BRAEUTIGAM -- Cordie Braeutigam, 73, a 15 year resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on May 16, 2011 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She is survived by a daughter, Leann Frazer and husband Chris of Rio Rancho; sons, Raymond C. Braeutigam and wife Gayla of Albuquerque, and Franklin W. Braeutigam and wife Billie of Fruita, CO; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Mitchell of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Barbara Metcalf of Ohio and Margie Patterson of Kentucky; former husband, Franklin A. Braeutigam of Fredericksburg, TX. She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond (R.L.) Mitchell, Arnold (A.L.) Mitchell, sisters, Bobby Whitehead, Kate Taylor. Cordie was born in Cleburne, TX. CALKINS -- Carolyn Dean Calkins, 75, a resident of Belen, passed away on May 14, 2011. Carolyn was born in Hale, Mo. On June 28, 1935 to David John and Ruth May Williams. She graduated from Grants High School in 1953 where she was a majorette and taught Home Economics during her senior year. She was the Past Worthy Matron of the Belen Chapter of Eastern Star, a Girl Scout Leader, member of P.E.O., and owned a drapery and seamstress business for 30 years. An excellent baker, she made wedding cakes for many if her friends and neighbors. And even with her severe arthritis, she volunteered at Lovelace hospital to help with the care of patients. She loved to listen and dance to "Big Band" music, as well as being an avid square dancer. She also loved to travel and go on adventures with her family and friends. Carolyn will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl Ralph Calkins, of 53 years. She is survived by her twin sister, Maralyn J. Nelson of Albuquerque, NM; and her three children, David Neil Calkins and wife, Julia of Phoenix, Arizona, Donna Nadine Calkins of Belen, NM, and Ralph Lee Calkins and wife, Laurie of Kasilof, Alaska; and granddaughter Carolyn Irina Calkins. Services will be held at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, 113 La Luna Pl., Rio Communities at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 19. COWART -- Janet Carter Cowart On May 15, 2011 after a valiant struggle, Janet Carter Cowart succumbed to cancer in Marietta, Georgia. A native New Mexican, she graduated valedictorian from Albuquerque High School in 1969, earned a BA from the University of Albuquerque, and a MBA from the Robert O. Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico. She was a novelist under the nom de plume Carly Laine, a brilliant computer programmer, a CPA, and an inspired jewelry designer. She is survived by her beloved husband, Shannon; children, Laurel (Josh), Annamarie, and Michael; grandchildren, Cole, Brady, and Wyatt; and brother, Douglas Carter (Betty Jo). DOEING -- Carl Paul Doeing, 69, a noted lifelong social work agency administrator, succumbed in Albuquerque on May 13, 2011 at Lovelace Hospice Care after a courageous fight against kidney failure. Carl Doeing was born in Ohio on Feb. 2, 1942, the son of Dr. Carl T. and Dorothy Marie Doeing. He attended St. Theresa Grade School and Parish, as well as Central Catholic High School, all in Springfield. In 1960, he graduated from secondary school at Gilmour Academy, a college prep school in Gates Mills, OH, and later earned the B.S Degree in Sociology/ Psychology in 1964 and the Master's in Social Work in 1970 from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. Carl was elected President of the Residence Hall Council, giving the student body's keynote address at the grand opening of a new 15-story dormitory in 1963. He served for six years in the Ohio Air National Guard After a stint working at a social services agency in Columbus, OH, he and his family moved to New Mexico in 1974, where his parents had retired. For many years, he served as Executive Director of the Family and Children's Services, Inc., a private mental health agency in Albuquerque, before successfully taking on the challenge of a bankrupt agency in Tampa, FL from 1995-1999. