZ; uncle, Christian Gutierrez of Lemitar; aunt, Juanita Gutierrez of Lemitar; cousins, Damion Gutierrez of Lemitar, Billy and Shauna Barbee of Globe, AZ. Cummins -- Dr. Ben Cummins died suddenly Tuesday night, April 15, 2003 in his home. He will always be the much-loved husband of Ann; the father of Martha and Julia; the grandfather of Ben, Julian, Ryan, and Simon; and the loved and respected father-in-law of Derrick and Michael. Ben grew up in Texas, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas in Austin and his MD at Baylor Medical School in Houston. He moved to Minnesota, where he met his wife Ann, to complete his residency in Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic. He was honored there with a fellowship in Child Psychiatry. He was a faculty member at the University of New Mexico for 23 years and also served as the training director for child and adolescent fellows. He spent his career as he spent his life, selflessly helping others. There was no problem too great nor need too small to escape Ben's attention. From a single flower to an entire symphony, from his closest family to the most distant stranger, Ben gave his all to help. Thanks Ben, for everything. A Memorial gathering will be held Saturday, April 19th, 11:00 a.m. at the UNM Alumni Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Naranjo -- Ralph Naranjo left his worldly bonds on Monday, April 14, 2003. He was preceded in death by his father, Simon Naranjo; mother, Lena Limon; brother, Albert Naranjo; sisters, Sadie Martinez and Louise Montoya. Ralph is survived by daughters, Kala Naranjo and Nicole Reneau and husband, Michael; grandchildren, Genaro, Flora and Reneau; brothers, Carlos Naranjo and Henry Limon Jr. of Mira Loma, CA and Jose Limon; sister, Irene Flores of Glendora, CA. and Christine Limon; He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Ralph was a former fire fighter, Director of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 641, as well as a charter member of Los Madrugadores Golf Club. Chavez -- Arthur Chavez, 70, a resident of Los Chavez, passed away at his home while surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, April 03, 2003. He was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Arthur was a Korean War Veteran receiving a Purple Heart and five Bronze Service Stars. He retired from the Civil Service after 30 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tiburcio and Rosina Chavez. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy; four sons, Ronnie and his wife, Teresa, Gene and his wife, Dolores, Dean and his wife, Liz, and Peter; four daughters, Donna Goldkuhl and her husband, Donald, Cathy Buero and her husband, Kenny, Hope of the family home, and Faith and her companion, Mike Padilla; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and eight brothers and sisters, Presey, Corine, Gregorita, Simon, Frank, Tibo, Mary Helen and Nilda. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. All services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 06, 2003 at 1:30pm followed by a rosary at 2:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 07, 2003 at 10:00am.
