Frances graduated from Whitney High School at age 16 and went to Hill Country Junior College in Hillsboro, TX, where she received an Associate Degree. Soon after that, she met a newly graduated Texas A & M young man who had come to Whitney as the new Agriculture teacher, Don Crawford. Don was drafted, entered the Army, qualified for Officer Training School and eventually became a pilot in the Army Air Corps. Frances was very involved in the community, serving as president of the Albuquerque Woman's Club, and maintaining an active membership in the Life Underwriters Association. She also served one year as President of the Alumni Association of Whitney High School. Her church involvement was most important in her life. The family were members of the University Church of Christ, and later Frances attended Montgomery Church of Christ, where she was a faithful greeter for years. Frances and Don were instrumental in the establishment of the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home. Don was Chairman of the Board at the time of his death and Frances served on the Board of Directors until 2004. JARAMILLO, LINDA GAUME Linda Lou Gaume Jaramillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away surrounded by her loving family on December 18, 2012. She was 61. Linda was a generous person who was always looking for a way to help others, whether through her work as an educator and researcher at the New Mexico Municipal League or her daily interactions with loved ones and strangers. Her extraordinary sense of empathy and compassion frequently led her to boldly act to try to improve the lives of other people and the world around her. She was keenly aware of injustice and deeply committed to fighting it. She was born April 14, 1951, in El Paso, Texas (a fact which, as a proud New Mexican, she admitted reluctantly) to Dorothy (Neatherlin) and Amos Gaume. The family lived in Anthony, New Mexico, before moving to Berkeley, California, for her father to attend seminary school when she was two years old. Amos' work as an Episcopal minister took the family, including brother Norman and sister Carolyn, to Deming and Hobbs. Linda graduated from Hobbs High School in 1969. She later lived in Las Cruces, San Patricio, Socorro, Albuquerque, and Corrales. In addition to her work as a mother of three, she was employed as the City Clerk and Administrator in the Village of Corrales, Business Administrator at Camp Stoney near Santa Fe, and for the last twelve years of her life at the New Mexico Municipal League in Santa Fe. There she developed and directed a program for training elected municipal officials; it included courses in ethics, leadership, and law. She named this program Municipal Officials Leadership Institute (MOLI) and into it she poured her passion for, and knowledge of, New Mexico culture, history, and government. She hoped that better preparing elected officials for their jobs would not only benefit them, but also improve local government, increase the level of discourse in state politics, and help protect the civil liberties of all New Mexicans. Family was extremely important to Linda, who kept close ties to extended family throughout her life. This passion piqued her interest in genealogy, which she pursued with characteristic determination and energy through research in local, national, and international archives. She uncovered a great deal of information, which she worked for years to piece together to better understand and share the story of her family, including the Gaume branch, which she traced back five centuries to Montecheroux, France. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved dog, Kelly. She is survived by husband Jose Jaramillo and his daughter Kalynn; brother Norman and wife Heather; sister Carolyn Stevens and husband Mark; three children, Zach Ives and wife Laura, Clara Jeffers and husband Mario, and Kyle Jeffers and wife Andrea; three grandchildren, Harrison and Harper Ives and Olivia Jeffers; and very dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandnieces. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Albuquerque on January 12 at 10:00am. A reception to be held afterwards at 4214 2nd St NW. In lieu of flowers, Linda's family requests donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls.org) or the Barrett Foundation (barrettfoundation.org)

MORAN, BETTIE J. noted Southwestern artist, passed away on January 2, 2013. She was born Elizabeth June Sumner on March 30, 1925 in Wellington, Texas. Her parents were T.D. "Mickey" Sumner, a hard-working commercial building contractor, and Mildred Louise Russell, a homemaker and artist. Bettie credited her parents with providing her the building blocks for her becoming a successful professional artist - the fierce drive and dedication from her father and the creative spirit from her mother. Bettie grew up at various job sites in Texas and New Mexico until the family settled in Roswell in 1939. Essentially an artist since she was old enough to hold a brush, Bettie declared her lifelong career goal at age nine. She sold her first painting at eighteen and began exhibiting her work to the public in 1946. Bettie expressed her considerable artistic talent with a wide range of media, including oils, watercolors, pastels, pencil, pen and ink, acrylics, mosaics, and bronze sculptures. Her subjects were traditional, non-objective, and abstract. A lifelong learner, Bettie added the study of antiques to her artistic repertoire, moving to Albuquerque to open Moran's Antiques and Art Gallery in 1968. Although Bettie's work is best known in the Southwest, her paintings and sculptures are in private collections all over the country. In 2004, Bettie published her autobiography The Colors and Textures of an Artist's Life, a collection of her experiences as she lived and grew as an artist and photos of many of her works. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eddie Moran; and her brother Buddy Sumner. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Corn; four nieces; and a nephew. SMITH, GRACE "DOTTIE/DOTS" died peacefully at home on December 27, 2012, insisting she would not spoil Christmas Day for everyone. Small, feisty and ever determined, she was loved not only by her family but also by a multitude of friends, old and new. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Willard; and brother Fred. Dottie is survived by her children, Karen Panciera of Albuquerque, NM, Loretta Fritz and husband Wayne of British Columbia, Canada, and Raymond Smith and wife Maddalena of Mesa, AZ; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born in Detroit, MI, March 8, 1917, Dottie acquired her nickname when only a few months old, and her adult weight of 80 - 85 pounds assured she never outgrew it. She married Willard in 1939 and they continued living in Michigan until 1970, when the family, including her father, moved to Albuquerque. She and Willard also lived in Los Lunas for 15 years. Dottie worked tirelessly to battle dirt, grime and disorder in her home and she refused to eat chicken cooked in any restaurant. She was fiercely proud of her home, her faith, her years at Hickory Farms - and even her children. A reader and occasional card player. Dottie's other hobbies included walking, bargain finding, doting on the men folk in her life, and providing unsolicited fashion advice to her children and grandchildren, the latter apparently always in need of a haircut. She was truly a good person, a good wife, parent, and a good friend. A Service of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel. STEPHENSON, GERALDINE GAIL (DENNA) At the young age of 58 our beloved Denna has passed from this world into the arms of our Lord and Savior. Our loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and true friend no longer suffers pain, but enjoys everlasting peace and tranquility in Heaven. Denna was born November 2, 1954 in Griffin, Georgia. She was the third of four daughters born to Jerry and Ruth Hastings. Denna's final breath on Earth was drawn Thursday, January 3, 2013 as she rested peacefully in her home, cared for by her family and friends. Denna and her family moved to Albuquerque when she was four years old, and she resided in New Mexico the rest of her life, first in Albuquerque, then in Farmington for three years, and then back in Albuquerque for the last 31 years. Denna was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Hastings. She is survived by her husband of 36 years Burt Stephenson; her daughter Mistie Micklevitz and husband Davy; step-son Brian Stephenson and wife Lisa; five grandchildren Shay, Vance, Robert, Lesley, and Sara. Additional survivors include her father Jerry Hastings; her sisters Robbin Hulette and husband Steve, Georgia Bose and husband Tom, and Jackie Latini; numerous nieces, nephews, their spouses, and their children. Always the first to volunteer when help was needed, Denna was a tireless worker, generous to a fault, a staunch defender of family and friends, and all-around good person. She loved the outdoors, especially family camping trips where she earned the well-deserved nickname, "Cookie." She adored her grandchildren, and to the last moment of her last day just the sight of them brought a radiant smile to her face. Denna was self-employed for a time with her own companies, Deenie Weenie Ice Cream Truck and Burt's Pets. The greater part of her career life was in the wholesale floor covering industry selling ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, and carpet in New Mexico and Colorado. Her employers included New Mexico Supply Company, Thunderbird Steel, Classic Design, LD Brinkman Company, Congoleum Corporation, and Beaulieu of America. She was well-know for the excellent service she provided to her retail customers throughout her sales territories, most of whom she counted among her numerous friends. Denna's family wants to extend special thanks to those who fought for her life and eased her ultimate passage - New Mexico Cancer Center, Dr. Amit Shah, Dr. Natalie Marshall, Dr. Clark Haskins, Amy Harris; Comfort Keepers, Kaye Tipton, Debbie Elias; Hospice Compassus, Julia Lujan, and many others who provided help and comfort. To celebrate this extraordinary woman and to thank God for giving all of us the wonderful gift of her life, a memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel East, 12820 Indian School Road NE in Albuquerque on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM.