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and several social work professional organizations. He was a quiet, humble, and intellectual man, in his later years enjoying the company of his friends and pet dogs, teaching several adjunct classes at the University of New Mexico, skiing, and being the primary caregiver for his late mother in Albuquerque. Surviving him are his daughter, Amanda Doeing Fata, of South Ridging, VA, and son-in-law, Daniel Hall Fata, and two grandchildren, Zachary Daniel Fata, 8, and William Christopher Fata, 6; a step-daughter, Jane Gillespi, and husband, Bruce, and step-granddaughter, Anna Grace Gillespi, of Charlotte, NC; his brother of choice, James Anastasi, MD, of Los Angeles. ESTRADA -- Carol G. Estrada, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 2000, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Tulio Estrada of Albuquerque; children, Patty Estrada and husband, John Druckrey of New Orleans, LA, Tina Estrada Stacy and husband Mark Stacy of Durham, NC, Dan Estrada and wife Debbie of Albuquerque, Vicky Estrada-Bustillo and husband Juan Bustillo of Albuquerque, and Nancy Moore and husband Guy Moore of Bacliff, TX; grandchildren, Reuben Druckrey, Bryan Stacy, Andrea Stacy, Nicolas Griffin Estrada, Savannah Bustillo, Julian Bustillo, Katalina Crawford, Clayton Crawford and David Moore; and one great-granddaughter Natalie Keenan. GARCIA -- Daniel M. Garcia, 27, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2011. He is survived by his parents: Gerald and Celina Garcia; sister: Susan Garcia; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Daniel was an avid fisher at the San Juan River. GRANT -- Rudy Grant was born October 28, 1961 in Garden Grove, CA. He passed away Monday, May 16, 2011 at the age of 49. Rudy worked in Construction for 25 years. He was a member of the Free Masons Albuquerque 60, the Ballut Abyad Shriners and the M.G.W (Mason's Doing God's Work), where he diligently and proudly served. For the past five years, Rudy was active in the Azayim, the Mini-Clinic and the Shrine Hospital in Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orlando Roy and Tillie Grant and by his brother, Edmund Grant. Rudy is survived by his loving family; his sisters, Judy Muniz and husband Tony, Cruzita Martinez and husband Tony and Frances Grant; brothers, his twin brother Ray Grant, Henry Grant and wife Lucy, Andy Grant, Albert Grant, Orlando Roy Grant Jr. and wife Jody, Rick Grant, Arthur Grant and wife Linda, Al Cisneros and wife Theresa; as well as many other nieces nephews, cousins, other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. HOLMES -- Robert C. Holmes, 87, passed away May 10, 2011. Born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, he was a Rio Rancho resident for the past 23 years. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 32 years and two sons, Steve and Mark of California. He is also survived by Betty's children: Judith Schnell of Albuquerque, Christina and Sarah of Phoenix, AZ, Merry of Bellingham, WA, James of Odessa, TX, and Martin of Dillon, MT. He was preceded in death by a twin sister and five brothers. Bob was a World War II veteran, U.S. Army, European Theater and he was one of the "Greatest Generation." He retired from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA. He was a member of the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed hockey and basketball and having lively discussions about sports. He attended Calvary Chapel and loved the Lord. JAMES -- Jerrold Ross James, 77, born December 24, 1933, passed away May 15, 2011. A life-long resident of Albuquerque, Jerry worked on construction projects across the city. After retirement, he enjoyed wood-working and furniture-making. He built his own lake-view home in Eagle Nest, NM, where he and his wife of 38 years, Gail, enjoyed spending time with family. JENKS -- Florence Jenks blessed our lives with her genuine caring, warmth, humor, and courageous free spirit. Florence passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 15 surrounded by family. Born on August 22, 1929 in Philadelphia, Florence was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Goldie Ovrutsky; and her brother, Isadore Ovrutsky. KRAYE -- Howard Kraye, 70, a resident of Albuquerque since 1986, went home to be with his Savior on Saturday, May 14, 2011. LANE -- Lena D. Lane, 92, a life-long resident of New Mexico, died on Sunday, May 15, 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Freda Woods of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Jody Lee Curry and husband, Walter of Phoenix, AZ, Billy D. Doty and wife, Jennece of Phoenix, AZ, and Shalmarie Cooley and husband, Larry of Peralta, NM; 6 great-grandchildren, Clifford and Matthew Curry, Casey, Kirbye and Lane Doty, and Laramie Cooley; and other relatives and friends. