ANDERSON -- Robert Lewis Anderson Born on August 16, 1930, in Los Angeles, CA, Bob passed away on July 5, 2006 in Tucson, AZ, while surrounded by his family. Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Ruth Anderson. Bob is survived by loving wife of 55 years, Doris Gridley; sister, Carolyn Morris (Gary); children, Susan (John Attwood), Bruce (Rebecca), Beverly; grandsons, Jerrod and Clinton; three nieces; plus many friends, including Kim and Michael Delbecq, from Albuquerque, NM, who are part of the family. Bob attended the University of Arizona where he played football for the Wildcats. He graduated from U of A in 1954 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. It was at the U of A that he met the love of his life, Doris Gridley. Bob served his country in the 7th Armored Division, as a tank commander during the Korean War. He left the military after attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Bob and Doris raised their family in Arizona and then moved to Albuquerque in 1987 where they lived for 13 years before returning to Tucson to retire. Bob loved all things outdoors, ranging from fishing in the White Mountains with family and friends, to walking his adoring canine companion, Sadie. He was a big fan of U of A basketball and football, and was truly a Wildcat to the bone. He will be missed by many. A Memorial Service will be held in Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Leukemia Society of America.

AVENT -- Clarence Avent, native of New Mexico, age 72, passed away after a long illness Thursday, July 13, 2006. BENSON -- Mary V. Benson, age 92, born in Green Forest, AR in 1914, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Reo J. Benson, in 1993. She is survived by four children; Douglas Benson of Manhattan, KS, Karen Benson of Omaha, NE; Donald Benson of Seattle, WA, and Pattie Timmons of Deming, NM; two grandchildren, Eric Benson of Wamego, KS, and Craig Benson of Columbia, MO; and two great-grandchildren, Margaret and Josephine Benson of Wamego, KS. A long-time resident of Taos, NM, she and her husband retired in Albuquerque in 1982. The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. BIERSTEIN -- Helen Weatherwax Bierstein, July 11, 2006. She was a resident of Albuquerque, NM for 20 years, at La Vida Llena Retirement Center, Albuquerque. She was 95. She is survived by her husband, John R. Bierstein; two daughters, Anne Grenfell, of Westminster, MD; and Susan Director of Leesburg, VA; three grandchildren, Jennifer Boniface of Washington, DC; April Newton of Havre de Grace, MD, and Benjamin Finzel of Washington, DC; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Jeffery Newton of Havre de Grace, MD, and a third one due in August. Mrs. Bierstein, a native of Michigan, graduated from Olivet College, Olivet MI, and did graduate studies at Lebanon Valley College, Lebanon, PA. She was employed as a social worker in both Michigan and Pennsylvania; as a newspaper journalist for the Harrisburg Patriot News; and finally as Executive Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Harrisburg, PA. Mrs. Bierstein was President of the United Church Women in Hershey, PA; President of the Episcopal Church Women in Harrisburg and Hershey; and served for many years as Vice-President of Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship International. With her gift for writing, she penned several short stories, memoirs, and inspirational articles. She also lectured at seminars on near death experiences. A member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church, Albuquerque, Mrs. Bierstein was an active participant in resident social events, coordinating entertainment and Communication programs at La Vida Llena. Burial will be by Sunrise Funeral Options, Albuquerque, NM with internment at the National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. BLOCK -- Sherrill "Sherry" Logan Block, 69, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, July 13, 2006. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, T.J. Block; three children, John J. Block and wife, Jean of Albuquerque, Jennie Taylor and husband, Phillip of Albuquerque, and Pamela Rodriguez and husband, Miguel of Guymon, OK; seven grandchildren, Zachary Taylor and wife, Sarah, Jessica Taylor Rodriguez and husband, Neil, William Rodriguez, Logan Rodriguez, Amelia Rodriguez, David Shaffer, and Jennifer Brown; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Cody, Brandon, Dane, and Keller. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, John A. Logan and Dorothy Alice Mumford Logan. She was born on February 26, 1937 in Albuquerque. She was married at the age of 16 and left school in her sophomore year to raise her children. When her children entered school she enrolled in the University of New Mexico and graduated with a teaching degree. She was a fifth and sixth grade teacher at Wherry Elementary School and a sixth grade teacher at Van Buren Middle School. Sherry was a long time member of the United Methodist Church. