ATKINS -- Mr. John Richard Morgan Atkins, 81, a resident of Rio Rancho, New Mexico passed away on January 12, 2004. Mr. Atkins is the beloved husband of 52 years to Mrs. Josephine Atkins. Mr. Atkins is also survived by four sons, Richard Atkins, Robert Atkins and wife, Diane and Andrew Atkins; four grandchildren, Cedar, Brandon, Nicole and Jennifer; one brother, Frank Brian Atkins; one sister, Jean Goldbloom and husband, Steve; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Atkins was a member of the traditional Catholic Church and was a Left Tenant in the Royal Air Force during World War I I, he fought in the Battle of Britian, was a POW in Germany and was a Squadron Commander. A visitation for Mr. Atkins will be Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. by Father Bibeau. A final visitation will be Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 333 58th NW with Mass of Resurrection to be Celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Bibeau. BACA -- Leroy A. Baca, age 61, died unexpectedly on Monday evening following a valiant fight with cancer, with his family by his side. Leroy was loved by many and all of those whose life he touched will never forget him. He was born on September 12, 1942 and was raised in Roy and the family ranch in Sabinoso, NM. Leroy was blessed by God with a large and loving family, charisma, many natural talents, and a smile and laugh that even now can be felt reverberating from heaven. He always said he was the most blessed the day he met his wife and soulmate, Gerri. Through the depth and the strength of their love they created three children whom he loved and cherished. He was more than a father and more than a friend, he was our source of strength and guidance. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sacramento and Annie Baca; father and mother-in-law, Warren and Betty Bachert; brothers-in-law, Lazaro Martinez, August Lindberger and Jimmy Gallegos; and sister-in-law, Ethel DeMerritt. Leroy is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Gerri; his devoted and loving children, Leroy Jr., Jeana and Annette; and his children in spirit, Nestor, Angela, and Angie. He is also survived by his siblings, Charlie Baca and wife, Margaret; Secundo Baca and wife, Annie; Eloisa Esquibel and husband, Alberto; Helen Baca; Irene Lindberger; Robert Baca and wife, Billie; Emma Gonzales and husband, Leo; Bertha Martinez; Mike Baca and wife, Rosemarie, Gilbert Baca and wife, Caroline; Sacramento (Junior) Baca and wife Bertha Rose, Esther Self and husband, Marvin; and John Baca and wife, Pam; in-laws, Betty Espinoza ; Judy Gallegos; Jimmy Bachert; and Marianne and Maribeth Bachert. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers will miss Leroy. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 16, at 10:00 a.m. also at Santa Maria de la Paz. BACA-LOPEZ -- Yolanda (Yolie) Baca-Lopez, born December 5, 1973 died January 10, 2004 . She is preceded in death by her mother, Rita Perez; grandfather, Jim Perez; and her uncle, Danny Perez. BORN -- Robert Born, 77, lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma on November 23, 2003. He was born in Woodland, MI. A Veteran, he proudly served his country during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Employed in the construction industry, he worked in many states and Egypt. Bob never met a stranger, and he always had a story or comment to offer everyone. He was a decent, honest, caring man who lived by his word. He always called himself just a poor old country boy. He loved his wife, family, golf and Detroit Red Wings hockey. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Barbara; one brother, Phil and wife, Joyce of Tucson, AZ; sisters, Carolyn Brechiesen and Frances Reuther of Michigan; cousin, Joan Hewitt of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria; and parents, Robert and Vesta Born. The family thanks, for their outstanding and gentle care, Dr. Douglas Clark, the entire staff of NM Oncology Hematology Consultants, and the staff of 5B at Presbyterian Hospital. BOSTICK -- Homer B. Bostick, 84, passed away on January 11, 2004. Homer was born in Mississippi to Major and Mary Bostick. Homer and Charlotte moved to Albuquerque in 1946 where he took a job with Zeon Electrical Products. He was a sign writer in Albuquerque for many years, the most memorable landmark being the Flamingo Dancer for the Terrace Drive-Inn. Homer was employed by Border Machinery and retired from Highway Supply as the General Manager. After Homer's retirement, Homer and Charlotte owned and operated CB's Contractors Services, Inc., which made them well-known in the highway construction community. Homer was a southern gentleman in every aspect of his life; in his business with people or just making Sunday