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Lane in 1976. She was born on September 3, 1918 in Dawson, NM and spent her childhood in the Raton, NM area. Lena met Fred, a cowboy passing through from Texas, and they were married December 12, 1936. She loved to crochet, knit, and garden. Lena was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. LEACH -- Kathryn Dorothy Leach, 86, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 9, 2011. She is survived by her son, Brian Michael Leach of CA; daughters-in-law, Patricia Jean Leach of CA and Patricia Louise Leach of FL; one granddaughter, Cathleen Maura Leach of Japan; and other relatives and friends. Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Franklin Leach; her two sons, Mark Patrick Leach and Bret Terrance Leach; and her sister, Helen Hubbard. She was born on September 18, 1924 in Grand Valley, CO to Carl and Marjorie von Rosenberg. She spent most of her childhood in Glenwood Springs and Parachute, CO. After high school she attended the University of Colorado where she graduated with a degree in English. It was while there that she met Jack and they were married on June 19, 1946 in Miami, FL. Jack was in the Marine Corp and they spent eight years in Japan after WWII. They then returned to the United States and they resided in Berkeley, CA and Monterey, CA where Kathy taught elementary school. Kathy was very active in the League of Women Voters and the Alliance Francais. She was an avid reader, walker, and bridge player and loved to travel the world. Kathy was a life-long student of French, was also fluent in Spanish, and spoke Japanese. She and Jack were also active in the International Gourmet Couples Club. Kathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service is pending. LINN -- Barbara Linn, 80, passed away on May 13, 2011. Barbara was born in Amarillo, Texas on August 3, 1930 to Elmor Dale and Bonnie Belle McCullough. She married Kenneth Linn in Amarillo on June 24, 1950 which was the beginning of 60 wonderful years together. Barbara was active in PEO, an honorary lifetime member of the PTA, and established the first elementary school library in Amarillo. She was an avid reader, knitted countless sweaters and afghans and donated many of them to fundraisers and various charities. She took great enjoyment from her family, bridge clubs and her lifelong friendships. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Linn. She is survived by three daughters, Linda Key Shepard and her husband, Jim of Albuquerque, NM, Laurel Jones and husband, Jay of Shallowater, TX, Lisa Clements and husband, Bill of Katy, TX; a son, Kendall Linn of Duluth, MN; one brother, Dale McCullough and wife, Martha of Katy, TX; a niece, Debbie "Scooter" Ross and husband, Myron of Spicewood, TX; ten grandchildren; and one great- granddaughter. LONG -- Cyril (Cy) Long, 86, left this earth, Sunday, May 15, 2011, but his spirit will forever be with his children and grandchildren. Cy was born on January 25, 1925 in Lake Park, Iowa, one of eight sons. He served in the U S Army Air Corp during WWII in North Africa, Italy and Austria. When he returned home, he and Lucille were married. He attended the University of Iowa and as their family grew and grew, they decided to make their home in Albuquerque. Cy spent many years in the institutional food distribution business and also equipment leasing business. His children's well being and education were always his primary concern, so he volunteered in Church activities, scouting, athletics, P.T.A., etc. Cy was also very active in the Knights of Columbus, serving as district deputy and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree. He was preceded in death by his eldest and youngest sons, Gregory and David and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucille; three brothers; eight children Gail Karrer, Cheryl Shaw, Gary (Mary), Jeff, Dan, Beth (Mark) Head, Chris (Sherri), Teresa (Robert) Chavez; 19 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. He is survived by his two daughters, Tammy and Cynthia; son, Norman Lovato; step-son, Joe Pena; and his borthers, Robert, Anthony, Joe, Alex; and sister, Christine. MARRAZZO -- Angelina Marrazzo, 101 years old, left this life on Sunday, May 15, 2011. Angelina was born Angelina DeCandio in New York on April 20, 1910. She married John Marrazzo in 1935, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, John and his wife Deborah; her three grandchildren, Michael and his wife Berenice, Alana and her fiance Gene, Meghan and her fiance Drew; three great grandchildren, Patrick, Cainan, and Mathias. Angelina moved to Albuquerque to live with John and Deborah in 1975. She has now gone home to heaven to dance with her husband - now they can both hear the music. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5415 Fortuna Road, NW. on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. She will be interred with her husband in New York in the next few weeks. MORGAN -- Rand Thomas Morgan, January 31, 1964 - May 13, 2011, 47 years young. "Always with me, Always with you". Two years after the devastating diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's Disease, Rand Morgan was gently and peacefully relieved of his suffering on the morning of Friday, May 13, 2011. ALS may have ravaged his body, but it could not break his spirit. Rand was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, and graduated from Sandia High School. Loved and admired by many, Rand was a stand-up guy, always striving to do the right thing. Rand received his Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Biology at NMSU and had great respect for the natural environment and the beauty of New Mexico. He worked at the NM-DOT for ten years and received many awards and commendations for his service before having to retire due to his illness. An avid golfer and hunter, Rand was an awesome son, a devoted brother, a sincere friend, a loyal husband and a loving father. Rand is survived by his wife of 20 years, Marilee Morgan; his two children, Shennon Andrew Morgan and Emma Nicole Morgan; his very sweet grandmother, Edith Mable Flowers; parents, Clifford Owen Morgan and Elizabeth Duran-Morgan, and Cathy Lattimer; and sisters, Cara Marie Morgan and Kayla Catherine Morgan. QUESNELL -- Virgil Euclide Quesnell passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at home surrounded by his family after a full life. He was born and raised in Mentor, Minnesota, but relocated his family to New Mexico in 1961 and has been a Peralta resident for 45 years. Virgil was a member of Local Union 455 (Minnesota) and Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 412 (New Mexico) for over 50 years. He and his wife, Lu Quesnell, founded the Bosque Quadrillos Square Dancing Club in 1969. The World War II veteran was a member of the United States Navy from 1942-1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Peter Herb Quesnell; brother, Edmund Quesnell; and grandson, Scott Davis. Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Lu Quesnell; children, Linda Davis and her husband, Penn, Mike Quesnell, Eva Quesnell, and Susie Quesnell and her partner George Riley; grandchildren, Penny Davis, Sarah Quesnell and Katie Quesnell; great-grandchildren, Andrew Denas, Christopher McKee, and Seth Davis; and sister-in-law, Maxine Sanders. REED -- Robert G. "Bobby" Reed, 79, departed this earth on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque after a brief illness. Bobby is survived by sisters, Marian Clayton, Shirley Harty and Jacquelyn Buckhanan; nephews, Michael Clayton, Roderick Clayton, Mark Harty, David Harty, Steven Buckhanan and Shawn Buckhanan; and nieces, Jan Soloman and Marsha Silva, and numerous other relatives and friends. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Reed and Juanita Lowery. Bobby was born in Springfield, MO and was a longtime resident of Albuquerque and Los Angeles, CA. Bobby served honorably in three branches of the United States Military, and served in Europe during the 1940's. He loved jazz music, was a self-taught musician and was a sought after dancing partner. Bobby had a vibrant personality, and was a gracious and humble man. In recent years, Bobby was a resident of Paloma Blanca Nursing Home, where he was loved by everyone. RICHARDSON -- Gary Lee Richardson A unique, generous, loving, and brilliant man passed away May 12, 2011. Gary Lee Richardson, husband of Mary, father of Bridgette (Ron), Troy (Jessica) and Katie (Tony), "Papa" of Ivory, Ezra, Miette, Mikey, Addie, and Gracie, brother of Alan (Carol) and son of Clifton and Virginia Richardson. Gary also has two cousins, Sadie Mann (Tom) and Walter LaFleur III (Rebecca). Gary has been an excellent friend to many others. He is now sharing his counsel and energy elsewhere. He and his wife and soul mate, Mary lived an honest, passionate, giving, creative, and love filled life together in Los Lunas since they were married in 1977. They were inseparable on earth and will continue to be so in spirit. He and Mary raised their family in the home they designed and built