CAIRD, BRUCE Age 84, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Born in Geneva, Ohio, Bruce came to reside in Albuquerque in 1935 at the age of five. Affectionately called "Mr. Albuquerque" by a client, Bruce was well known for his real estate career that spanned more than five decades. He knew the business from the ground up, working first in the construction industry as a young engineering student. Bruce quickly became a construction manager for Dale Bellamah who developed the NE heights Princess Jeanne Subdivision in the 1950's. Before opening his own real estate company with partner Ed Norris in 1963, he built homes in Santa Fe with builder Ralph Brutsche, also a life long friend. A licensed Realtor since 1957, Bruce held the #9 realtor license issued in New Mexico. He had a passion for real estate and was recognized by clients and peers for his professionalism, humor, and keen mind. He offered "solutions for people in real estate" and specialized in many arenas from residential sales in the north valley to commercial brokerage and development projects in Albuquerque, Corrales, and Placitas. One of his most creative accomplishments was to sell the volcanoes on Albuquerque's Westside Bond Ranch to the City of Albuquerque. He also served the city he loved as a founding member of Concerned Citizens, a watchdog group that critiqued city government. His provocative editorials often appeared in the Albuquerque Tribune. Bruce was a board member of TVI, now CNM, and a longtime member of the National Federation of Independent Business. Devoted as he was to public life, Bruce's family was his lasting pride and joy. He was married to Mary Landwehr of Jefferson City, Mo., for over sixty years. He was the beloved patriarch of the Caird clan including five children: Ian Caird (Roxanna), Kim Caird-Espinosa (Peter), Caitlin Robinson (Patrick), Andrew Caird, and Sarah Caird; as well as nine grandchildren (Ethan Aronson, Aaron, and Maya Espinosa, Kurtis, Kyle, and Kelly Robinson, Thane, Rachel, and Alexander Caird); and two great-grandchildren (Finnegan and Harper Robinson.) Bruce modeled the values of the "great generation" such as hard work, integrity, a love of excellence, and a zest for life. A voracious reader and lover of history, his personal hero was Abraham Lincoln. Bruce loved sailing and traveling with Mary from San Carlos, Mexico and the lakes of northern New Mexico to Vancouver Island and the San Juan Islands of Canada. Bruce lived life to the full and embodied a warrior spirit. After a prolonged battle with heart disease, he died February 25, 2014 at his home of congestive heart failure. He will be remembered for his integrity to family and to the community. A Memorial Service in celebration of Bruce's life will be held Monday, March 31, 2014, 2:00 p.m., at FRENCH Lomas. Please visit our online guestbook for Bruce at www.FrenchFunerals.com. "If life was found to be agreeable so then should death be found. Both come from the same master." Michelangelo. PIERCE, CHRISTOPHER MILLER Christopher Miller Pierce, 74 years old, passed away unexpectedly on March 23, 2014, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carole Pierce; his daughter, Mikaela Pierce, and daughter-in-law, Priscilla Gonzalez; his son, Brendan Pierce, daughter-in-law, Lisa Hill-Pierce, and young grandsons, Henry and Theo; his brother-in-law, David Rogers and sister-in-law, Donna Rogers; Chance, his beloved Golden Retriever; and numerous friends in New Mexico and Kentucky (especially the Bolins and Hylecks). Chris was raised in Albuquerque and raised by two artist parents, Florence Miller Pierce and Horace Towner Pierce. He graduated from UNM with a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Fine Art. He and Carole moved as a young couple for a teaching job to Berea, Kentucky, planning on returning to NM in a few short years; however, they quickly met their best friends and became part of the strong art community, so lived in Berea until two years ago when they returned to Albuquerque. Chris was a Berea Community High School art teacher and Berea College art education professor, and a jeweler, sculptor and painter. He was eccentric, funny (sometimes not on purpose), compassionate, and ever curious about the world; even as his health faded rapidly, he kept a journal filled with questions, observations, and quotes from favorite writers and philosophers. He was notorious for losing keys, hats, lunchboxes, gloves, (even a camera on a Thailand beach on the first day of his trip), for getting lost, for beating up his truck, and for getting stuck in an art department dumpster when looking for possible recycled treasure. Chris and Carole gave their children a life full of love, support, laughter, art, pets, books, drawing, reading, writing, tinkering, cooking elaborate meals, growing enormous gardens, and being good to the people in their lives. Chris was definitely a different type of person, and his family and many friends are lucky to have known and loved him, and heartbroken that he is gone.

