Obituary for RYAN

Dr. John Leonard Ryan, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, died on December 29, 2003 in Albuquerque. He was born in Troy, NY to John J. and Margaret Leonard Ryan on December 13, 1917. He was a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II and the Korean War, and retiring after 28 years of service. He was shot down on March 6, 1943 over Lorient, France, but escaped with the aid of the French Resistance. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Legion of Merit. After retirement from the military, John received a doctorate degree in Medieval Romance Languages and was a professor at the University of New Mexico. His wife, Janice Wargin Ryan preceded him in death in 1999. He is survived by his children, Laurie Scott, Lynne Gallagher, Mike Ryan and Terrie Ryan-Thomas; sister, Kathy Ivimey; and grandchildren, Clint, Jillian, Aaron, Katie, Maggie, Jade, and Crosby. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peters Holy Catholic Church Anglican Rite, 8100 Eubank NE with Fr. John Noel, Celebrant. Celebration of Life will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Malarky's, 25 Hotel Circle NE.
