Obituary for RITCHIE

Margaret Jean, "Peggy" Ritchie, 76, died following a brief illness on March 8, 2004. Peggy was born in Raton, NM, on March 23, 1927. She attended UNM where she met Jim Ritchie. They were married for 54 years. Peggy is survived by her husband, Jim, and their four children: Charlie, his wife Pat and sons Luke, Jacob and Nathan; Chris, his wife Susan and sons Eric and Scott; Carol Ish, her husband Mark and children Travis, Casey and Catie; and Cathy Reardon, her husband Tim and daughters Kelly and Erin. Peggy followed her parents' footsteps into a career in education. Both parents moved to New Mexico to teach. Peggy's father, C. B. Sweeney, also coached three State championship boys' basketball teams at Raton High School. Peggy taught at Zia Elementary School in Albuquerque. She devoted countless hours to the PTA and other school programs. She was also dedicated to her alma mater, UNM. Peggy was the first female president of the UNM Alumni Association, helped initiate the Presidential Scholarship program and served on presidential search committees. She was a loyal Lobo fan. Peggy was also involved in several other organizations: the Chi Omega Sorority, PEO Chapter AA, Central United Methodist Church and the YMCA. Peggy's first love and utmost priority was her family. She loved her ten grandchildren with all her heart. We will all miss her dearly. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, 1:00 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, 1516 Copper Ave NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. A reception celebrating Peggy's life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made in Peggy's name to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, UNM Foundation, Woodward Center, 700 Lomas NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131.
