Ayers -- James B. Ayers, 86, passed away peacefully early Monday, March 24, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Rosario Ayers. He is survived by his only daughter, Casey Schneider; four grandchildren, Jason and Travis Balderston, Paige and Delaney Schneider; two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Micah Balderston. He moved to Albuquerque in 1955 and retired¯from the Purchasing¯Department¯at¯Sandia Laboratories in 1980 after 23 years. Cremation and a private services will be held. the family wants to express their appreciation to the loving caregivers at Carefree Living, and to the staff of Presbyterian Home Healthcare. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Butler -- Claudia Butler, 38, a resident of Albuquerque since 1988, died in El Paso, TX, March 13, 2003. She was surrounded by her family and is survived by her son, Shawn Siddel; daughter, Kelly Black; her parents, Bill and Rosalie Johnston; sisters, Bunny Frutos, Robin Black, Rebecca Fields, and Billie Jo Johnson; and her best friend and life partner of 23 years, Steven McBride. Claudia was a cosmetologist, enjoyed walks and camping in the Sandias and Jemez Mountains and had many friends in Albuquerque. She was full of life and love and will be truly missed by all her knew her. Claudia will be laid to rest on a beautiful family plot under a newly planted evergreen tree on the family farm in Texas.

Chapman -- Joan Elizabeth Wallace Chapman, age 73, beloved mother and wife, passed into God's hands on March 24, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Walt, and their children and families, Mike, Beverly, and Billy of Santa Fe, and Cindy of Albuquerque; and by her brother, Ted Wallace of Fort Worth, Texas and all the Wallace families. Grandmother of six, her family was always most important in her life. She made people all around her feel a part of her family and opened her heart, home, and family to several foreign exchange students. Joan came to Santa Fe in 1966 with Walt to start their building company. She served as President of the Women's Division of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce for two terms, and was the first Women's Division President to serve on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She had a great love for travel, and animals. Throughout her life she was surrounded by the love of her dogs and cats. No one was ever turned away at her door. She shared her love and laughter with all those around her and wanted nothing but happiness for all she cared for. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church. Interment will take place on Friday, March 28, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Salvation Army. Chavez -- Mr. Jose D. F. Chavez, 78, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on March 24, 2003. Mr. Chavez is the beloved husband of 57 years to Mrs. Nora Chavez. Mr. Chavez is also survived by seven daughters, Helena Maez, Linda Valdez and husband, Antonio, Rose Huerta and husband, Tomas, Mary Ann Torres and husband, Bennie, Dolores Sanders and husband, John, Norma Sena and Dorothy Chavez; nine sons, Navor Chavez and wife, Margaret, Ernesto Chavez and wife, Ruby, Joe Chavez and wife, Margie, Richard Chavez and wife, Carmen, Tim Chavez and wife, Terry, Mark Chavez and wife, Angie, Bobby Chavez and wife, Nina, Martin Chavez and wife, Desiree, Andrew Chavez and wife, Clara; four sisters, Martina Lucero, Della Marquez, Tome Lopez and husband, Alfonso and Betty"Belen" Hermosillo; one brother, Pablo Chavez; 40 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Chavez was a member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church and a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. Mr. Chavez was in the European Theater, battle campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Rhine Land and Central Europe. Mr. Chavez received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater, Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. A visitation for Mr. Chavez will be Friday evening after 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna NW with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Terry Luna. A final Visitation will be Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont NE at Clairmont with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. A Committal Service will follow at Mt. Emerson -- Anne Marie, 60, formally of Binghamton, NY, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2003. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, John A. Emerson of Albuquerque; her sons, Eric Emerson of Huntersville, NC and Michael Emerson of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren, Ryan and Kayla Emerson; sisters, Mary Hawley and Jo Anne Hurchla; brother, Jim Duffy; brother-in-law, Frederick Emerson Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. Fitzgerald -- Reverend Father John Watson Fitzgerald Jr., a priest of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, passed to his eternal reward Sunday, March 23, 2003. Fr. Fitzgerald was the son of John Watson Fitzgerald Sr. and Mary Catherine McMahon. He was born May 31, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. He is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Schneeberger of Rockford, Illinois; a brother, Robert (Mac) Fitzgerald of Detroit, Michigan; three nieces; four nephews; and also a longtime friend and nurse, Cecile Powell. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended Marquette University High School. After high school, he attended Maryknoll Apostolic College in Pennsylvania. He then entered the University of Arizona in Tucson. In June of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He served in the European, African and Middle East theaters. After his Honorable Discharge from the service in March of 1946, he started his studies for the priesthood. He entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Santa Fe. He continued his major seminary studies at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado. He received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from St. Thomas Seminary. He was ordained May 23, 1953 by Archbishop Edwin Vincent Byrne in St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His first Solemn High Mass was celebrated on his 32nd birthday, May 31, 1953 in St. Roberts Church in Shorewood, Wisconsin. Father's first assignment was to return as an English teacher at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Santa Fe. Later, he was assigned as one of the founding faculty of St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque. After teaching, he was assigned to be the first and founding pastor of Holy Child Parish in Tijeras. Father later served for 15 years as the Archdiocesan Director of Propagation of Faith. Father also served in several other parochial assignments. Father's last assignment was as a hospital chaplain in Albuquerque, which ministry he continued long into his retirement. Vigil and Rosary will be celebrated Thursday, March 27th at Queen of Heaven Parish at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday, March 28th, at 10:00 a.m., Queen of Heaven Parish, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE. Miller -- E. Merle Miller, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977 and former resident of Bartlesville, OK, died Sunday, March 23, 2003. He is survived by his children, Mary Ann Miller of Cumming, GA; Betty Jean Blue and husband, David Williams of Edmond, OK; Rita Marie Miller and husband, Larry Erickson of Beaverton, OR; John Patrick Miller and wife, Lynn of Shelton, CT; Henry Harvey Miller of Firestone, CO; and Lori Lea Butler of Albuquerque; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, Louis Miller of El Paso, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda H. Miller and son, James Miller. Upon graduation from college, he was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company and retired from the same. They moved to Bartlesville, OK in 1947 and raised their family there. Phillips moved them to London, England in 1972. Merle and Frieda relocated to Albuquerque in 1977 where he retired. Mr. Miller was involved with the Stamp Club. He and his wife enjoyed playing bridge. He was a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Moya -- Jacob Moya, 15, passed away March 22, 2003. He was a resident of Bernalillo and attended Rio Rancho High School. Palanker -- Dr. Harold K. Palanker, 89, a resident of Albuquerque since January 1, 1979, died Monday, March 24, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice Palanker of Albuquerque; daughters, Maureen Leshendok and husband, Thomas of Reno, NV, Robin Palanker and Leonard Crofoot of Los Angeles, CA, Leslie Palanker and husband, J. F. Dufresne of Paris, France and Abby Gail Palanker of Los Angeles, CA; and grandsons, Joseph Dufresne and Luc Dufresne of Paris, France. He was born in Romania and immigrated to the United States in 1930 at the age of 17. Dr. Palanker attended Medical School at the University of Buffalo where he graduated in 1940. He served in the United States Army as a Major in the Medical Corps during WWII. Upon his return, he completed his residency at Buffalo General Hospital. He met Janice Powsner and they were married on May 9, 1948 during his residency. He then went into private practice and was also Full Attending in Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Buffalo and Associate Attending and Active Service Teaching Division at Buffalo General Hospital. He was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Buffalo, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Palanker served as president of the Buffalo Surgical Society, the Western New York Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Maimonides Medical Society. He retired from private practice in 1979 to move to Albuquerque where he was connected to the Veteran's Hospital in the Ambulatory Care Unit for eight years. He was an avid golfer and member of the Four Hills Country Club. Dr. Palanker loved playing the violin and also spoke several languages. Memorial Services will be held Friday, March 28, 2003, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will take place in a private ceremony at Congregation Albert Cemetery in Fairview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charity of your choice. Saavedra -- Mr. Gilbert L. Saavedra died Monday, March 24, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 74. Mr. Saavedra was a U.S. Army Veteran. He is preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Saavedra and son, Luciano Saavedra. Mr. Saavedra is survived by his children, Frances Sanchez and husband, Cris, Gilbert Saavedra, Raymond Saavedra, Theresa Becerra, Bernie Loranca and Chris Saavedra; brother, Isidro Saavedra; sister, Flora Sanchez; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral Services for Mr. Saavedra will be held on Friday at San Jose Catholic Church where the Service will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Sanchez -- Alberto F."Bert" Sanchez, Jr, age 89, died Monday, March 24, in Amarillo, Texas. He was born in his grandparents home on July 30, 1914 in Clayton, New Mexico to Alberto F. Sanchez, Sr. and Natividad (Romero) Sanchez. A lifetime resident of Union County, Alberto attended school in the western Union County community of Barney until the sixth grade when he transferred to Clayton. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1932 and managed a ranch and store for his uncle Tobias Sanchez. On May 1, 1934 he married Adelina A. (Garcia) Sanchez in Clayton and she preceded him in death on December 31, 1980. Alberto owned and operated Robinett's Grocery store and a Texaco gas station for several years. He also worked for the State of New Mexico's Motor Transportation Department where he retired as a supervisor for the Clayton Port of Entry. Bert was not only a hard worker, but he served his community well. He held two publically elected offices serving on the Clayton Municipal School District Board as well as being a council member for the Town of Clayton. He belonged to several civic organizations having been a member of the Clayton's Lion Club for over 35 years. He was also a member of the Coronado Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a board member of the Retired Public Employees of New Mexico and former President of the NM Senior Coalition. He was a lifetime member on the advisory board for the Eastern New Mexico Area on Aging, A position he was appointed to by then Governor Gary Carruthers. Alberto was a member of the Union County Medical Board and former Chairman of the Union County Home Health Care Agency. Bert was chairman of the Salvation Army's Project Unite which helped low income elders pay utility bills. He was also a member of the Union County Historical Society and in 1995 he received the Distinguished Pioneer Award from the Clayton Union County Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his wife and parents, Albert was also preceded in death by an infant son, Alberto F. Sanchez, III; two brothers, Malaquias Sanchez and Alfredo Felix Sanchez; and by two sisters, Carlota Sanchez and Anita Park Sanchez. Alberto is survived by two sons, Ricardo T. Bolk and her husband, Bill of Amarillo, Texas; one sister, Veronica Martinez of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27, and Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 28, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Clayton with Fr. James Vance, officiating. Senseney -- Robert J. Senseney, born May 14, 1923, made his passage on Thursday, March 20, 2003 following a heroic struggle with cancer. Robert's life was a celebration of determination, courage, vision, intellectualism, and phenomenal ingenuity. He was a devoted husband, a loyal and revered father, and a playful attentive grandfather. He served in combat in WWII and influenced many lives during his 25-year teaching career at Jefferson Jr. High. Robert was a man of remarkable talent - there wasn't a question he couldn't answer or a problem he couldn't solve. No project was beyond his ability. If it could be built, he could build it. Above all he was a teacher in all aspects of his life. He was a true renaissance man. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, JoAnn, their four children, Ronnelle Browning and husband, Dave of Washington, Jan Lemme and husband, Frederick of Texas, Robert Senseney, II, and wife, Nan of Wyoming, Jeff Sensensey and wife, Brenda of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Matthew Browning, Nicholas Browning, Frederick Lemme, Jr., Brooke Revels; brother, Gary Senseney of Connecticut; and sister-in-law, Marie Loudner of Oklahoma with whom he was very close. Robert will be missed tremendously for his guidance, creativity, wisdom, wit and enthusiasm. Our hearts are forever full from the inspiration of his rich and well-lived life. He was an artist and worked for Rodgers and CO. for many years. Ziegler -- Carl T. Ziegler, 78, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, March 24, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Norma Ziegler; children, Maryland Pattison, Carl B. Ziegler, Kristie Eaton and husband, Gil, Cathy Humble and husband, Mike, Denise Cox and husband, Buddy and Terry Glaspie; grandchildren, Jason Pattison, Bryan Eaton and wife, Christine, Daniel Ziegler, Angela Eaton, Kimberly Eaton, John Alan Glaspie, Courtney Cox, Alexandra Cox, Carl Glaspie, Sarah Glaspie and Mackenzie Cox; one great-grandchild, Jordan Cassidy Eaton; two brothers, Leland Ziegler and wife, Lou and Glen Ziegler and wife, Louise; two sisters, Eva Miller and husband, Norman and Emily Deeter and husband, Jim; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Carl was a WWII Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He was fleet superintendent for S & V Trucking and Schwartzman Packing Co. and owner/operator of Ziegler's Truck Repair. Carl was a Master Mason and member of Temple Lodge #6 AF & AM, and the Scotish Rite. He was well known throughout New Mexico in both the trucking and cattle industry.
