CHIORDI -- Michael John Chiordi, 62, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, March 12, 2005. He is survived by his fiance, Cathy Fernandez of Santa Fe; children, Michelann Tachibana and husband, Wes of Grapevine, TX, Angelus Person and husband, Gary of Albuquerque; and their mother, Helen Corcoran of Albuquerque; and grandchildren, Malachi, Anikin, Jasmine, and Trevor; and brother-in-law, Charlie T. Jones. Mr. Chiordi was preceded in death by his parents, John Siro Chiordi and mother, Sophie Rose Chiordi; and sister, Carol Ann Chiordi-Jones. He was Executive Vice President of Southern Wine and Spirits of New Mexico. CORDOVA -- Eugene Cordova, 73, a lifelong resident of Bernalillo, passed away Monday, March 14 2005, peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Cordova, of 34 years. He is also survived by his brothers, Sam Cordova and wife, Irene, Tony Cordova and wife, Tilly; sisters, Mary Romo and husband, Gilbert, Julie Scarpinatto and husband, Joe, Virginia Cordova; sons, Orlando Cordova and wife, Beth, Danny Cordova and wife, Carla, Raymond Perez; daughters, Maxine Ivie and husband, Michael, Gracie Lopez and husband, Eddie, Lina Alvarez and husband, John, Elaine Lopez and husband, Steve, Patricia Cordova, Bobbie Blackford, Nancy Meredith; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many wonderful friends. She is survived by her children, Laura Tapia and husband, Thomas of Albuquerque NM, Janice De Herrera and husband, Ted, of Antonito CO, and Leonard E. Garcia and wife, Suzanne of Albuquerque NM; grandchildren, Nadine Tapia, Lydia McCabe, Lucian Tapia, Claudine Graves, Zachary De Herrera, Matthew De Herrera, Demetrio De Herrera, Peter Garcia, Hannah Garcia, and Karen Garcia; great-grandchild, Adam Tapia. GATHINGS -- Nedra F. Gathings, 71, beloved mom, grammy, and resident of Albuquerque since 1956, died Saturday, March 12, 2005. She is survived by her son, Darlan Rusch Gathings; daughter, Desiree Rachel Gathings and husband, Fredvic L. Zabala; grandson, Robert Brandon Zabala; granddaughter, Daisy Raquel Gathings Leon, all of Albuquerque. Nedra was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert O. Gathings on November 29, 2002. She was born in Hot Springs, AR in 1933. She attended and graduated from Fisk University in Tennessee where she received her Bachelor's of Science. Nedra was a social worker at Bernalillo County Medical Center (BCMC), then became a volunteer worker and homemaker while she raised her two children. Nedra was active in the NAACP and participated in lobbying efforts for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in Employment. She volunteered for many years at Presbyterian Hospital and served as President of the Women's Auxiliary. Nedra also volunteered for a number of years at the Rio Grande Chapter of the American Red Cross and served as Chairman of Volunteers. She was an active member and served office in various community organizations including Board of Prestige of BCMC, Las Amapolas Garden Club, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and National Council of Negro Women. Nedra also had a deep devotion to Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees including Committee on Lay Leadership, Pastor Parish Relations, Trustees Committee, Finance and Education Committees and Co-Chaired the Vision 2000 Campaign. She will be missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005, 11:00 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver, SE with Reverend Tom Beach officiating. GOON -- Marguerite Nichols Goon of Albuquerque, NM went to be with her Lord on Friday, March 11, 2005. Marguerite was born on January 16, 1925 in Sumter, SC, the daughter of James Louis Nichols and Slava Kvaternik Nichols. She graduated from Sumter High School in 1942. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC and her Nursing degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD. She married Carroll D. Goon on June 8, 1950. They reared their four children in Monticello, UT where Dr. Goon had his medical practice for 30 years and she worked alongside him as an OR nurse and Office Manager. Upon retirement in Albuquerque, she was a faithful volunteer with Meals on Wheel and a member of Hoffmantown Church. Preceded in death by her parents and a sister (Mary); she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Carroll of Albuquerque; daughters, Carroll and husband, Willem of Toronto, Canada, and Kathy and husband, Don of Portland, OR; sons, Jim and wife, Leslie of Frisco, TX, and Jon and wife, Judy of Mt. Airy, MD; sisters, Lula Sheridan, Eleanor Denny, and Gloria Kerr and husband, Bill; and brothers, Nick Nichols and wife, Cleo, and George Nichols and wife, Mary Ann; three granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. GRIEGO -- Meres Griego, 86, a life-long resident