Obituary for SMITH

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 06, 2013

SMITH, GRACE "DOTTIE/DOTS" died peacefully at home on December 27, 2012, insisting she would not spoil Christmas Day for everyone. Small, feisty and ever determined, she was loved not only by her family but also by a multitude of friends, old and new. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Willard; and brother Fred. Dottie is survived by her children, Karen Panciera of Albuquerque, NM, Loretta Fritz and husband Wayne of British Columbia, Canada, and Raymond Smith and wife Maddalena of Mesa, AZ; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born in Detroit, MI, March 8, 1917, Dottie acquired her nickname when only a few months old, and her adult weight of 80 - 85 pounds assured she never outgrew it. She married Willard in 1939 and they continued living in Michigan until 1970, when the family, including her father, moved to Albuquerque. She and Willard also lived in Los Lunas for 15 years. Dottie worked tirelessly to battle dirt, grime and disorder in her home and she refused to eat chicken cooked in any restaurant. She was fiercely proud of her home, her faith, her years at Hickory Farms - and even her children. A reader and occasional card player. Dottie's other hobbies included walking, bargain finding, doting on the men folk in her life, and providing unsolicited fashion advice to her children and grandchildren, the latter apparently always in need of a haircut. She was truly a good person, a good wife, parent, and a good friend. A Service of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to Presbyterian Hospice.
