AVERY -- Mary Dell Avery, 87, a resident of Albuquerque for 58 years, died on Saturday, March 6, 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Centers and husband, Carl; son, Bob Avery and wife, Maxine, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Lucille Garcia, Jeff Centers and wife, Lori all of Albuquerque, Chris Centers and wife, Melanie of Phoenix, AZ, Carol Lee Johns and husband, Jeremy of Houston, TX, and Ryan Avery of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Aaron Johns, Alyssa Johns, and Avery Centers; sisters, Sibyl Slocomb of Texas, and Dorothy Hayman of Albuquerque; brother, Warren Graybill of Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Ray Avery on September 16, 1977, two brothers and a sister. Mary Dell worked at Lovelace Hospital for 27 years and was a long time active member of Grace Church. BAKER -- Joe E. Baker passed away on March 9, 2004 in Rio Rancho, NM with his daughter, Gail Baker Jones at his side. He was born on June 2, 1917 in Stigler, Oklahoma, to Guy and Buena Trent Baker. He married Ruth Sturdy, who died during the birth of their daughter, Ann. He married Wilma Garrett on New Year's Day, 1941. She predeceased him in 1998. Joe grew up on a farm in Stigler, Oklahoma, the fifth of ten children. Although the children were required to work hard on the farm, he was released from chores to play high school football, which he did for four years. A gifted athlete, he also received a scholarship in track and played college football, as well. He graduated from Northeastern College, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and began teaching school. He worked in a defense plant to help out with the war effort in 1943 and then entered the Maritime service until war's end. After teaching school in Oklahoma and Kansas, he began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and moved his family to Brigham City, Utah. He worked for the BIA for 27 years, with a brief stay in Ft. Apache, Arizona, but lived most of those years in Farmington, New Mexico. Upton retirement, he and Wilma moved to Albuquerque and spent many years traveling the United States in motor homes and taking numerous trips to other countries. He was known for his great skill as a high school football coach, his phenomenal memory of the many students he taught and those he placed in vocational training through his work with the BIA, and his wonderful voice and amazing repertoire of songs. Joe was able to enjoy his lifelong hobby of golf up until his recent illness. He especially found joy in his children and grandchildren and championed their every accomplishment. Joe was a Master Mason, belonging to the Zia Daylight Lodge #77, AF&AM and a member of the Albuquerque Shrine Temple Ballut Abyad. He was survived by his children, Ann (Lanny) Wiens, of Norman, Oklahoma, Gail (Dean) Jones, of Rio Rancho, Peggy (Verne) Hollenbeck, of Laytonville, California, and Joe (Susan) Baker, of Cedar City, Utah. He is also survived by siblings, Roger (LaVerne) Baker, Jim (Mary) Baker, Betty (Ralph) Madson; sisters-in-law, Helen Garrett and Frances Garrett McIntyre, all of Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Ernie Baker of Garrison, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 15, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel with Pastor Rick Donaho, officiating. BAKER -- Mary Nichols Baker, beloved wife of 62 years of SGM John H. Baker, Jr., passed away on March 9, 2004. She is survived by her husband; brother-in-law, Charles Baker and wife, Steffi of Leesburg, FL; six brothers and sisters, Lula Sheridan of Columbia, SC, Eleanor Denny, Aztec, NM, Marguerite Goon and husband, Carroll of Albuquerque, Nick Nichols and wife, Cleo of Sumter, SC, Gloria Kerr and husband Bill of Durham, NC, and George Nichols and wife, Mary Ann of Greenwood, SC; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mary attended the Kirtland Air Force Base Chapel. She was active in the Ko Shari Garden Club in Albuquerque. She was a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Sumter, SC and was a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross and the VA. BONHAM -- Josephine H. Bonham passed away March 7, 2004. She was a member of Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church and active in the Presbyterian Women's Group, helping distribute commodities. BUZZARD -- Kenneth William Buzzard, 57, of Collingswood NJ, beloved son of the late Mr. Charles R. Buzzard, a U.S. Naval Veteran of WWII, and the late Mrs. Gene S. Buzzard, passed away on Thursday, March 4, 2004. Ken was born on February 1, 1947, in Evanston, IL. Growing up in the Chicago area, Ken lived in and around Glenview, IL, graduating from Northwestern University in 1970 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. Ken is survived by his loving wife, Lori Buzzard of Collingswood, NJ; his twin brother, Carl Buzzard and his wife, Debbie Buzzard of Albuquerque, NM; his sister, Virginia Bodine and her husband, Robert Bodine of Garden Grove, CA; his three sons, Chad Buzzard of