of New Mexico, died Monday, March 14, 2005. She is survived by her son, Rey Griego and his wife, Sally of Tijeras; grandchildren, Norma Wilson and husband, Stanley, Chris Griego and wife, Brenda, Bryan Griego and wife, Veronica, Brenda Griego and husband, Matt Anderson, Rey Griego, Jr., and Bridget Griego and fiance, Randy Priddy; ten great-grandchildren; and brother, Arturo Martinez and wife, Flora. Meres was preceded in death by her husband, Roman Griego and son, Blas Griego. She was born in San Antonio, NM. Meres was an active member of Holy Child Catholic Church. Her family came first in her life, and she kept them in her prayers daily. She was a beloved mother, grandma, and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. HALL -- Nathan Ray Hall, 79, a resident of Albuquerque for 35 years, died Monday, March 14, 2005. Nathan was born on November 29, 1925 in Prairie Grove, TX to Lewis and Lydia Hall. He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant of the United States Air Force after 28 years of service. Nathan was an active member of American Legion Post #49 and Fleet Reserve Association #200. He is survived by his children, Linda K. Sullivan and her husband, Nicholas of Smithfield, VA, Richard L. Hall of Newport News, VA, and Timothy A. Hall of Albuquerque; two sisters, Joy Anderson of Arkansas and Nell Lee of North Carolina, and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Angela Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jimmie Lee (Peoples) Hall. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. LERMA -- SAMUEL. Mr. Samuel (Sam) Lerma, 52, a resident of Albuquerque was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 11, 2005. Sam is survived by his parents, Alex and Nettie Lerma; two sisters, Bernadette and Veronica Lerma; three brothers, Ruben Lerma and wife, Patsy, Phillip Lerma and wife, Barbara and Teddy Lerma. Sam was a favorite uncle to three nephews, five nieces, and one great-nephew. Sam has blessed his family by leading them to Our Lord Jesus Christ. Sam has also blessed the lives of many friends and some who were lost to the knowledge and the privilege of serving the Lord. Sam has fulfilled his mission in life by his generous and caring Spirit and will be greatly missed by those he touched and those who knew him. Services will be Friday, March 18, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Reserve Community Presbyterian Church. He will be laid to rest in his beloved City of Reserve, New Mexico where he spent many happy times of his life from childhood to adult. MADRID -- Lorencita Madrid died March 13, 2005 in Albuquerque at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her sons, Florencio Madrid Sr., Ray Madrid, and Herman Madrid; and grandson, Florencio Madrid Jr. She is survived by four sons, Carpio Madrid and wife, Mary of Oklahoma, Tony Madrid of Colorado, Tibo Madrid, and Jackie Madrid, both of Albuquerque; five daughters, Sopie Lucero, Florinda Cortez and Albert, Laura Aragon, Sandy Villagas, and Isabel Madrid, all of Albuquerque; brother, Sam Perea of Albuquerque; sister, Lucy Rascon and husband, Eddie of El Paso, TX; 39 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. MAISH -- Alexander Bourke Maish, 49, died Friday, March 11, 2005. He is survived by his son, Benjamin; his parents, Dr. Alexander M. and Elizabeth Maish of Arlington, VA; and his sister, Darby Maish Woolley of Austin, TX. Alex was preceded in death by his twin brother, Fred, of Albuquerque. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast, community leader, and outstanding engineer. Valedictorian of his high school, he graduated from Princeton University and earned a Masters Degree at the University of Virginia. Alex was employed at Sandia National Laboratories for 25 years in the field of photovoltaics where he pioneered systems for solar concentrator arrays, and in robotics where he worked until his death. He struggled his entire life with cystic fibrosis, spending great amounts of time mentoring young people with the disease, writing articles in CF journals, and serving as president of the Cystic Fibrosis Roundtable. In spite of the debilitating effects of the disease, Alex managed to backpack, ski, sail, and travel. His favorite haunts were the canyons of southeastern Utah, where he spent many a vacation backpacking, and the British Virgin Islands, where he captained large sailboats. His love of adventure took him as far as the Orient, to Latin America, and to Europe many times. Memorial Services celebrating Alex's life will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at 5:00 p.m., at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd. NE. MENDEZ -- Pedro Santiago Mendez was born March 30, 1923, died on Saturday morning March 13, 2005, after a long illness here in Albuquerque NM, Pedro