Obituary for PATTERSON

John P. Patterson, retired Professor of Music at LSU, died on July 12, 2006. He is survived by his wife Gena; brothers, Bill Patterson of Naples, FL and Walter Patterson of Nashville, TN; children Sharon Bourque and husband, Frank of Wilmington, NC, Charles Patterson and wife, Betsy of Albuquerque, Mary Jackson and husband, Kevin of Austin, TX, and James Patterson and wife, Hiroko of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Ashley, Jennifer, and David Patterson of Albuquerque and Tara and Leah Jackson of Austin, TX. John was born to E. E. and Mary Riggs Patterson on April 1, 1929 in Nashville, TN. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Peabody College. He served in the Army in the Korean Conflict playing in the band at Fort Rucker, AL. He studied bassoon privately in Philadelphia with Sol Schoenbach. Upon receiving a M. Music Ed. from University of Texas, he and his wife moved to Baton Rouge, LA in 1955. John began teaching bassoon and saxophone at LSU. Over the years, he played in the Timm Woodwind Quintet at LSU, the Nashville Symphony, Austin Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, and the New Orleans Philharmonic. After retirement in 1985 he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. John and his wife moved to Albuquerque in 2003 to be near family. John leaves behind many devoted and accomplished music students. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Steve McElroy officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church (1615 Copper NE, Albuquerque, NM).
