ZAMAN -- Shamsuz. On Sunday, May 15, 2011, at his home in Socorro, New Mexico, Shamsuz Zaman went home to be with the Lord. Shamsuz was born on February 1, 1930, in Jessore, East Bengal, India. He graduated from the University of Dacca in 1950 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, and moved to the United States in 1951. In 1955, he received two Masters' degrees from the Colorado School of Mines, one in Metallurgical Engineering and one in Petroleum Engineering. He did his Doctoral studies in Metallurgy at Northwestern University and the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology from 1956 through 1959. He spent the next 36 years, until his retirement in 1995, travelling the world as a research engineer and project manager with Anaconda Copper Company, the Battelle Memorial Institute, the Colorado School of Mines, UNOCAL, and the Hazen Research Institute. Shamsuz spoke six languages, was an avid reader and chess player, was fond of classical music and poetry, and liked nothing more than debating and discussing philosophy and the natural sciences. He was an accomplished athlete, and in his youth he played soccer, cricket and tennis. In his later years, he had several flirtations with golf, but eventually decided it was easier to fall asleep in front of the TV while watching golf than it was playing it. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Edna his daughter, Zobeida Eye and husband, Kurt; his son, Jon Zaman and wife, Lorry; and his grandchildren, Kevin, Alex and Molly Hunt, Nicole Andraka, and Philip and James Zaman. As his wishes were to be cremated, Shamsuz's grandchildren will serve as Honorary Pall Bearers. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the Daniels Family Funeral Services Socorro Chapel in Socorro, New Mexico with Pastor Carlos Chavez as the celebrant. A private interment will be held at a later date. To view funeral information or leave a condolence online please visit www.danielsfuneral.com. Shamsuz's care has been entrusted to: Daniels Family Funeral Services 309 Garfield Socorro, NM 87801 (575) 835-1530