supper for his family, which he loved to do. Homer and Charlotte enjoyed an active social life with their many longtime friends. Homer is preceded in death by his son W. "Sam" Bostick. Homer is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Charlotte; three children: Diane Jones, Sandra Abney, and Debra Hetes and husband, Ron; eight grandchildren: Brett and Brian Jones; Erin Abney; Ashley and Christopher Bostick; Jade, Michael and Nichole Hetes, and one great-grandson, Justyn Jones; also surviving him, his dear friend, Bessie, his dog. Homer was greatly loved by many and will be greatly missed by every one he touched. CABIEDES -- Eduardo Cabiedes Andrade, 90, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Cabiedes was born in Ibarra, Ecuador on September 1, 1913. He lived in Quito, Ecuador until August 1958 when he moved to St. Louis Missouri at the invitation on the then, St. Louis Country Day School to join its faculty as a Spanish teacher. In Ecuador he was an educator. He taught several years in various elementary and high schools. His specialty was Spanish and World Literature. In 1942 he joined the faculty of the newly founded American School, becoming the first Assistant Headmaster in 1947 where he was instrumental in developing the school to be the first co-ed school and the top educational institution in the country. In 1964 he moved to Albuquerque invited to join the faculty of the Albuquerque Academy where he was a Spanish teacher until his retirement in 1982. In Ecuador he was a member of two prestigious Ecuadorian national professional organizations: Cuadernos Pedagogicos and Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana. Aside from his years as an elementary and high school teacher, Mr. Cabiedes taught Philosophy and Literature at the Universidad Central de Quito. In 1962 he was invited by Michigan State University to be part of a special training for teachers of foreign languages. The year after he joined the Summer Faculty of the same institution where he trained teachers in Methods of Teaching Spanish. Mr. Cabiedes is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lydia de Cabiedes; daughters, Mercedes de Sebbio and husband Roberto from St. Louis, Missouri, Alicia Cabiedes Fink and husband Herb from Brockport, New York, and Eugenia Cabiedes from Albuquerque; grandchildren, Steve Cabiedes and wife Kathy, Gisella Sebbio-Thomas and husband William, Andrew and Alex Fink, and Carol Cabiedes; and great-grandchildren, Joseph and Caroline Cabiedes. In Ecuador he leaves 17 brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. ELLIOTT -- Mahlon Joseph Elliott, 73, left this life on January 3, 2004 with his beloved wife of 52 years, Lois, holding his hand. Mahlon is also survived by his four daughters, Johnell Washburn and husband, Bryant, Jennifer Hodgson and partner, Mark Oyenik, Marilee Kaminsky and husband, Dr. Edward Kaminsky, and Melanie Eckles and husband, Eric; two sisters, Artine Helinski and Barbara Gordon and husband, Robert; and grandchildren, Aaron and wife, Carol, Allison, Taylor, Wesley, Andrew, Ian, Megan and Hayden; and many nieces nephews and friends. After retiring from a long career as vice president of retail lumber sales at J.C. Baldridge Lumber Company, Mahlon worked part-time as a consultant for TNJ Construction Company. Mahlon loved his family, his work, sharing his knowledge and many skills with everyone who expressed an interest, his cabin that he and his family built on Grass Mountain and exploring every mountain and valley of the southwest that he loved so much. GILLESPIE -- Tedd P. Gillespie, a resident of New Mexico since his birth in Springer on November 19, 1929, died peacefully in his sleep Monday, January 12, 2004. Preceded in death by his wife, Laurita, he leaves his children Amy and Pete Gillespie and his grand sons Brian Gillespie and Rex Hoeltke. GLENN -- Latauqua Tashi Glenn, born January 4, 1982, and her son, Izaiah Jadan Sanchez, born July 11, 2002, passed away January 12, 2004. Tashi moved to Albuquerque in 1983 at the age of 1, attended La Mesa Elementary, Hayes Middle School and graduated from Los Lunas High School. While at Los Lunas High, she was a cheerleader. GRIFFITH -- Violet Lillian Reda Griffith, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, was called home by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 11, 2004. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, she passed on peacefully at the family home. Violet was born in Lindrith, NM on March 9, 1928, and moved with her family to northern California where she met her future husband, William Leonard Griffith. During their 56 years of marriage, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, home maker, friend to many, dedicated Sunday School teacher and active member of the East Gate Foursquare Gospel Church. HAGEWOOD -- Alice Hicks Hagewood, 81, of Louisville, KY, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004. She was a native of Dadeville, AL, and former resident of Belen, NM. She was a member of Middletown United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Baptist Hospital East. She was preceded in death by her brother, Sam Hicks. She is survived by her husband, Paul Hagewood; and daughter, Patti Hagewood. HAWKINS -- Marilyn Shirley Hawkins passed away suddenly at her home on January 9, 2004, where she lovingly cared for her disabled husband. She was 72 years old. She is survived by her husband, James L. Hawkins; daughter, Dianne S. Otto and husband, James; and grandchildren, Cheri L. and Christopher N. Otto, all of Albuquerque. Marilyn was born January 21, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and her husband, Jim moved to Albuquerque in August of 1986 to be near their family. HERRING -- Thelma M. Herring, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on January 12, 2004. She was born on February 14, 1916 in Lindsey, Oklahoma. Thelma moved to Los Alamos from Canadian, Texas in 1951 and spent nearly 50 years there before coming to Rio Rancho. She loved flowers and enjoyed gardening, where her gardens won her numerous ribbons in many competitions. She will be deeply missed. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Herring and brother Cecil Cooper. She is survived by her two sons, Don Morrow and wife, Delores of Rio Rancho, Charles D. Morrow and wife JoAnn of Glen Rose, TX; brother, Maynor Cooper and wife, Ruth of Cameron, TX; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. JACOBS -- Della In Loving Memory of Della I. "MoMo" Jacobs February 1, 1916 - January 9, 2004 Della was born in Bronson, Kansas and moved to New Mexico in the early 1940's. She was a valiant lady who raised her family alone and was a stalwart matriarch of a large family. She is survived by her children, C. Myron and Lydia Minich, Bernice and Lynn Snider, Don and Louise Minich and Johanna Colburn; sister, Flora Nell Whitmore; grandchildren, Hillary Armstrong, Russell Minich, David Minich, Darcy Painter, David Painter, Janni Snider, Mark Snider, Jill Snider, James Minich, Justin Minich, Sally Minich, Ivan Wells and Jerry Wells; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her husbands Cecil Minich, Ralph O'Kelly and C.L. JONES -- Alta Lavina Jones, 94, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on January 9, 2004. She is survived by her four sons, Charles Jones of Albuquerque, NM, James Jones of Medina, TX, Theodore Brackett of Albuquerque, NM and Donald Brackett of Taos, NM; step-daughter, Lavita Hill of Manchester, CT. Alta came to New Mexico in a covered wagon on June 16, 1915 from Lamar, Oklahoma. She homesteaded near Clayton, NM. Her father helped build the first school in Gladstone, NM. She was a longtime active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. KLINGENHAGEN -- Ann Klingenhagen, 81, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband Webb Klingenhagen of 49 years. Ann was born on September 5, 1922 in Belleville, Illinois. After high school she married her high school sweet heart, Webb. In 1980 they moved to Albuquerque where Ann worked in Escow and Webb co-founded Sunsoft. She is survived by her son, Tom Klingenhagen of Albuquerque; two daughters, Susie Klingenhagen of Albuquerque, and Sheree Klingenhagen of Redondo Beach, CA; and one brother, Harold Auer of Bellesville, IL. Tom, Susie, and Sheree wish to thank the staff of Laurel Heights, Sunrise Assisted Living, and Amber Care for allowing their mother dignity in death. LAUSER -- Kent E. Lauser, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, January 11, 2004. Kent grew up in Wilton Jct., Iowa. As a young man, he helped build the Clarksville Dam on the Mississippi River with the CCC. He joined the Army Air Corps during WWII and, while stationed at KAFB, met his wife, Marta. They raised their five children in Albuquerque's North Valley. Kent worked for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1973. He then built a unique, beautiful house in Ponderosa, NM, living there with Marta from 1981 until recently. Kent was a loving, generous family man whose life was characterized by hard work, faithfulness, goodness, honesty and unselfish, practical service to others. He loved to sing and had a wonderful sense of humor. A longtime member of Harwood Methodist Church, he faithfully sang in the choir for over thirty years. After moving to Ponderosa, Kent was active in community affairs, serving as president of the Ponderosa Community Water Board for over ten years. He enjoyed working and fishing outdoors, artistic painting, and was a resourceful