CORMIER -- ROBERT E. LIEUTENANT COLONEL U.S. ARMY (RET.) Bob, age 86, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2012 in the presence of his children, after receiving the Last Rites of the Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette; their seven children; their eight grandchildren; and their great-grandson; almost all of whom live in Albuquerque. Bob was born in Waltham, Massachusetts May 23, 1926. After graduating from Waltham High School, Bob served during WWII in the European Theater as an infantryman with the U.S. Army. After he was discharged, he worked several jobs before entering the Boston University Army R.O.T.C program. In his senior year, he was appointed cadet colonel of the university's R.O.T.C Corps. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Business Administration and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry in the U.S. Army. Shortly thereafter, he met Bernadette (Bernie) and they were married June 11, 1955 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During the next 18 years, they traveled from post to post while growing their family. Bob served two tours in Vietnam. On May 31, 1974 Bob retired from the service and moved his family to Albuquerque, where he had resided ever since. Bob always found time to volunteer his services to needy causes. During his army career, most of his volunteer work revolved around boy/girl scouts and church activities. After moving to Albuquerque, he continued working with the scouts and expanded his efforts to include youth track clubs. For many years Bob and Bernie were active participants in the Catholic community's Marriage/Engaged Enrichment Program. Bob ushered at the 12 o'clock Mass at Annunciation Parish for over 20 years and also sang in the choir. He was a volunteer clerk at Anna Kaseman Hospital and often spent time playing cards with nursing home residents. Bob's booming voice stood him well when he played Santa Claus during the Christmas season. When Bob was asked what he considered to be three of his life's major achievements, he answered: Being smart enough to ask Bernie to marry him (and being lucky enough for her to say yes); the fact that all seven of his children graduated from college with minimum help from him; and that God had provided him with the talent and ability that allowed him to retire from the army as a Lt. Colonel of Infantry. Rosary will be recited for Bob on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 7:00 pm at French-Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 8:30 am at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont St. NE. Burial will follow with military honors at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. After graduating 1949, Jack served in the 6th Armored Cavalry in Europe. He resigned his commission to go into business while continuing to serve in the United States Army Reserve and retired as a colonel in 1985. Jack's love affair with New Mexico began in 1960 with an offer from Caterpillar Tractor to take over the dealership from R. L. Harrison. He expanded the territory to include all of New Mexico and West Texas. For over 42 years, Jack successfully led Rust Tractor Company with passion, integrity and love of his customers and business partners, including over 400 employees. His quietly applied leadership skills, his ever-considerate demeanor and his thoughtful direction in remarkably diverse responsibilities were appreciated by all ranks, sectors, and personages. The generous spirit of "Happy Jack," as he is affectionately known to his family has been exemplified by his many charitable contributions. In 1965, he led the first one million dollar campaign for the United Way. Jack and Donna have been leading philanthropists in this community, making a variety of carefully considered gifts to such key New Mexico institutions as Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque Community Foundation, UNM, CNM and NDI-NM. A central theme of many of these gifts has been to enhance the education, health and ethical climate of our state. At the dedication of the Presbyterian Rust Medical Center it was noted that, "Everywhere they go, Jack and Donna Rust improve the lives of others." In the spirit of giving back to the community that has been so good to him and his family, Jack Rust was a man of action. Always a team player, he not only jumped in but enlisted other friends and community leaders to join forces to create opportunities for the betterment of others. He set the bar for many men and many companies. He was an All-American in mind, heart and spirit. His unwavering ethics, leadership and courage were appreciated by the many boards that he founded and served on throughout the years. Rest in peace Jack Rust, you were a dedicated family man, a world-class fly fisherman, a strong soldier, an old school business man, a baby whisperer, a lover of chocolate chip cookies, a collector of abandoned golf balls, a champion gin rummy player, and a man of great integrity. You left the world a better place than you found it and will be missed by a great many people. In sum and in short, Jack Rust's life was a remarkable manifestation of his beloved West Point's maxim: "Duty, Honor, Country." Memorial Service to be held at Calvary Church, 4001 Osuna Rd. WOLLMAN -- NATHANIEL Who lived in Albuquerque from 1948 until 2008, passed away peacefully in Lewiston, Maine, on June 10, 2012. He was born May 15, 1915 in Philadelphia, where he grew up. On graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. After one year at Penn, a close friend and a golf course lured him to Pennsylvania State University, from which he received the B.A. in Economics. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 1940. In 1939, Nathaniel married Lenora Levin, also of Philadelphia. That year he also became a member of the faculty of Colorado College. During World War II Nathaniel served first as a senior business economist in the Office of Price Administration and then in 1943 enlisted in the Navy. While on active duty, Nathaniel developed a deep attachment to and admiration for the Navy. At the end of the war, rather than leaving the Navy altogether, he stayed on as an officer in the Naval Reserve, from which he retired in 1968 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1948, the Wollmans, now with two young sons, moved to Albuquerque, where Nathaniel joined the faculty of the Department of Economics of the University of New Mexico. He served as chair of the Department from 1960 to 1969. In 1969 he was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, a position he held until his retirement from the University in 1980. Following his retirement from the University, he cared lovingly for his wife Lenora, who had Alzheimer's disease, until her death in 1994. In 2008, when he was no longer able to live independently, he moved to Maine to live with his younger son and daughter-in-law. Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, Nathaniel conducted research in the economics of natural resources and the emerging field of environmental economics. His specialty was water resources. In 1960 he authored the report Water Supply and Demand, a section of a comprehensive analysis of water resources activities prepared under the direction of the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources. During the 1970s he was a member of both the Environmental Studies Board and the Board on Mineral and Energy Resources of the National Research Council, the research arm of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1973 he directed the preparation of the report Man, Materials, and Environment. This report, requested by and prepared for the National Commission on Materials Policy, assessed the mutual influences of national materials policy and national environmental policy. Nathaniel's publications during these years also include three books: one on New Mexico water resources, one on U.S. national water resources, and one on the water resources of Chile. Having discovered the magic of New Mexico in 1948, Nathaniel never wanted to live elsewhere. During the 1950s, he, his wife Lenora, and their two sons spent one month every summer in a small cabin on a pristine trout stream above 9,000 feet in the mountains of north central New Mexico. He loved fly fishing, and it became a family activity. Well into his seventies he could still be found heading into remote regions of northern New Mexico in search of trout. Nathaniel also loved golf, and it too became a family activity. Into his nineties he was a fixture on his favorite Albuquerque golf course. Nathaniel is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Patricia Wollman of Staten Island, NY, and their son Joseph Wollman of Ann Arbor, MI; his son and daughter-in-law Eric Wollman and Patricia Buls of Lewiston, Maine, and their daughters Rose Wollman of Bloomington, Indiana, and Lila Wollman of St. Petersburg, Florida; and his brother Milton Wollman of Philadelphia. Nathaniel's sister Grace Wollman Kunstler died in 1987. Nathaniel was a loving and caring person, dedicated to his family, to his profession, and to his responsibilities as a citizen. He will be buried beside his wife Lenora in Santa Fe National Cemetery. Services will be held in the cemetery at 11:15 AM on Monday, July 23, 2012, with Rabbi Paul Citrin officiating.