POLITO, FLORENCE (PHYLLIS) M. 78, returned to the Lord and a long awaited reunion with her beloved husband Gene on Sunday, March 23, 2014. Phyllis was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on January 22, 1936 and relocated to Albuquerque, NM in 1960. She then relocated to Las Vegas, NV in 2011. Phyllis suffered from numerous illnesses over the past 15 years but through the grace of God, the love of her family and her own personal strength she managed to live as normal a life as possible. She was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and giving to those less fortunate when she could. Phyllis was known by many as "prayer central" because of her diligence in praying for those in need. Most recently, while living in Las Vegas she was able to enjoy shopping, performances by some of her favorite entertainers from the past, and new dining experiences. On very rare occasions, she would throw a few dollars into the slot machines in memory of Gene. While in Albuquerque, Phyllis was a long-time member of John XXIII Catholic Community and upon arriving in Las Vegas a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Community. SCHULER, RICHARD H. (DICK), COL. (USA, RET.) Col. (USA, ret.) Richard (Dick) H. Schuler completed his baptismal journey and joined his wife, Irma, in the presence of God on March 23, 2014. Born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 8, 1916, he lived fully a long and abundant life of service, leadership and love. He had a powerful intellect, graduating first from the University of Illinois with a BS in chemistry, and thereafter obtaining an MA in nuclear physics from Columbia University and an MA in international affairs from George Washington University, as well as graduating from the Army War College and the Command and General Staff College. Integrity and honor were integrated into his being through his faith, his family, his years as a Boy Scout, and his 30 years of active duty service in the U.S. Army. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word, with a lively sense of humor and an abiding concern for others. In 1940, Dick joined the Army. After training at Camp Hulen (where it rained the entire time), he was assigned to the Army's only Intelligence Battery, at Pearl Harbor. He was there on that fateful day of December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. He recounted that experience in a memoir he published under the title, "From Rockaway Beach to Pearl Harbor," written with close friend and writer, Dyne Macha, Ph.D. In 1943, between his assignments in Hawaii and in the European theater of World War II, he married his college sweetheart, Irma. Even though he was late to the wedding (he was playing baseball), they were married 70 years before her death in 2013, in as devoted and magical a marriage as could ever be imagined. In his years of military service, he was engaged in nuclear defense work, first at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, then as a staff assistant to the Committee for Atomic Energy, which was composed of renowned scientists that he came to know. In 1957, he became Chief of the Nuclear Weapons Branch, Atomic Division, of the Army's Office of the Chief of Research and Development, where he was responsible for the development of nuclear weapons systems and for which he was honored with the Army's Commendation Medal for displaying "extraordinary professional and scientific ability." Thereafter, he was the Chief of Tests of the Defense Atomic Support Agency (where he participated in the development of the U.S. position on the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty), the Missile and Radar Defense Commander for a guided missile command based in Nebraska (for which he was honored by the Governor as an Admiral of the Nebraska Navy), the Logistics Plans Officer for CINCPAC in Hawaii, and, finally, the Commandant of the Nuclear Weapons School, Sandia Base, NM. For his work in his last assignment, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. After his retirement from the Army in 1971, he worked at the UNM Cancer Center as its manager and for the Office of Emergency Preparedness in Albuquerque. Always athletic, played tennis until his eyesight failed when he was 86. Thirteen times with Irma and until they were well into their 80's, and occasionally with his daughter Alison