CALKINS -- Carolyn Dean Calkins, 75, a resident of Belen, passed away on May 14, 2011. Carolyn was born in Hale, Mo. On June 28, 1935 to David John and Ruth May Williams. She graduated from Grants High School in 1953 where she was a majorette and taught Home Economics during her senior year. She was the Past Worthy Matron of the Belen Chapter of Eastern Star, a Girl Scout Leader, member of P.E.O., and owned a drapery and seamstress business for 30 years. An excellent baker, she made wedding cakes for many if her friends and neighbors. And even with her severe arthritis, she volunteered at Lovelace hospital to help with the care of patients. She loved to listen and dance to "Big Band" music, as well as being an avid square dancer. She also loved to travel and go on adventures with her family and friends. Carolyn will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl Ralph Calkins, of 53 years. She is survived by her twin sister, Maralyn J. Nelson of Albuquerque, NM; and her three children, David Neil Calkins and wife, Julia of Phoenix, Arizona, Donna Nadine Calkins of Belen, NM, and Ralph Lee Calkins and wife, Laurie of Kasilof, Alaska; and granddaughter Carolyn Irina Calkins. Services will be held at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, 113 La Luna Pl., Rio Communities at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 19. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Arthritis Foundation, at www.arthritis.org.