lived at 119 Williams SE, raised in Albuquerque, NM until the age of six years old. Left with his father to live in La Barca, Mexico, and stayed there until he was 12 years old. He then came back to the United States at age 23 to visit his uncle where he met Susana Jinzo. They later married July 30, 1947. He had 12 children and lived a long life of 49 years with his beloved Susana Jinzo. Both Pedro and Susie left a legacy for their children, 23 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Pedro Santiago Mendez is survived by his five daughters, (Caregiver) Veronica J. (Pino) Mendez, Eppie Montoya, Rachael Jaramillo, Jennie Ortiz, and Helen Jaramillo; five sons, Antonio Mendez, Pete Mendez, John Mendez, Ray Duran, and Rudy Chavez; 23 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. Pedro's heart was his wife and family here in Albuquerque. Pedro joined "En El Ultimo Descanso" his beloved wife, Susana Jinzo Mendez; mother, Epiminia Santiago Mendez; father, Epifiano Mendez; brother, Juan Santiago Mendez and sister, Porfidia Santiago Mendez De Garcia. RITSCHEL -- Paul Edgar Ritschel, 88, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2005. Paul was born in 1916 to Arthur and Adelaide Ritschel in Monmouth, IL, the youngest of five children. He began working for Trans World Airlines in 1943, and was stationed in numerous locations throughout the world, including Athens, Greece, where he met his wife Thalia in 1948. In 1961, he was assigned to work at the Albuquerque Sunport, where he continued his career until retiring from TWA in 1981. Paul was a founding member of the Sunport Optimists Club, through which he volunteered much of his time for community events and for raising money in support of the youth of Albuquerque. Paul is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thalia Ritschel; his daughter, Katherine Ward and husband, Allen Ward of Centennial, CO; his son, Dennis Ritschel and wife, Kathleen Ritschel of Santa Fe, NM; his granddaughter, Annie and his grandson, Devin. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Mary, John, Frances, and Betty, and his daughter, Velma. Services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2005, 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2532 Vermont NE, 87110. ROBERTS -- Jimmie L. 1920-2005 Mr. Jimmie L. Roberts, 84, a resident of North Belen, died on March 14, 2005 after a long illness. Jimmie was born on a farm outside Tangier, Ok on June 28, 1920 and grew up on farms in Oklahoma. He was the tenth of twelve children. Jimmie served in the US Army during WWII with the 344th Field Artillery. He took part in the D-Day invasion and moved with the Army across the Continent to Czechoslovakia. After his discharge from the Army in 1945, Jimmie came back to the Midwest and found work on the gang of the AT&SF Railroad. He came to Belen in 1950 and was promoted to signal work on the Santa Fe. In Belen he met his beloved wife of 52 years, Hazel (Murry) Roberts. They were married in 1953 and had three children. Jimmie worked for the Santa Fe as a signalman until 1985, when he retired. He was active in his church, the United Methodist Church of Belen, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for 19 years, as well as on all of the boards of the Church. A devoted and loving father and husband, Jimmie also loved his farm north of Belen, where he raised his family. In addition to his wife, Hazel, Jimmie is survived by his three children; Keith of Bethesda, MD, Bruce of Anchorage, AK, and Kathryn (Roberts) Campbell of Albuquerque, NM; by four Roberts grandchildren, Ryan, Alyse, Ian, and Morgan; and by two sisters, Helen Owens and June Coleman, both of Florence, AL. A viewing will take place at Riverside Funeral Home of Belen from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 16, 2005. A Memorial Service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Belen at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday March 17, 2005. Burial will follow the service at Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen. RODGERS -- Lena K. Rodgers, a resident of Del Rio, TX, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 12, 2005. Lena was born February 21, 1912 in Pueblo, CO to William and Carolyn Kindel. She married William Rodgers and had one son, also named William Rodgers. Lena was preceded in death by her husband and her son. The family moved to Albuquerque in the late 1930s until 1965 when they returned to Colorado. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and a founding member of Hoffmantown Baptist Church. Lena taught preschool and Sunday School for many years, attended WMU and taught Internationals English as a second language. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Rita Stone; grandchildren, Richard and wife, Teri Rodgers, Laura and husband, Michael Freeman, and Raymond Rodgers; and great-grandchildren, Heather Freeman, Elizabeth Rodgers, and Nicholas Rodgers. RODGERS -- Opal F. Morlan Rodgers, 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 30 years, Edwin Rodgers. SAAVEDRA -- Herman E. Saavedra, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, was born December 7, 1946. He passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005. Herman was the owner and operator of Barcelona Tree Services, an expert tree care and landscaping service. He was an assistant with the cub scouts, and enjoyed fishing, camping and outdoor activities. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Mary Saavedra of the family home in Albuquerque; one daughter, Lisa Griego and husband Anthony of Belen; one son, Herman Saavedra Jr and wife Brandie of Albuquerque; his mother, Anita Saavedra of Rio Rancho; three grandsons, Damien, Sabastian and Demitrii; four brothers, Lorenzo Casias and wife Rachel of California, Willie Casias and wife Angie of Los Lunas, Pete Casias of Texas, Gilbert Casias and wife Lorie of California; two sisters, Isabel Saavedra and Lala Griego both of Rio Rancho; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel on Thursday, March 17, 2005. The viewing will begin at 9:30am, followed by the funeral service at 10:00am. Chaplain Larry Wills will officiate. Burial will follow the services at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with Robert Sandusky, Bill Casias, Larry Saavedra, Julian Sisneros, Ryan Winters, and Ben “Broken” Quesenberry serving as pallbearers. STAKE -- Helen Stake, 84, a resident of New Mexico since 1952, died Monday, March 14, 2005. She is survived by husband, Floyd Stake, of Albuquerque; daughter, Beth Evans, and husband, Joe of Cheyenne, WY; son, Dennis Verstynen and wife, Pamela of Albuquerque, NM; three grandchildren, Melissa DeFratis of Cheyenne, WY, Timothy Verstynen and wife, Heather, of San Francisco, CA, and Thomas Verstynen of Albuquerque, NM; four great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Jamison, Lindsey, and Logan DeFratis of Cheyenne, WY; and a brother, Baron Johnson of Barron, WI. She is also survived by Floyd's children, Randy, Jay, Peter, Paul, Elizabeth, and Victoria and their families. Helen was a former Administrative Assistant at Sandia National Labs and member of Faith Lutheran Church. TULL -- Nadine Yvonne Kinder Tull, age 79 and a resident of Bosque Farms, NM for over 52 years, passed away March 14, 2005, at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital after a long courageous battle against cancer. She was born January 19, 1926 in Lamar, CO to Delaney C. and Freida V. (King) Kinder. She was a 1943 graduate of Las Animas High School, Las Animas, CO. Nadine began a career as a civil servant in Albuquerque, NM at what was then Sandia Base in April 1949, when she went to work at the Base Housing Office. John Tull, Sr., her husband, had remained a Naval Reservist during this time and was recalled to active duty a second time for Korean War service in 1950. He and Nadine then spent the next two years on Kodiak Island, off Alaska, where he ran the base print shop. John and Nadine returned to Albuquerque in August of 1952, moved to Bosque Farms and resumed their jobs at Sandia Base with Nadine continuing her job helping military families new to the area with a critical need's housing. She retired in June 1974 as the Base Housing Project manager after more than 25 years of distinguished service. Nadine is survived by: husband John T. Tull, Sr., Belen, NM; a son, Commander John T. Tull, Jr. (USN, Ret.) and wife Linda of Bosque Farms, NM; three brothers: Ken Kinder and wife ,Ida of Boise, ID; Keith Kinder and wife, Pat of Boise, ID; and Charlie Kinder of Seattle, WA, and two grandchildren: Tamera Scorpio and husband, Jason of Fort Polk, LA and John T. Tull, III and girlfriend, Miranda Groomes of San Diego, CA, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Geraldine (Jeri) E. Murphy and Connie E. Roberson; and her niece, Kimberly J. Kinder. WELLS -- James L. Wells, 57, of Albuquerque, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 12, 2005. He was born to Lester and Norma Alice (Everett) Wells in North Tonawanda, NY. James is survived by his children, Paul James Wells, Norma Jean and husband, Andrew Price, and Michael David Wells, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren; Satchel Paul Wells, Zhora Adelle Price, and Hero Alice Price; mother of his children, Martie Wells, also of Albuquerque; his sisters, Leslie Corenfield of Austin, TX and Beth and husband, Jim DiFranco; brothers, Robert and wife, Sharon Wells and David and wife, Kathy Wells, all of Phoenix, AZ. James is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon Wells. Mr. Wells was a retiree of the United States Air Force.