Charlotte, NC, Michael Buzzard of San Francisco, CA, Peter Buzzard and his fiance, Rebecca Clarridge of New Bern, NC; his daughter, Mary Buzzard of Chicago, IL; his niece, Shelby Peck and his nephew, Nicholas Peck both of Loganville, GA; and countless friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers. He is our family, our friend, and his passing is a profound loss to everyone. DEQUACK -- Mary Phine deQuack, 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1960, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004. She is survived by her son, Walter A. deQuack and wife, Mary Joan of Albuquerque; daughter, Marion deQuack of Albuquerque; son, Peter deQuack and wife, Tammy J of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacob, Calvin, and Sean. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacobus C. deQuack in 1978. Mary immigrated with her family from the Netherlands in 1960. She retired from UNM Post Office. Mary loved to spend time with her grandchildren and was a devoted member of Hoffmantown Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed and was loved by all those blessed to know her. FILIPOVS -- Janis (John) Filipovs, preceded by his wife, Michalina (Helen) passed away on February 26, 2004 at the age of 83. John, a long time resident of Albuquerque, retired from Borden's Diaries as a mechanic in 1985. He was a WWII Veteran of the British Army, Intern'l Brigade, Latvian Division and received the Medal of Honor. FLORENCE -- John Florence, 62 years of age, past away on Monday, March 8, 2004. John was one of seven children born to Manuel and Rita Florence on March 2, 1942 in Las Vegas, NM. He leaves behind a legacy of three children: Manuel Florence, Carla Olivas, and Adele Nieto, as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by Julia Florence. He leaves his loved ones with many warm and loving memories. John Florence will always remain in the hearts of his friends and family and will be missed dearly. Cremation has taken place. HARRIS -- Vinita "Nita" Evelyn Booth Harris, 83, a resident of Albuquerque for 38 years, died Tuesday, March 09, 2004 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Army Colonel (Ret) Judd Thomas Harris, Jr., in 1999. She is survived by five children; Kristin Booth Harris Pilling; Michael Thomas Harris and wife, Sandy; Craig Mitchell Harris; Steven Patrick Harris and wife, Gena all of Albuquerque; and Scott William Harris and wife, DeeDee of Fort Worth, TX. She leaves ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to raising five children, and being a Career Army Wife, she retired from Kirtland Weapons Lab after a long and successful civil service career in 1992. She graduated from the University of Washington, Phi Beta Kappa, was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and the Evening Optimist Club of Albuquerque. She was an accomplished bridge player, seamstress, water and snow skier. Services will be Monday, March 15, 2004 at 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. JOHNSON -- Katie Johnson, 96, a lifelong resident of Belen, New Mexico, peacefully passed away in an Albuquerque hospital on March 6, 2004. She was a very active resident of Belen, being in business there for many years. She was also very active in civic organizations being a member of Belen Chamber of Commerce as well as a past worthy matron of Eastern Star, past president of Belen Pilot Club, and a founding member of First Presbyterian Church in Belen. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the same group for 60 years. Katie was preceded in death by her husband, M.J. "Lefty" Johnson, three brothers, one sister and one grandchild. She is survived by her children, son, Jim Johnson and his wife, Jan; daughter, Carol and her husband, Paul Wood; her grandchildren, Bryan Johnson, Julia and her husband, Steve Scotti, Chuck Smrt and his wife, Sue, Jim Smrt and his wife, Jacque, Dina and her husband, Brian Bell and Sandy and her husband, Ron Beck. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Tiffany, Shannon, Lexi, Hanah, Brady, Cassidy and Stephen; her sister-in-law, Barbara Calhoun; nieces, Betty Hodge and Paula Keeper; nephew, Steve Calhoun and several great nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Gloria Rael who was her wonderful caretaker for two years. Also a thank you to the ladies that cared for her in Albuquerque at the Village at Alameda for one year. LOPEZ -- Ms. Rita Lopez, 52, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on March 9, 2004. Rita is survived by her mother, Rita Lynn; her brother, Vincent G. Lopez; her sister, Amelia Lopez; her father, Gilbert Lopez; a long time friend, Leanne Lockin; a niece, Jolene Atchison; a nephew, Guy V. Lopez; her K-9 Companion, Chesco; many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Rita was a member of the Catholic Church, a teacher at St. Mary's Catholic Church for the past 12 years and has been a dedicated teacher for 30 years. MARTINEZ -- Domingo "Bingo" B. Martinez, born April 27, 1916 in Sena, New Mexico, died