Smith -- Elva Gertrude Smith, 87, died August 22, 2000 in Phoenix, AR. She is survived by her son, Bill Smith and wife, Darla of Albuquerque; three grandchildren, Todd Smith of Farmington, NM, LaShawnda Siemsen and husband, Casey of Fresno, CA, and Cody Smith of Albuquerque; three great-grandchildren, Aleice Smith and Chelsea Smith, both of Ft. Worth, TX, Brandon Smith of Fresno, CA; sister, Yvonne Munn of Prescott, AR; brothers, Ellis Smith of Prescott, AR, and Harold Smith of Texarkana, TX. She was a former longtime resident of Albuquerque, where she retired from Sears. After retiring, she moved to Ruidoso in 1972, where she lived until 1998 when she moved to Arizona. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star in Albuquerque and Chapter No. 65 in Ruidoso. Services will be held Monday, August 28, 2000, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Interment will take place at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Laneburg, AR, with arrangements by Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott, AR. Torrez -- Eloy M. Torrez, age 78, passed away August 23, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Amelia of 57 years; his children, Priscilla and husband, Dr. Larry Smith, David Torrez and wife, Kathy, Dr. Michael Torrez and wife, Rosanna, Mary Louise and husband, Jim Bermudez, Kathleen and husband, Dr. Steven Bloom, Yolanda and husband, James Lunsford; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Alice Garcia and husband, Gregorio; and one brother, Santiago Torrez and wife, Maria. Mr. Torrez was a World War II Veteran and retired from Albuquerque Public Schools in 1982. He will be remembered by his WWII stories, vegetable garden, prize-winning chili, wonderful sense of humor, and most of all, his loving generosity. He was a longtime member of Southside Church of God and was very active in the Armijo Senior Citizens Center. A Prayer service and viewing will be held tonight, 6:30 p.m., at Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Dr. SW, with Pastor Richard Mansfield officiating. Cremation will take place and interment of cremated remains will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Monday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. We thank all that have touched Eloy's heart and the continued support from all our friends and family. Ford -- Bonnie J. Ford, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2000. She was born in Ellsworth, WI, February 19, 1924, the daughter of the late Beth (Halliday) and Wilford Corman. She is survived by her nine children and their spouses, Mike & Sally Ford of Oahu, HI, Patty & Crawford (Ford) Smith of Sheboygan, WI, Mary & David Van Hyning of Torrance, CA, John (Jack) Ford of Boise, ID, Bonnie & Steve Johnston of Bosque Farms, NM, Beth & Larry McClintock of Doniphan, MO, Martha Garcia of Los Lunas, NM, Brenda & Gene Simpson of Los Lunas, NM, and Rebecca (Becky) & Michael Rose of Rio Rancho, NM. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bonnie retired from the Human Services Department of New Mexico, February 1987, as a social worker and was a Navy Veteran of WWII. Cremation took place August 22, 2000. Good Bye Bright Eyes. Chavez -- Samuel Chavez Sr., 91, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2000. Mr. Chavez was born in San Marcial, NM; he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, where he retired after 31 years. Mr. Chavez is survived by his wife of 68 years, Conception (Connie) Chavez; one son, Samuel Chavez Jr. and wife, Frances; four daughters, Selfita McCollum and husband, Jack of Las Vegas, NV, Albita Bruno of Gardena, CA, Sally Sanchez, and Lorraine Chavez, both of Albuquerque; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Final viewing will be this morning, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., in the mortuary chapel. Mass of Christian burial will also be celebrated this morning, 10:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Fr. James Moore as Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Ben Bruno, Tommy Bruno, Moses Santiago, Patrick Sanchez, Mickey Gabaldon, and Vince Smith. Funeral services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. SW, 243-5222.

Smith -- Virginia"Mina" Smith, age 79, born February 28, 1921, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died August 19, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fermin Smith; and a son, Jesus Smith. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Arlene Joyce McCann and husband, Jerry; her brother, Romulo Barboa and wife, Maria; her seven grandchildren, Jonathan McCann, Tanya McCann, Jerome McCann Jr., Valentino Lopez, Norbert Smith, Jason Smith, and Matthew Smith; her seven great-grandchildren; a very special niece, Jesse Chavez and husband, Anthony; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hensley -- Nella M. (Farmer) Hensley, 66, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, August 19, 2000. Nella was born to Bill and Mary Farmer on March 13, 1934, a lifelong resident of the Barton/Moriarty area. She was united in marriage to Robert Hensley on August 30, 1951. For many years Nella was active in the congregation of Crossroads Church of the Nazarene (formerly Moriarty Church of the Nazarene). She was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Ann Farmer; her father, W.A. (Bill) Farmer; and step-father, Al Brandt. Nella is survived by her mother, Mary Farmer Brandt; brother, Alvin Farmer and wife, Donna; and sister, Esther Helweg of Albuquerque; her husband, Robert O. Hensley of the home; daughters, Linda Anderson of Moriarty and husband, Ellan, Karen Hensley Ford of Estancia and husband, Jim; and a son, Bill Hensley and his fiancee, Lill Hermes and her son, Ryan Szabo of Moriarty; grandsons, James Peter Ford and his wife, Dixie and Jonathan Anderson; granddaughters, Julie Ford, Stephanie Anderson, Chrystal Anderson, Stephanie's fiance, Gordon Smith; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Family will greet friends Monday, August 21, 2000, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Moriarty. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at Heights First Church of the Nazarene, 8401 Paseo del Norte NE (corner of Paseo del Norte and Barstow), Albuquerque, with Rev. Roy Sloan and Rev. Bill Neilson officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Valley Cemetery, Barton Rd. Escorts of the casket will be Ellan Anderson, Jim Ford, Bill Hensley, James Peter Ford, L.T. O'bannon -- Dr. Charles Edward O'Bannon passed away on July 14, 2000 in Tempe, Arizona. He was born in Albuquerque on March 22, 1933. He is survived by wife, Nancy; children, Douglas D'Ann and Carey and their spouses; his sister, Lois-Faye Lampson of Albuquerque; uncle, Dan E. O'Bannon; aunts, Marjorie B. Smith and B.J. Brocklehurst. Charles retired from AZ State University in 1997 after 33 years as a Professor of Engineering, including seven years serving as Chair of the Civil Engineering Department. He graduated from Albuquerque High School, received his B.S. from UNM, earned his M.S. from Harvard University, and was granted a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. He served on the AZ State Board of Technical Registration and was elected two terms as Chair. Listed in the"Who's Who in the West", he was on the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped during the 1970s. Charlie's energy, intellect, humor, and his quest for living in spite of physical challenges were an inspiration to his family, friends, students and all the"strangers he never met." Charles was predeceased by his parents, Della Mattson O'Bannon and Charles Patrick O'Bannon, Albuquerque District Engineer, New Mexico State Highway Department, who was the son of Daniel O'Bannon, longtime Bernalillo County Assessor. Services took place in Arizona and burial in Albuquerque. Memorials may be sent to the O'Bannon Scholarship Fund, ASU Foundation, c/o Stephanie Grinage, Engineering College, PO Box 875506, Tempe, AZ 85287.
