GUSHARD, BERNICE JUANITA departed from this world on October 2nd, 2012. It was a beautiful Fall day that she got to spend out and about in the sunshine with her daughter Linda, and granddaughter Debby. Bernice was born in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Jessie Garland Lovett and Della Lee Gossett. She came into this world on December 20, 1922. She was a daughter, a wife, and a mother. She was a sister, and a friend. She married her sweetheart Donald Gushard on April 25, 1941. They were married for 50 years before his death in 1992. They were the perfect couple and together created a beautiful family. Bernice was never afraid to give you her opinion. She was a leader and a Matriarch. Bernice was a very talented artist. Over her lifetime she created many beautiful paintings. Most of which were of places she had traveled to with her adventurous husband. She would take the beauty she had seen and capture it flawlessly on canvas. Her mind was creative and she loved to quilt. She opened "The Quilting Nook" with her two daughters in the 1980's. She was gifted at what she did and she was reliable. Her small business thrived, as she made countless quilts for loved ones, family, and a large cliental. She loved to play Scrabble and was an excellent speller. She loved to jump in the travel trailer and go on extensive road trips with Don. She served her community through Cub scouts, Girl scouts, PTA, and many school activities throughout her children's lives. She also loved to write letters to politicians and various companies to try to get her voice heard, and make a difference. Bernice met with her dear friends, "The Fluffies" for 35 years. To carry such strong bonds of friendship throughout her lifetime is a testament to her loyalty, her steadfastness, and her devotion. She was a strong woman. When she set her mind to do something, it got done. She never shied away from standing up for what she believed in. She spent the last years of her life living in Utah with her daughter Linda. Rather she knew it or not, she was doing her final act of service, helping her daughter through the loss of her husband, teaching her patience, and unconditional love. When this final task was complete, the angels came and took her home, at long last, to her beloved Don. Survived by three children, Judith O'Connell, Donald (Jerry) Gushard (Becki), and Linda Bryde; grandchildren, Rebecca Meadows (Bill), Michael Gushard, Debby Marsh, Jerri Lynn Lucero (Miguel), Kimberly Armstrong (Mike), and Wade Green. She has five great-grandchildren, and one sister Shirley Van Ryzin (Jim). Preceded in death by her husband Donald Gushard; grandson Donald O'Connell; son-in-law Robert Bryde; sister Dolores Kelly; and brother Bill Simmons. Also survived by many dear friends and relatives. MCKINNEY, BARBARA S. Barbara peacefully passed on to a new life on October 1, 2012 after battling Parkinson's disease for the past five years. Barbara Ellen Salmon was born on January 2, 1936 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Morton and Nelle Salmon. She grew up in Fort Dodge and then attended Iowa State University where she met her future husband, David, during her freshman year. She graduated with a degree in home economics and accepted a teaching position at North Babylon, Long Island to be able to visit David while he completed his degree at the United States Military Academy. On June 14, 1959, David and Barbara were married in Fort Dodge. For the next four years, Barbara taught in Virginia, Alabama, and Hawaii when David's military assignments changed. Barbara taught in the Boston School System and at Waltham High School, while David attended Harvard Business School. Barbara and David started their family while David began his professional career, working at the University of Iowa. The family moved from Iowa to South Dakota, Indiana and then Idaho. Barbara stepped back from teaching while Michael and Katherine were young, resuming teaching as a substitute as the children were older. Barbara went back into full-time teaching at Palouse-Garfield High School in Palouse, WA teaching home economics classes while David worked at the University of Idaho. Barbara and David moved to New Mexico when David accepted a position at the University of New Mexico, and Barbara accepted a teaching appointment at New Futures School, an APS Alternative School for Parenting and Pregnant Teens where she taught for 12 years. The challenges of meeting each state's different teaching certification requirements seemed overwhelming at times, but she always felt rewarded by having the opportunity to be in the classroom. She loved young people and had a way of connecting with them with compassion. Many years after she retired, former students would still come up and give her a big hug and thank her for her positive impact on their lives. She cherished the friendships she had with her co-teachers and staff. In retirement, many of them became even more important to her. Above all of her professional successes, Barbara never lost sight of what she considered her primary life's mission - her family and raising her two children. She felt her greatest accomplishments in life would be measured in the happiness, success and achievements of her family, her children and their children. Preceding in death were her parents, Morton and Nelle Salmon and her granddaughter, Abby Elizabeth Creagan. Surviving Barbara are David, her husband of 53 years; her son, Michael McKinney and wife Lisa of Kennewick, WA; daughter, Katherine Creagan and husband Scott of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Meagan and Lauren McKinney of Kennewick; grandson, Matthew Creagan; and granddaughter, Grace Creagan of Albuquerque. Also surviving is Barbara's sister, Mary Gourley of Dallas and her family; as well as David's two brothers and two sisters. Barbara was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. The family is extremely grateful for the loving care provided by the Presbyterian Home HealthCare physicians, nurses and therapists and the caregivers with Home Instead Senior Care. Cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial Service celebrating her life on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo Del Norte NE, Albuquerque, 87122. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice. SHUSTER, SANDRA ELEENE Passed away in her sleep on Sunday, September 30, 2012. Sandy was a graduate of Hobbs High School who came to Albuquerque to study literature at the University of New Mexico. While enrolled there, she met and married Don B. Shuster, whose naval service took them to Pensacola, then to Guam, and later to Virginia Beach, Spain, England and (less glamorously) to Lubbock, Texas. Their world travels took them to three continents, filling them with stories that continue to echo through Sandy's house after her death. Don was frequently deployed for long stretches of time, a hardship that Sandy bore with grace. When Don retired from the Navy after 20 years of service, they returned home with their three children to Albuquerque. Sandy was a devoted mother to Kate, Will and Matthew Shuster. Her husband Don passed away in 1998 to great sadness in the family. Sandy worked hard to keep her family together, lighting luminarias every Christmas and keeping everyone entertained with her notoriously wicked sense of humor and her endless curiosity about current events. Those who knew her found her to be a true, loyal, lifetime friend. Sandy was a voracious reader with a lifelong love of learning who came to know the library workers on a first-name basis and whose retirement seemed powered by histories and mysteries. She was known for her interest in eccentric hats. She is survived by her mother, Catherine Dulaney, her brother Jack Dulaney, her daughter, Kate Shuster, her sons, Will Shuster and Matthew Shuster, her son-in-law Stephen Stetson, her brothers-in-law Mark Shuster, Tom Shuster, and Paul Shuster, her nieces Grace, Kathleen and Jessica, and her nephews Ben, Jon, Robert and Sam. She will be interred next to her husband Don at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Thursday, October 11th at 11:15 AM. The family requests that donations in Sandy's honor support her beloved San Pedro Library. Checks should be made out to Friends of the Public Library and specify that the donation is for the San Pedro Library. They can be mailed to P.O. Box 26657, Albuquerque, NM, 87125. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to . Please visit our online guest book for Sandra at www.RememberTheirStory.com FRENCH 1111 University Blvd NE 505-843-6333