peacefully on March 9th, 2004 in his home in Albuquerque surrounded by his loved ones. He was greeted in heaven by his son, Carlos and his beloved grandson, Gerald. He leaves behind his adored wife, Isabel to whom he gasped his last words "I Love You;" his beloved children, Antonia Sandoval and husband, Lawrence, Ernest and Robert Martinez, Antoinette Grubbs and husband, Malcolm, Ann Gabaldon and husband, Steven, and Edwina Martinez; his grandchildren, Michelle and husband, Gino, Samantha, Brian, Stephanie, Renee, Ernest, Stephanie, Jennifer, Jeff and Brianna; his great grandchildren; sisters, Rosave Lucero, Modesta Tafoya, Nieves Juarez and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a Prisoner of War for 3 1/2 years during WWII. He survived the Bataan Death March; because of his sacrifices and sufferings and those of people like him, we enjoy the freedoms they fought to preserve "We will never forget." MERRILL -- Evelyn A. Merrill, 79, passed away on February 23, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. She was born in Buffalo, NY, to Harry and Amelia Kolb Merrill. She was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Over 25 years ago, she moved from Buffalo to Albuquerque where she worked in healthcare at Kirtland Air Force Base before retiring and was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Forestry Service, American Legion, WAVES National, Republican Women, Einstein Society, American Business Women's Association, and Order of the Eastern Star. In 2003 Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Merrill. She is survived by her son, Michael Wannenwetsch and a very special and adored granddaughter, Amelia Wannenwetsch, both of Albuquerque. Also surviving are a sister, Vivian Miller of Buffalo, NY; brother, Franklin Merrill and wife, Doty of Buffalo, NY; loving sister-in-law, Charlotte Merrill; and numerous nieces and nephews. OTERO -- Viola B. Otero, born Catalina Emilia Violanda Barela, age 79, of El Cerro, New Mexico, passed away on March 8, 2004 in a Phoenix hospital. With warmth, love, strength and determination, Viola handled the responsibility of raising a family while being married to a State Policeman fifty years ago. She turned that same strength and determination towards her husband's involvement in County government when he retired from the State Police. In recent years, she concentrated that warmth and love to caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of who will miss her greatly. Her house was always warm, her door was always open and there was always something hot on the stove. RITCHIE -- Margaret Jean, "Peggy" Ritchie, 76, died following a brief illness on March 8, 2004. Peggy was born in Raton, NM, on March 23, 1927. She attended UNM where she met Jim Ritchie. They were married for 54 years. Peggy is survived by her husband, Jim, and their four children: Charlie, his wife Pat and sons Luke, Jacob and Nathan; Chris, his wife Susan and sons Eric and Scott; Carol Ish, her husband Mark and children Travis, Casey and Catie; and Cathy Reardon, her husband Tim and daughters Kelly and Erin. Peggy followed her parents' footsteps into a career in education. Both parents moved to New Mexico to teach. Peggy's father, C. B. Sweeney, also coached three State championship boys' basketball teams at Raton High School. Peggy taught at Zia Elementary School in Albuquerque. She devoted countless hours to the PTA and other school programs. She was also dedicated to her alma mater, UNM. Peggy was the first female president of the UNM Alumni Association, helped initiate the Presidential Scholarship program and served on presidential search committees. She was a loyal Lobo fan. Peggy was also involved in several other organizations: the Chi Omega Sorority, PEO Chapter AA, Central United Methodist Church and the YMCA. Peggy's first love and utmost priority was her family. She loved her ten grandchildren with all her heart. We will all miss her dearly. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, 1:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 1516 Copper Ave NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. ROMERO -- Gilbertlee J. Romero was 21 years old, born on April 25, 1982, died suddenly on March 7, 2004. He was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. Gilbertlee is survived by his daughter, Angelique, and his godson, Martin A. Romero; his parents, Gilbert B. and Monica R. Romero; sister, Melissa M. Romero; Grandmothers, Clovia Segura and Maria S. Romero; aunts and uncles, Rita C. Torrez, Richard and Sylvia Fox, Vincent and Annabelle Valdez, John and Anna Romero all from Albuquerque, Isaac and Marcy Romero, Santa Fe, Patricio and Rosie Romero, Las Vegas and Eloy and Helen Romero, Espanola; several great-uncles and aunts; and cousins from New Mexico and Colorado. Gilbertlee was excited about going back to school after a long absence. He was currently attending Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute; he was studying to be a Respiratory Therapist. He was also a graduate of Albuquerque