handyman, inventing creative solutions to "fixer-upper" problems. Kent is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marta; sisters, Harriet Jensen and Miriam Sanson; children, Kenna del Sol, Linda Hunter and Don Lauser; grandchildren, Tony Jarvis, Markom and Ariel Jones, Ohnah Brown, Jedediah and Austin Holler; and great-grandchildren, Akira and Alexis. He was preceded in death by his children, Sue and Francis Dean Lauser. A Memorial Service and reception will be held Friday, January 16, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Jemez Valley Baptist Church, 8294 NM Hwy. 4, Canon, NM. Go north on Hwy.4, 8.1 mi. from the San Ysidro turnoff from Hwy. 550. QUINTANA -- Nemecio Euesbio Quintana, a resident of Bosque Farms, New Mexico passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2004. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta, New Mexico. He was an old time cowboy who was born in Trujillo, New Mexico just out side of Las Vegas, New Mexico. He worked for the Bell Ranch near Conchas Damn for 25 years. Nemecio married Antonia U. Romero Quintana of Las Vegas, New Mexico on August 27, 1955. After leaving the ranch, they then settled in Bosque Farms for the remainder of their lives. He also worked construction all up and down the Rio Grande Valley after moving to the area. He is preceded in death by is wife, Antonia "Toni" Quintana in 1989; his mother, Isabel Quintana in 1981; and his brother, Joe Quintana in 2003. Nemecio is survived by his two loving children, Consuelo "Connie" and her husband, Ruben Lee Garcia of Socorro, NM; and Edward "Eddie" Quintana of Los Lunas, NM; five grandchildren, Ruben Lee Jr.; Antoinette Lee; and Donna Lee Garcia; and Kristi and Antonio Quintana; his father Euesbio Quintana of Pueblo, CO; and one sister, Emma Romero of Pueblo, CO. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Romero Funeral Home from 5:30 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Peralta on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Valencia Catholic Cemetery. RYAN -- Dr. John Leonard Ryan, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, died on December 29, 2003 in Albuquerque. He was born in Troy, NY to John J. and Margaret Leonard Ryan on December 13, 1917. He was a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II and the Korean War, and retiring after 28 years of service. He was shot down on March 6, 1943 over Lorient, France, but escaped with the aid of the French Resistance. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Legion of Merit. After retirement from the military, John received a doctorate degree in Medieval Romance Languages and was a professor at the University of New Mexico. His wife, Janice Wargin Ryan preceded him in death in 1999. He is survived by his children, Laurie Scott, Lynne Gallagher, Mike Ryan and Terrie Ryan-Thomas; sister, Kathy Ivimey; and grandchildren, Clint, Jillian, Aaron, Katie, Maggie, Jade, and Crosby. SCHLIEBE -- Vivian Gertrude Schliebe, 90, died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Laurel View Home. She is survived by her husband, Martin of Rio Rancho; daughter, Trudy Mozee and husband, Elliott of Corrales; son, Frederick W. Johnson and wife, Shirley of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Benjamin, Gayle, Bradley, Janine, Jeffrey and Melanie; and 11 great-grandchildren. Born in Chicago to parents Albert and Gertrude Huseby on September 7, 1913, Vivian graduated from Morton Junior College and then attended Grinnell College. A resident of the local area for sixty years, she was active in a number of local and national organizations. She was noted for her gregarious nature and had a multitude of friends who will sorely miss her. Predeceasing Vivian were husbands, C.F. Brown and B.H. Johnson as well as son, Bruce J. WILSON -- Lee Jerome Wilson, 53, passed away in a local hospital on January 12, 2004, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Nina Wilson. He is survived by his family members Leonard and wife Billie, Mary, Gina and husband Fred, Louis and wife Margaret, Maureen and husband Steve, and Mark; extended family, most especially Nathan and Sarah, and his dear Aunt Dell. His family moved to Albuquerque from Salina, Kansas, when Lee was 10 years old. He later attended Highland High School and graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Fine Arts. His passion was the creation of many beautiful works of art, the fulfillment of his gift and calling in life. Lee' s free spirit blessed him throughout his life with the commitment to care for and befriend many small animals. Lee preserved in his artistic expression despite many adversities, even in the last days of his life. His friends and family will miss his compassion, keen wit and wry sense of humor.