Schuler, his son-in-law, Lyman Sandy, and his grandson, Theodore Schuler-Sandy, he hiked the depths of the Grand Canyon. He and Irma also enthusiastically supported numerous civic and arts activities and entertained effortlessly and often in New Mexico and in all the places they lived, benefitting their communities through their generosity and service. He described himself, accurately, as able to "communicate easily and effectively with people of all social and educational backgrounds," giving him a quality of leadership that led to deep concern for those under him and an equally deep respect for him from his subordinates. His was a life profoundly lived in every respect, his great gifts and his deep faith in God yielding greater gifts to his family, in service to his country, and to his communities and friends. Dick has joined, in the next and beautiful Life and in the presence of God, his wife, Irma, his parents, Ellen and Harry Schuler, and his son-in-law, Lyman Sandy, where, with them, he was surely welcomed. "Well done, good and faithful servant.Enter into the joy of your [Lord]." A service of celebration of Dick's life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Menaul NE, Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in Dick's memory be made to the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, 601 Eubank SE, Albuquerque, NM 87123, the Great Southwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 5841 Office Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 or St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112. STEBLETON, JANET CAROL Janet Carol Stebleton departed this life on March 23, 2014 in Albuquerque. She grew up in various locations around the country as her family moved with her father's jobs in various printing plants, eventually settling in Houston, TX in 1954. Very intelligent with a strong aptitude in the sciences, Janet pursued a career in nursing, graduating from the well regarded nursing program at Houston's Hermann Hospital in 1957. It was on a blind date that she met the love of her life, Lawrence Stebleton then a Student Navigator at Ellington Air Force Base. Following a whirlwind romance they were married December 26, 1957 and she began the gypsy life of a military wife as the family moved around the country with Lawrence's various assignments as an Officer in the US Air Force. Janet took a few years off from nursing when her children were young but returned to the profession in 1966, spending the next 46 years in various aspects of the profession and helping thousand of people along the way. She continually upgraded her knowledge in the field, earning first a B.S. in Nursing, followed by an M.S. and finally a Nurse Practitioner certification in the 1990's. After the family settled in New Mexico, Janet enjoyed a long and productive relationship with many local health care organizations, including Lovelace, St. Joseph's Presbyterian, and ABQ Health Partners. She also passed her knowledge on to others, teaching nursing at the University of Albuquerque, UNM, and TVI. Her favorite job was her last one as a Nurse Practitioner at the Southwest Center for Sleep medicine, working on the cutting edge of this relatively new field. Janet was a consummate volunteer, donating over 10,000 hours of her time working with the American Red Cross at Kirtland Air Force base teaching swimming to the members of hundreds of service families. She also served as a Water Safety and Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer training future teachers. Janet also volunteered within her adopted community of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, most notably on the effort that resulted in its 2010 Master Plan. A cat lover all her life, Janet was a strong supporter of cat rescue efforts in the Albuquerque area. Janet is survived by her loving husband, Lawrence; two sons; two grandchildren; and her wonderful rescue cat Shaney. The family would like to extend special appreciation to Jean Orosco for her support and help during Janet's illness. At Janet's request there will be no formal memorial service. She has been cremated and will be interred at the Old Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy at West Point, her husband's Alma Mater. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Janet's name to High Desert Cat Rescue & Adoption at: www.hdcra.org.