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. BRADFORD -- William R. Bradford "Bill", passed away Saturday, June 10, 2006. He is survived by his sons, Richard, Chuck, and Michael; daughter, Beverly; daughter-in-law, Gerry; grandchildren, Alicia, Ricky Lynn, Kim, Aaron, Caitlin, and Kirsten; six great-grandchildren; other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Bill was an Alcohol and Drug Counselor for the State of New Mexico, where he was always helping others overcome their addictions. He was continually concerned for the welfare and best interests of others. The family wishes to thank Bill M. and Ladera Nursing Facility for the care the provided for Bill; to Ambercare Hospice and Claudia and Dan M., who would always take the time to sit and visit with Bill and to my good friend, Dr. Middleton and his wonderful staff who always made sure dad was comfortable and pain free in his last days. A special thank you to my daughter, Alicia, who helped me take care of grandpa and also my son-in-law and daughter, Nick and Danielle for their moral support. CASTOR -- Shirley D. Castor was born March 20, 1929 in Red Owl, SD to Harry and Grace Smith and passed away July 3, 2006. Shirley married Thomas J. Castor August 14, 1948. They were married 54 years when Tom passed away December 2002. Shirley and Tom had four surviving children, Kathleen and Mark Hoffman of Tampa, FL, Lou and Denise Castor of Sundance, WY, Tom and Cathy Castor of Niota, TN, and Leslie Joy and Tom Dent of Albuquerque, NM; four grandchildren, Charlie, Carrie, Connie, and Amy Jo; three foster children, Adrien, Izaac, and Daisy; six great-grandchildren, Preston, Gabe, Nate, Kaleb, Alex, Karisa, and a baby boy on the way. Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Gwen Beaudin of Colorado Springs, CO; and her sister-in-law, Ursala Smith of West End, NC. She began her teaching career in 1948 in a 1-room school house north of Belle Fourche. Shirley attended Black Hills State College earning a BS in education in 1961. She taught 1st and 2nd grades for 29 years in Lead, SD; Knoxville, TN; and Albuquerque, NM. After retiring in 1990 she and Tom returned to Spearfish, SD. Shirley's strength, perseverance, and work ethic made an impression on those who met her. She was often seen walking around Spearfish and was a frequent visitor of the Grace Balloch Memorial Library. She was a gardener, quilter, and according to family and friends the best chocolate chip cookie maker. Shirley will be remembered for her dedication to her family and for being the best friend anyone could ask for.

COAN -- Kenneth P. Coan, 95, a resident of Rio Rancho, NM since 1974, former resident of Wauwatosa and St. Germain, WI for 29 years, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2006. He was born May 17, 1911 the son of Earl and Emma Jane Miller Coan in Clay City, IN. A mechanical engineering graduate of Purdue University where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity; a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as Trustee and Elder for many years in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa; member of First Presbyterian Church of Albuquerque; member and Honorary Past Master of Sandoval Lodge #76, A.F.&A.M. of Rio Rancho; member of Scottish Rite Bodies of Santa Fe and York Rite Bodies of New Mexico, and Ballut Abyad Shrine. He retired from REXNORD, Inc. of Milwaukee in 1972 after 37 years in various sales and management positions, both domestic and international. He was a retired Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army Reserve, serving 22 years with over 4 years continuous active duty in WWII with the 5th Inf. Division and 46th F.A. Bn in Iceland, United Kingdom including combat in Europe with Patton's 3rd Army. Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lucy Keiser Coan on September 28, 1995; and also his daughter-in-law, Melanie Ann Coan on September 26, 1997; his son, Michael, on September 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Frances M. (Stewart) Coan, whom he married July 27, 2000; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Coan of Sherman Oaks, CA; and son, Craig S. Coan, of St. Germain, WI and Breckenridge, CO; one brother, Glen A. Coan and wife, Libby of Matthews, NC; one sister, Dorothy Coan Bergmann of Westminster, CA; one sister-in-law, Jane Coan of Indianapolis, IN; five nephews and seven nieces; step-son, Timothy Stewart and wife, Barbara of Chester, NJ; one step-granddaughter; and two step-grandsons; and two step-great-grandchildren. COLCLOUGH -- NORMAN CHARLES Dr. Norman Charles Colclough, 69, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2006. He was a loving husband and father who was an example of kindness, integrity, and humor. He was a devout member of the Netherwood Park Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; son, Damon of San Diego; daughter, Marya; step-daughter, Sheryl; step-son, Russell; two sisters, Jeanne Stepka, Phyllis Renaurd; and his beloved dog, Sadie. He also leaves behind many patients from his 35 years of practice who he cared deeply for and who in turn cared very much for him. His passing will leave a void for many people. DONOVAN -- Jeanie Donovan, 59, a resident of Rio Rancho, lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 11, 2006. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, of 27 years, Hal; daughter, Cheryl Wildes and husband, David of Rio Rancho, NM; son, Bill of Chandler, AZ; son, David and wife, Kathleen of Chandler, AZ; sisters, Joan Fowler and husband, Glenn of Gladstone, MO, and Shirley Walker and husband, Joe of Shawnee, KS; sister-in-law, Barbara Gillespie and husband, Andy of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Kyle Connelley, Jennifer Duggan, Dianna - Lauren - Zachary - Jacob - Olivia and Alexa Donovan; David and wife, Carole, Dianna and Drew Wildes; eight nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother. Jeanie loved her family dearly and will be sorely missed. Jeanie was the office manager for the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce and deeply involved in her community. She enjoyed playing golf and was an avid UNM Lobos fan. Her dancing eyes, cheery smile, and wonderful laugh brightened the world around her and will be remembered by all that knew her. DUDDLESTON -- Peggy H. Duddleston, age 77, passed away on July 11, 2006, after a courageous battle against cancer. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, LCDR Joseph D. Duddleston, USN retired. She is also survived by three sisters, Margaret Rhode of Longmont, CO, Myra Springer of Pensacola, FL, and Joy Whitcomb of Redding, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Many thanks to her faithful and devoted niece Margaret Prickett, who was at her bedside during most of her ordeal. Private prayers were conducted at her bedside. Cremation has taken place and interment will eventually be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

GALLEGOS -- DANIEL. Daniel Timothy Gallegos, 22, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on July 13, 2006. Daniel is the beloved son to, Mrs. Viola Prendergast and husband, Michael; Daniel is also survived by his three loving brothers: Arnold L. Gallegos Jr., fiancee, Victoria, Kenneth Gallegos, and Joshua Prendergast; his loving sister, Cynthia Gallegos-Lujan and husband, Michael. He is also survived by his niece, Ariana Gallegos; his nephew, Michael Lujan; a special friend, Matthew Romero; by his beloved auntie and Godmother, Margaret Gallegos and husband, Len; two uncles, Robert Apodaca and wife, Lorraine and Donald Apodaca; and many cousins and friends. Daniel was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Estella Apodaca and a cousin, Anthony Apodaca. Daniel was a giving person and had a very big heart. "We love you and miss you, Dood." Visitation for Daniel will be Monday evening in Gabaldon Memorial Chapel from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Final visitation and Funeral Service will be Tuesday morning July 18, 2006, time and place to be announced. GUTIERREZ -- Daniel Gutierrez Sr., age 57, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, was called to his heavenly home by the Lord our Savior, Wednesday, July 5, 2006, while visiting in Phoenix, AZ. He was a lifelong resident of Carnuel and Edgewood, NM and member of the East Mountain Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Daniel was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served his country during the Vietnam War; and was awarded the Purple Heart in 1969. Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Lorraine Gutierrez of the family home; his children Daniel Carlos Ben Gutierrez and wife, Tammy, Anthony Alex Gutierrez and fiancee, Laura Lopez, Filomeno Roberto Juan Gutierrez and fiancee, Lori Jiron, Maria Ursula Beard and husband, Kevin; his foster-son, Chris Sena; and nine grandchildren, Michelle, Dillon, Issac, Madison, Veronica, Cameron, Victoria, Riley, and Filomeno Jr. Also surviving are three brothers, Virgil Gutierrez, Santiago Gutierrez, and Ponciano Gutierrez Jr.; four sisters, Patricia Campbell and husband, Dean, Levy Jaramillo and husband, Frank, Rita Rivera, Merilyn Gutierrez and Mike Maldonado; numerous other beloved family members and friends. HOOTON -- Robert Porter Hooton died June 28, 2006 at Manzano del sol Good Samaritan home, where he briefly resided after a bout with pneumonia. He spent most of his last year at his home, in his garden among family and friends. He was one month short of his 89th birthday; he is survived by two sons, Tim and Chris, and two grandsons, Zack and Keenan. Bob was born in Washington D.C. in 1917 to Phillip and Agnes Mae Hooton. He was raised in Bloomington, IL where his father was a successful architect. He followed his father into the study of architecture receiving a B.A. in architectural design from the University of Illinois in 1940 thought art was always his passion. He worked on the Architectural Design staff for the City of Washington D.C. but his career was interrupted by the outbreak of WWII. He joined the Navy, and served in the Seabees in the Pacific theater, including Iwo Jima. After the war he lived and painted in Guatemala, his works from this period have been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the NM Museum of Ethnology, The Illinois State Museum, and the Plaza Gallery in Santa Fe. In 1950 he met and married Peg Nelson and the two came west to NM. Where the attended graduate school at UNM opened Workshop Originals in the Patio Market in Old Town, where they sold their own fine handmade jewelry and lived in the back of the store. The store later moved to San Felipe St. and evolved into a Gallery for other local artists as well as a Mecca for collectors of folk arts from around the world. Bob made many lasting contributions to the New Mexico arts communities, playing