High School, class of 2001. He worked nights as an employee of Southern Wine and Spirits Distributors. ROSKIN -- Jules Jay Roskin, 95, businessman, art collector and interior designer died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 after a period of declining health due to age. A resident of Albuquerque since 1990, Mr. Roskin had a career as the owner of I. Gerson & Sons Metal Company in Toledo, Ohio and a jewelry manufacturing company in New York City, but his real passion was collecting modern art and designing residential spaces for select clients. In the early 1950s Mr. Roskin was an innovator in interior design incorporating the principles of solar heating in residential design long before sustainable design was seriously considered. The Roskin family house in Toledo, Ohio which he designed in collaboration with architect J. DeWitt Grow, was the recipient of many architectural awards including the 1951 American Architects Award as the "best residence" in the State of Ohio. Prior to moving to Albuquerque, Mr. Roskin lived for 15 years in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where he created the Culture Series, a popular lecture program at the Bellas Artes, as well as a hot breakfast program at the local library for indigent children. Previously he resided for 20 years in Westport, Connecticut and for 19 years in Toledo, Ohio, his wife's hometown. Mr. Roskin was born and raised in New York City. He was a graduate of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania and he did graduate work in psychology at Heidelberg University in Germany and at New York University. Mr. Roskin was married to Phyllis Kasle Roskin, his wife of 59 years. Mrs. Roskin, who died in 1995 in Albuquerque, was a distinguished musicologist, pianist and teacher. Mr. Roskin is survived by his sister, Miriam Roskin Berger of Fort Lee, New Jersey; three daughters, Roa Lynn of Arlington, Virginia, Nina Liebman of New York and Lyra Grant of Santa Fe; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

SAIS -- Marietta J. Sais, age 44, devoted wife, mother and sister was called home by our Heavenly Father after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. She was born July 21, 1959 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her father, Faustino B. Torres. Marietta is survived by her husband, Juan Carrion; sons, Stephen Sais and Andrew Carrion; her mother, Alice Olona Torres; sisters, Lucille Giddings and husband, Charles, Juli Velasco and husband, Bobby; brothers, Paul Torres and Danny Torres and wife, Jeanette; several nieces and nephews. Marietta retired after 25 years of dedicated service from the State of New Mexico, Children, Youth and Families Division. She loved her family and was always involved with her sons in various sports. Marietta enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo. She was a member of Queen of Heaven Parish. SCHAEFER -- Louise Schaefer, 85, of Albuquerque, and formerly of Santa Fe, died Saturday, February 28, 2004. A family prayer meeting was held and burial will be in Santa Fe in the near future. Louise Kenly Wilhide was born on January 18, 1919, in Frederick, MD, to George Raymond and Mary Moberly Wilhide. She grew up in Norfolk, VA. In 1938 she married James B. Deans and three daughters were born of that union. In 1948 she married Jack W. Schaefer. They resided on the east coast before moving to Santa Fe, NM in 1954. Louise was at one time a reporter for the Baltimore Sun and a regular contributor to Child Life Magazine. Her plays were published by Mayorga under the name of Lee Schaefer, and were produced in college theaters. Her play Ignacio! was produced here in Albuquerque in 1970. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Mamie and Ray Wilhide, a sister, Lillian, in childhood, both husbands, and three brothers-in-law, Walter Hopf, Weaver Kimball and Max Presnell. She is survived by three daughters: Claudia Pfeiffer and husband, Bill of Aberdeen, SD, Sharon Deans Truske and husband, Ted and Stephani Schaefer, all of Albuquerque; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Raymond and wife, Alice of Frederick, MD and Richard Wilhide of Ocala, FL; two sisters: Harriett Hopf of Rockville, MD and Carol Presnell of Twin Falls, ID. She is survived by her mother, Judith Lovvorn of Albuquerque; father, Charles Williams of California; sister, Amber Castaneda of California; brother, Charles Williams, serving in the US Armed Forces in Italy; grandmother, Dortha Glasnapp of Corrales, NM; beloved friend, Alfred "Alfie" E. Sterling of Albuquerque; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Erica was born in California on August 17, 1971. She graduated from Eldorado High School. Erica attended Citrus College in California and obtained her nursing degree. She returned to Albuquerque in November 2003 where she was currently employed with Southwest ENT. Services will be held Saturday, March 13, 2004, 2:00 p.m., at First Church of Religious Science, 3320 San Pedro Dr. NE, with Rev. Patrick Pollard officiating.