STUBBS, ERSKINE H. Erskine H. Stubbs, a resident of Albuquerque for 60 years and former prisoner of war, passed away on March 17, 2014. He was 93. He passed away in Orange Park, FL, in the loving care of his nephew Ellis McWilliams and spouse Macy. Known affectionately to his many friends as "Stubbs" and to family members as "Uncle Buddy", he was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served for 21 years. He was born on May 18, 1920 in Lumpkin, GA, to Henry and Lula Stubbs. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. A gifted marksman, he was selected to serve as the right waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator with the 44th Bomber Group (H) 66th Squadron of the 8th Air Force based in England. Following a mission on February 24, 1944, Stubbs' B-24 fought off over 40 German fighter planes while returning to England. Although 4 to 5 fighter planes were shot down, the B-24 was hit by enemy aircraft around 1:30 a.m. over Gotha, Germany and burst into flames. After bailing out, Stubbs landed in a snow-covered forest where he suffered a cracked neck and back. He and the pilot, 2nd Lt. Harold Etheridge, were captured by armed villagers. Lt. Etheridge reported that "They were quite abusive and made life miserable for Sgt. Stubbs because he could not raise his arms in surrender." A German witness reported that a policeman wanted to shoot Stubbs to end his suffering. As the villagers were threatening to kill the captives with pitchforks, an elderly German World War I veteran with a bushy white mustache rushed to the scene to protect the Americans. He pointed his rifle at the villagers and ordered the mob to disperse. "The old veteran saved our lives," Stubbs recalled. "The 24th of February, 1944 at times seems like only yesterday; at other times it is like a lifetime ago. There's no way to forget it - only some parts of it." During the next 18 months, Stubbs was among the 143,000 U.S. military personnel and civilians who were held captive by Germany or Japan during World War II. He was imprisoned at Stalag Luft IV Gross Tuchow in Prussia (now Tychowo, Poland) where prisoners experienced brutal cold in unheated huts, severe hunger, and harsh guards. The prisoners were later sent to the notorious Wobbelin Bei Lundwigslust concentration camp established by the SS in Germany. In the final months of the war, Stubbs and his fellow POWs were forced to march over 600 miles in extreme winter conditions to prevent them from being liberated by advancing allied armies. It was estimated that as many as 1,500 POWs from Stubbs' camp died during what came to be known as "The March." Stubbs said his long column of POWs marched 10 to 20 miles per day with little or nothing in the way of food, clothing, shelter or medical care. "We had to help each other," Stubbs said. "The stronger helped the weaker survive." The prisoners were finally repatriated on July 7, 1945. Like many POWs, Stubbs weighed about half his pre-war body weight. Stubbs survived hardships because he was a determined optimist, who always looked for the best in any situation. A cheerful and friendly man, Stubbs went on to serve a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force that included serving in Germany where he developed life-long friendships with German citizens. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1963, he served with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Albuquerque. Stubbs met the love of his life, Reba Thomas, while both served at Kirtland Air Force Base. They married in 1950 and established a permanent home in Albuquerque. Stubbs loved New Mexico and had a deep appreciation for the state's people, culture and beauty. He built second homes near Jemez Springs and Questa where many happy times were shared, especially fishing. A prolific reader, he had a keen interest in public affairs and life-long learning. He also was a Lobo fan and an outstanding cook, renowned for his fried trout and hush puppies. But Stubbs' hallmark was his love and appreciation of others. It was often said that Stubbs never met a stranger. Through his many acts of kindness and generosity, he enriched many lives whether it was by delivering gifts of groceries to elderly neighbors, helping others in need, or making charitable contributions. The grace of his good works will be sustained through the many lives that he touched. In addition to his nephew Ellis, Stubbs is survived by nephews Dr. William Swagerty, Roger Garvin, Fred Thomas and Charles Wood; nieces Nancy Anderson, Ann Marie Holder, Cristina Holder, Jessica Holder, Frances Kersey, Patricia Miller and Janet Sherwood; and 12 great-nephews and great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Reba, in 1990, and his loving sister, Bernice. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the American Ex-Prisoners of War Organization. His cremated remains will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. At his request, there will be no ceremony. Special thanks to the staff at Heartland Health Care Center in Orange Park, FL who provided friendship, compassion, dignity and quality care. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, you perform random acts of kindness towards others in Stubbs' memory or a donation to your favorite charity.
