Milan -- Today, we celebrate the life of Veneranda Mirabal Milan, a.k.a. Bennie, Grandma Bennie, and Aunt Bennie. Bennie was born in San Rafael, New Mexico on January 10, 1910 to Silvestre Mirabal from Seboyeta, NM and Lorenzita Jaramillo from Moquino, NM. She was married to Salvador Milan in 1931 and is survived by her three children, Peter S. Milan, Paul L. Milan and his wife, Tensia and Kathleen M. Hocker and her husband, William V. Hocker, all of the Grants-Milan area. Bennie graduated from the San Rafael Grade School, attended St. Vincente Academy in Albuquerque, and the Sisters of Loretta Academy in Santa Fe. She graduated from Grants High School in 1931. She was the last existing survivor of her brothers, Federico, Silvestre, Monico and Alfredo Mirabal; and sisters, Veneranda Mirabal #1, Mrs. Manuel Candelaria (Prudencia), Mrs. Rosalio Candelaria (Josefa), and Mrs. Santos Candelaria (Bitalina). Bennie will always be remembered for her passion for cooking and her passion for her grandchildren. She enjoyed life and would host a feast for one person or a hundred people. She enjoyed collecting cook books and trying new recipes, changing the recipes to make them better. Bennie was the person who always played the supportive role for her loved ones. Being that her mother died while Bennie was a teenager, she helped her father, Silvestre Mirabal, host the multitude of business and political guests that were constantly coming to San Rafael to see her father. Bennie married the late Salvador Milan, June 20, 1931, and moved to Gallup, where she helped Salvador run People's Market. In 1941, Salvador and Bennie moved to what was to become the Milan Ranch and is now the Village of Milan, where they engaged in sheep ranching and in 1945, converted the ranch to carrot farming. Since telephones were non-existent at the Milan Ranch, Bennie was always prepared to feed a group of cowboys, sheep-herders, carrot growers, or the multitude of family members that would show up, and she was the first to volunteer to host the many family reunions that we all looked forward to attending. In 1949, Bennie managed the Milan Motel and Coffee Shop and in 1951, she moved to her present home, which was the second house built in the area destined to be the Village of Milan. Bennie hosted many political and social fund raisers in her home during the many years that Salvador was the Mayor of the Village of Milan (1957-1979). Bennie will always be remembered for her quick wit and her tendency to tell you exactly what she thought, regardless of the consequences. Although most of her acquaintances knew her as a social person, Bennie was always ready to help Salvador at the store, at the ranch, or at the motel, even if it called for riding a horse, driving a truck, or cleaning rooms at the motel, packing a pantry of meat and vegetables for the winter, building an oasis of a flower and vegetable garden, and taking care of her grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, 6:00 p.m., at Grants Mortuary Chapel. The Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at St. Vivian's Catholic Church with Fr. Gil Mangampo officiating. Burial will follow at Grants Memorial Park. Pallbearers are her grandsons, William A. Hocker, Pablo A. Milan, Robert Hocker, Stephen Hocker, John Hocker, Henry Milan, and her great-grandsons, Patrick Simmons, Trevor Hocker and Paul DeBlassie IV. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters, Kathleen DeBlassie, Tensia Simmons, Norma Lopez, and her great-granddaughters, Andrea and Michelle Milan, Kathleen Maria and Victoria DeBlassie. In lieu of flowers, please donate, in her memory, to St. Vivian's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 2938, Milan, NM 87021. Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
