OTERO -- Viola B. Otero, born Catalina Emilia Violanda Barela, age 79, of El Cerro, New Mexico, passed away on March 8, 2004 in a Phoenix hospital. With warmth, love, strength and determination, Viola handled the responsibility of raising a family while being married to a State Policeman fifty years ago. She turned that same strength and determination towards her husband's involvement in County government when he retired from the State Police. In recent years, she concentrated that warmth and love to caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of who will miss her greatly. Her house was always warm, her door was always open and there was always something hot on the stove. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Erinea Soto Barela; brothers David, Joaquin, Manuel, Camillo and Louie Barela; and by her beloved husband of forty nine years, Manuel Otero, Jr. Viola is survived by her children, Jerry Otero and his wife, Madalyn of Albuquerque, Georgia Otero-Kirkham and her husband, Rex of El Cerro, Pamela Otero of Albuquerque, Martha Otero and her husband, Tim Welch of Knoxville, TN, and Roberto Otero, and his wife, Gayla of Estancia; grandchildren, Jennifer Otero and her husband, Joseph of El Cerro, Janel Lowery and her husband, Bryan of El Cerro, Jason Otero and Nicolas Otero of Albuquerque, Jacqueline Yolanda, Christopher and Bobbi Louise Otero of Estancia, and Whitney Welch, of Knoxville, TN; great granddaughters, Jocelyn Otero, Justine Otero, Janessa Otero, of El Cerro and great grandson, Preston Rex Lowery, of El Cerro; brothers, Mike Barela of Los Angeles, CA, Saul Barela, and Jimmie Barela and his wife, Rosalia, and sister, Ramona Vinson all of Belen; brothers-in-law, Lorenzo Otero and his wife, Lillian of Rio Rancho and Bernie Vallejos and his wife, Socorro of Albuquerque; sisters-in-law, Marie Chewiwi of Isleta and Mela Otero of Los Lunas; and many loving nieces and nephews. All services will be at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tome, NM. A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 5:30pm followed by a rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 12, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Valencia Catholic Cemetery.