a key role in the establishment of the Albuquerque Museum and the founding of the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair. He was instrumental in the early days of the historic preservation movement, helping to establish historic zoning in Old Town. He also drew on his architectural background, working as a landscape designer. His own garden was featured on several occasions in Sunset Magazine. When Workshop Originals closed business in 1976, Bob took up painting again full time. His work evolved over the years from colored pencil to painting in acrylic to handmade paper to increasingly sculptural collage work. He received the Bravo Award in 1998 for Excellence In Visual Arts and in 2002 the Magnifico Honors Award for Lifetime Achievement, along with his wife Peg. His drawings and collages produced during the 1945 attack on Iwo Jima can be hang in the permanent collection of NM State University. It is not only in the art community that Bob will be missed, though. He will be fondly remembered for a long time to come by those in his family, his neighbors, and friends. MITCHELHILL -- James Moffat Mitchelhill, 93, recently of Boerne, TX died on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at the Laurel Canyon Health Care Residence in Albuquerque, NM. Known as Jim, he was born on August 11, 1912 to the late William and Jeannette Ambrose Mitchelhill in St. Joseph, MO. He received a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Civil Engineering at Northwestern University. Practicing his profession, he lived in Montana and South Dakota when he was with the Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Paul Railroad from 1936-45; in Puerto Rico with the Central Aguirre Sugar Company from 1946-54, and 1964-82; in Chile with the Braden Copper Company from 1955-63; and in Boerne, TX as Kendall County Engineer from 1982-1996. An ardent traveler, Mr. Mitchelhill was a member of the Travellers' Century Club, The Explorers' Club of New York City, and the Circumnavigators Club. In the 1960s and 1970s, he spent his vacations hunting big game in Africa and India. He circumnavigated the world 10 times, most recently in 2003 to observe the 75th anniversary of his first airplane flight. Two wives, Maurine Hutchason Karrasch and Alicia Beuchat Koke, predeceased him. He is survived by two daughters, Jeri and husband, Charles T. Riney of Albuquerque, and Janis M. Leas of Stone Ridge, NY; his stepdaughter, Michele Koke, of Santiago, Chile; also five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. OTTERSTETTER -- Gilbert W. Otterstetter, age 63, of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away in his home on the morning of Thursday, July 13, 2006. Gilbert joined the Air Force at the age of 18, where he served eight years, one of which was in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged. He met and married Virginia Gonzales while stationed at Kirtland. After his discharge from the Air Force, they made their home in Sheboygan, WI. He retired from the Kohler Company in 1995. They moved back to New Mexico in 1996. PATTERSON -- John P. Patterson, retired Professor of Music at LSU, died on July 12, 2006. He served in the Army in the Korean Conflict playing in the band at Fort Rucker, AL. He studied bassoon privately in Philadelphia with Sol Schoenbach. Upon receiving a M. Music Ed. from University of Texas, he and his wife moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 1955. John began teaching bassoon and saxophone at LSU. Over the years, he played in the Timm Woodwind Quintet at LSU, the Nashville Symphony, Austin Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, and the New Orleans Philharmonic. After retirement in 1985 he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. John and his wife moved to Albuquerque in 2003 to be near family. John leaves behind many devoted and accomplished music students. WELLS -- Arthur Deforest Wells, of Albuquerque, died June 6, 2006 at the age of 92. He was devoted to his family, conscientious at work, faithful to his church and friends, and loved to sing. Art was born September 13, 1913 in Kenesaw, NE, to Mabel Clare and Arthur C. Wells. He grew up on farms in Missouri and Kansas, and was president of his high school class in Ottowa, KS. He moved to Washington, D.C., to find a job in the government. There, he also found his future wife, Margaret Strait. After they were married, the Internal Revenue Service transferred the couple to Salina, KS, where they lived 18 years and raised their two daughters. In 1959, they moved to Albuquerque. Art completed his career in government service in the U.S. Forest Service, and retired in 1976. After retirement, Art indulged his passion for softball by playing in the city league until age 80. Music was his other passion; he sang in his church choir all his life. Art and Margaret were long term members of Los Altos Christian Church, 11900 Haines NE, where Art's Celebration of Life service will be held on July 23, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. Art's living family include daughters Jeannette Storrs with her husband, Charles D. Storrs, and Peggy Wells and her husband, Ronald Davis. He also has four grandchildren, Ty Storrs (Brooke), Tim Storrs (Lorrie), Terri Storrs and Kristin Tomany (Steve).