themselves. In addition to being a Civil Engineer, he was a blacksmith, a vintner,a problem solver, a caregiver, a voracious reader, a welder, and a humorous gentleman. He enjoyed working with Mary at his company, Metric Corporation and working on various old vehicles. The 1962 Corvette was his latest passion. Gary was born and raised in Tucumcari, New Mexico and received his Masters in Civil Engineering at New Mexco State University in 1972. He was preceded in death by his father Clifton; and his grandparents; and aunts and unlcles. STRONG -- Donald L. Strong, a resident of Elephant Butte, NM, previously of Albuquerque, went home to the Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; daughter, Donna Hannon and husband, Terry; daughter, Dana Gallegos and husband, Leonard and son, Robert, all of Albuquerque; daughter-in-law, Rene of Centenial, Colorado; and stepchildren, Nicholas Cover and wife, Vicki of Corpus Christie, Texas; Rex Cover and wife, Sheila of Albuquerque, NM and Gayle Reber and husband, Tom of Cumberland, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; and son, Phillip Strong. He was proud to have four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Don entered military service in 1946, and retired as Chief Warrant Officer. After retirement, he accepted a commission as a Major in the New Mexico Defense Force, retiring in 1990 as Brigadier General, Director of a special Task Force for Family Programs. In 1968, Don entered into private business as president of Flowers By Strong, and Duke City Wholesale Floral. He served as president of the Floral Association and Vice President, Director and Treasurer of West Texas-NM Florists Association. He was the first to be inducted into the American Academy of Florists. He served as Commander of Military Order of World Wars; he held Life Membership in the Albuquerque Masonic Lodge No. 60 A.F.&A.M. and the York Rite Bodies and was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Fe and Ballot Abyad Shrine, where he was Charter Commander of the Legion of Honor and President of the Sierra in 2010. Don was a Life Member of the National Sojourners, American Legion Post #44; VFW Post #1389 and DAV. Don was a long time member of Rotary International and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was selected Rotarian of the year twice and was an Emeritus Member in 1997. He is Charter President of the Elephant Butte Rotary Club. Don retired to Elephant Butte in 1998, where he and his wife, became active in the community, and cherished their many wonderful friends. Don will be missed by his living family and his friends throughout New Mexico. ZAMAN -- Shamsuz. On Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home in Socorro, New Mexico, Shamsuz Zaman went home to be with the Lord. Shamsuz was born on February 1, 1930, in Jessore, East Bengal, India. He graduated from the University of Dacca in 1950 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and moved to the United States in 1951. In 1955, he received two Masters' degrees from the Colorado School of Mines, one in Metallurgical Engineering and one in Petroleum Engineering. He did his Doctoral studies in Metallurgy at Northwestern University and the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology from 1956 through 1959. He spent the next 36 years, until his retirement in 1995, travelling the world as a research engineer and project manager with Anaconda Copper Company, the Battelle Memorial Institute, the Colorado School of Mines, UNOCAL, and the Hazen Research Institute. Shamsuz spoke six languages, was an avid reader and chess player, was fond of classical music and poetry, and liked nothing more than debating and discussing philosophy and the natural sciences. He was an accomplished athlete, and in his youth he played soccer, cricket and tennis. In his later years, he had several flirtations with golf, but eventually decided it was easier to fall asleep in front of the TV while watching golf than it was playing it. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Edna his daughter, Zobeida Eye and husband, Kurt; his son, Jon Zaman and wife, Lorry; and his grandchildren, Kevin, Alex and Molly Hunt, Nicole Andraka, and Philip and James Zaman. As his wishes were to be cremated, Shamsuz's grandchildren will serve as Honorary Pall Bearers. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the Daniels Family Funeral Services Socorro Chapel in Socorro, New Mexico with Pastor Carlos Chavez as the celebrant.
